I love this type of videos! They really help me out Oct. 27 you posted a video about addiction, saying that to crave is to suffer; how you used to be addicted to whiskey, then nicotine. That really resonated with me. I threw out my vape that day. I had been smoking for a lil over a year and was looking for any excuse not to throw it out. "All my friends do it." "It's not that bad." You gave me a sense of clarity with your video and inspired me to get into philosophy. You are right though, once you get rid of the source of addiction, the addiction is still there. It moved onto my phone. I've been addicted to social media and dating apps. I will delete them from my phone then in a couple days, redownload them. I don't like that pattern and I want it to stop. I deleted them again and hope to never redownload them. I think I need to be alone with my thoughts for a while. Thanks for the videos :)

just an advice u just cant get rid of ur addiction and sit with it u will eventually move to something else , instead replace ur addiction with something positive u enjoy, so stop doing the thing ur addcited to for a while gain some clarity, then look for activities or hobbies which u think will bring a net positive to ur life and do them, being happy , having good relationships and some sort of goal will eliminate alot of addiction from ur life in general

Pewds is recommending Hellenistic philosophers at the right time, especially those who were responding to the decline of the polis. Epicurus is the closest philosophy gets to self-help, and could be the exact right book for some people dealing with the heightened anxieties of the moment. It’s encouraging that these thinkers are finding an audience through popular recommendation, even when the Stoics, Epicureans, and Academic skeptics are treated like an intellectual backwater in your average Phil dept.

This guy has truly changed my life. He sparked my interest in self improvement, and he brought the idea of stoicism to my attention 2-3 years ago when I was 16 or 17. I was a really feminine as a kid, didn’t like to do work, just wanted to indulge in content consumption, nicotine, weed, etc. I hated myself. I believed that I would never find love. However over the past 2-3 years of working out, gaining control over my mind instead of being controlled by it, learning about and implementing stoicism, working instead of consuming content, so on and so on, I have managed to get in great shape, become a masculine young man who aspires to be a real stoic, got a gf, set a goal to become an engineer, and most importantly I have stopped obsessing over my own self hatred and began to actually like who I am.

Same here. My opinion on Epicurism is nice, but it has a lot of Christian principles in it. If you take TRUE Christianity at the root and the teachings of Christ, it is very similar. Stay away from things that can harm you. Things like drinking, smoking, and whatnot are good in moderation. Love others by loving yourself first. We've twisted Christianity which is why we are turning to older practices that are extremely similar, and if not, almost built off of it. People don't like some aspects of it so they burn the whole book. They took things out of context so the crucified the people who like it. I'm fine with epicurism, but it's not something new and fresh. It has a lot of Christan values and principles. TRUE Christian principles, not the ones we made up.. great video! I will read and purchase the book even though I don't agree with all of it. But, that's what learning is about!!!

I take philosophy classes so I know about the atomists from my class on Ancient Greek philosophy... I feel like it's worth mentioning that this was like a HUGE debate in philosophy even before Socrates showed up... A bunch of sophists (who got paid to teach philosophy rather than just spread it around as they went about their day like Socrates) debated what everything was made up of (trying to figure out what they called 'arche') and you got a wild amount of theories on this, not just atoms... Some believed everything was fire, or water, or earth, or air, or love and strife (I think some poet suggested), or number (as the Pythagoreans believed, they were followers of Pythagoras who worshipped numbers and hated the idea of irrational numbers aka numbers involving decimals... Very interesting...), or there was even Parmenides arguing that everything IS (as in he believed that everything is as it is because nothing changes and time isn't real, I'd suggest you refer to Zeno's Paradoxes to make sense of this position... The answers involve mathematics that the Greeks didn't have...) You did have the atomists though who did suggest that everything was made up of tiny things called atoms, HOWEVER, these atomists didn't really know how it worked... They didn't understand sub-atomic particles and stuff... A big objection to them was basically "If everything is made up of these atoms, then what exists in the space between these atoms?" and obviously if you just answered "More atoms" you'd run into a infinite problem of being asked "What exists between those atoms?" So they really didn't have much of an idea of how atoms worked but when it comes to arche they were the closest in finding the correct answer... Still, it can also be interesting to look into Zeno's Paradoxes or also Heraclitus' perspective IMO... ONE THING I WILL SAY THOUGH (haven't watched this video so maybe it'll be covered) which is even more astounding than the atomists' conclusions I think... The Greeks also had a guy who used the pyramids and the Sun to fairly accurately determine that the Earth was spherical and they even approximated its size!!! (They were slightly off, but surprisingly close)... To be able to do that without satellite technology or even the technology to travel around much of the world seems impressive to me... Also I should mention that there were TONS of suggestions for the arche and I'm likely forgetting a few I was taught about...

I love Felix's philosophy vids! I want more!! Also with regards to Epicurism I think it's delusional in a sense that it implies we have greater control over our happiness and makes an unrealistic ideal seem attainable. Life is about balance, and we can't control our emotions and not even our cognition the majority of the time. For example, considering PTSD causes involuntary reexperiencing symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, etc. Which result in physical pain, adrenaline rush and so on, it is clearly unrealistic to say we can just logically think our way out of fears of uncertainties/difficulties in the future. They are reinforced by past experiences, for some to the point of being disabling. A better approach would be to unpick and disprove fears individually based on the context in which they appear and why. Also think its quite presumptuous to assume that we cease to exist when we die. The body doesn't cease to exist, it changes form, we don't know for sure what happens to the mind as its intangible. Nothing starts and stops it simply changes form, so why would the mind be any different. And also these days we also know that a bunch of hormones are released which seem to cause painlessness, these are better ways to address fear of death. But that fear will always be there because we live in uncertainty of what happens, there's evidence but its not deemed universally significant because its subjective. Hence we have a number of religions that have different ideas about the afterlife, its aim is to ease that fear of uncertainty. However when it comes to the concept of heaven, hell and purgatory it reintroduces fear of death in another way.
@rachaeladeline2 жыл бұрын
My opinion on it is Epicurism is nice, but it has a lot of Christian principles in it.

I absolutely love The Picture of Dorian Grey and Marius the Epicurean. My philosophy professor had us read those; it was a Death and Dying class that mainly focused on global philosophy and understanding of morality and hence there of. Another great addition is the Lives Of the Eminent Philosophers; it has a multitude of other works inside it that goes over that specifically underlining epicurism. Great stuff. I definitely love these kinds of videos from Pewds, since I don't really have anyone to engage with philosophically with. These ideals are fascinating and I wish more people are enthralled with it as I am. I'm pretty sure Pewds mentioned Dorian Grey in a book reading video he did like...a year, two ago when he did those before starting just philosophy based videos. I could be wrong, but the last book reading video was his down fall, or rather, up rise in philosophy based videos. I'm not complaining. lol.

@@Smarticus13745 Trying to figure that out myself. Although, I just graduated with an MSc in Internet and Game Studies too (practically social psychology with elements of computer science), along with some other extra studies. So, I'm actually a double major, and probably wouldn't recommend a philosophy degree on its own to anyone. But I do recommend reading and writing philosophy; not least as a way for cultivating better habits and self-understanding.

Hello . What time of day do you usually spend watching a video on KZbin? For example, say from 8 am to 10 am I am going to start my activity on KