I grew up listening to this group & they are one of my favorites from the 60's - 80's. They have had so many hit songs. Love their mix of rock with classical music. They have a sound like no other band. The Moody Blues' most successful singles include "Go Now", "Nights in White Satin", "Tuesday Afternoon", "Question", "Gemini Dream", "The Voice" & "Your Wildest Dreams". But all of their music is great.

MB's music stands the test of time. Their music never grows old. They recorded Days of Future Passed the same time as the Beatle's Sgt. Pepper's . The big difference is that the MB continued to tour in concert for the next 50 yrs.

The Moody Blues left the Blues behind after they added Justin Hayward and John Lodge, following the exit of Denny Laine and Clint Warwick. At that time they decided to write and perform who they were. They then went into the recording studio and did Days of Future Passed. Also, Mike Pinder added the mellotron and the Real Moody Blues were born. The core 7 albums from Days to 7th Sojourn are the absolute best. They are my favorite band due to their melodies, harmonies, the layering of the instruments and yes the vocals. They had four of the best vocalists on the core 7. I also love their lyrics as they seam to be streams of consciousness and combine the lyrics with the music it hits the heart.

The Moodys have been a part of my life from the late ‘60s on. Though I’ve seen them many times over the years, 1981 turned into the year of the Moodys. Saw them at the Mushroom (Royal Albert Hall), Poplar Creek in Hoffman Estates, and either the Chicago Stadium or the Rosemont, can’t remember which. While there will be solo work especially from Justin Haywood, sadly, there will be no more Moody Blues as only two of them remain, but what a great run they had.

Once the Moodies, left the blues, they decided to do their own music. Mike Pinder brought in the mellotron that opened them to a orchestral, sometimes cosmic and spiritual place in their music. They were the original cosmic rockers. Wonderful and unique music that is true to the composer of each song. Everyone in the band wrote music, Graeme wrote poetry, Mike, Ray and John contributed some very classic and memorable songs and Justin Hayward is a prolific writer. I believe Justin's more of a introvert and writes his thoughts and feelings more than the others. so he always had a lot to offer as far as their songs. But in their classic form, it was a whole group effort.

I grew up with the Moodies and had a MASSIVE crush on Justin 🥰 I have seen them a few times in my hometown Liverpool UK at the Empire Theatre and we scousers always get the best concerts out of them..usually half an hour longer 😳 this is down to 2 factors, 1 if you've ever heard the Liverpool fans sing "you'll never walk alone" Well we sing the bands back on to the stage when they finish and 2 Justin is very happily married to a scouse girl and has been since 1970 and ALL his inlaws are usually at the concert...😏 the Las time I saw them Justin and John ended up sitting on the edge of the stage, guitars in hand and played You'll never Walk Alone and we where their very loud backing vocalists 🤣🤣🤣 I have big love for the Moodies Harri, Justin and John stepped out of the band briefly and set themselves up with a different name, the Blue Jay's which makes use of classical orchestration.. search "the Blue Jay's track Maybe....absolutely amazing track.🙏👍🥰

The Moody Blues started out as British band trying to do American rhythm and blues, but morphed into orchestral, progressive, space rock. They made timeless and beautiful music. The meaning of the song is that he recognizes that he is just an actor, but his union in love transcends the façade and achieves something greater. It sounds like a whole orchestra, but it is just the five Moody Blues playing all the instruments, Ray Thomas on flue, Mike Pinder on Mellotron (tapes of string instruments).

One of my favorite Moody Blues' songs---probably played 500 times---mostly in the 1970's. To me it is about the mystical deep unfilled yearning of love and merger with the beloved. This was the second album of the groups' "Core Seven" albums from years 1967 to 72'. The album to me gives the clue to the song: "In Search of the Lost Chord"--that of the group looking for understanding outside the normality box to lifespan's pains, mysteries and psychedelic experiences---After al: "Timothy Leary's Dead----no, no , no He's Outside Looking In!!!" (also in the album) Check out the other songs on this album----truly, truly revolutionary even for today---2022!!

Moody Blues have 4 distinctly different songwriters. Five if you count drummer Graeme Edge who provided spoken word poetry on the early albums. Guitarist Justin Hayward who wrote and sings this one was the romantic, folky, spiritual one who wrote the haunting, lonely ones. Mike Pinder, keyboardist, was the dark mystical one who wrote a lot of songs dealing with man's relationship with the universe. Ray Thomas, the flute and harmonica player wrote the more lighthearted, minstrel-like ones. And bassist John Lodge was the most rock and roll of the band, although he could also write beautiful ballads as well. You should out a couple songs from each band member. Here's a start: Justin - "Watching and Waiting", "The Land of Make Believe" "You Can Never Go Home" Mike - "Meloncholy Man", "Have You Heard", "Out and In" Ray - "Legend of a Mind", "Floating", "Our Guessing Game" John - "Isn't Life Strange", "Emily's Song", "Candle of Life" God Bless...✌🙏

You're right about the sound, it is more English folk-based. There is a story behind how the band evolved their sound. When they first started in 1964, they were effectively an R & B band. Their biggest hit at the time was a cover of "Go Now." The lead guitarist/singer was Denny Laine (who would later join Wings). However, the band struggled trying to emulate the success of "Go Now." Eventually, Denny Laine decided to leave the band to pursue other musical interests. The bassist, Clint Warwick, also left at around the same time to focus on his family. The rest of the band wanted to carry on, and brought in John Lodge to play bass. After a search, they connected with Justin Hayward to take on lead guitar. They continued doing R & B but soon discovered that it was no longer working for them, and contemplated changing their name and sound. They received an invitation to play in Belgium with the condition that they keep the band name. During their tenure in Belgium, they developed their song writing to reflect a more "English" sound and created a stage show that would contain elements of Days of Future Passed.

Justin Hayward, who wrote this song,came from a folk background. The opening depicts a person whose world is a stage,like the rest of us. Each day we wake up,make up(put on the face we wish to show the world) and walk out in front of an audience..the world. He wishes to express his true feelings but cannot. You pegged it in your analysis. In a more recent version, he talks about this song but does not elaborate because it's too personal. It does seem to be about unrequited love or a breakup,or maybe a song of reconciliation. The original Moody blues with Denny Laine as the lead singer, was more bluesy. When Justin Hayward replaced him as lead singer,the band decided to go with his style. They also decided to keep the name. Another song you might find interesting is called "Question" by The Moody Blues. It "reads" also like 2 different acts that interplay. The other guitarist,John Lodge, wrote some kickass tunes with the band, for one "I'm just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band" Popular as they were, the Moodies we're not the standard for "cool" and def underrated in terms of talent. This is a good song to explain what the Moodies are all about; their true style. This was early Moody Blues. They are so good, they speak to the heart. They're not bluesy at all; I think their name Moody Blues is more an interpretation of their mood, their emotions. The Moodies did some rock music in the 80's: "Gemini Dream", "Veteran Cosmic Rocker" (Ray singing that one) etc., but I think their agents pressured them to go in that direction at that time. But this song is a typical True Moody Blues type song "Nights in White Satin" is another true example of their style.. But I love whatever they do. Check out: "Had to Fall in Love" and "Om".

The Moody Blues are a great early prog rock band. Like most prog bands you lose something by lifting one track out of a concept album. It is like reading a random chapter of a book. The Actor is a great song. And The Moody Blues at times do sound a bit folk like but remember that era had limited instruments and styles. These guys were at the cutting edge at that time. John Lodge (flute and writer) does some singing early on but the main singer for the band is Justin Hayward. This is Justin, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful male voices ever. There is a strong influence of English Folk music in their sound. There is also a strong influence of English Folk music in early Genesis, yet the two bands are nothing alike. Folk music expanded greatly in all directions under the influence of Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Woody's son Arlo, Bob Dylan, The Weavers, Holly Near, Peter, Paul, and Mary, and many others. The Mamas and The Papas, Simon and Garfunkel. Essentially, the English helped themselves to all genres of American Music, and gave it back to us, saying, here, listen to this.

Oh The Moodies.....where you wanted to go when the radio rock got boring. Brings me back in time. Thank you :).....they were never a bluesy rock band ...it was their name that fooled everyone.

Actually, their very first album (when Denny Lane was with them) was, indeed, blues based. After Denny left and Justin Hayward and John Lodge came aboard, they totally changed their entire approach, which was more fitting for the sensibilities of the "new" lineup. They kept the name, even if it no longer fit their style. Funny though, the name still suited their sound, for some reason! BTW, John Lodge had been with them before the Denny Lane "Go Now" period, but he left the band to further his education. He came back to the fold just in time for their big change.

You said it yourself, their music is haunting. Don't let the name of the band fool you. They were The Moody Blues before Justin Hayward joined the band and the music changed direction. Just look at the first 7 albums title and album cover artwork. Not to mention the music after Justin Hayward joined the band.

Of all of the non-hit album tracks, "For My Lady" is probably the most popular of all. Beautiful song written by Ray Thomas. Another great one is "New Horizons".
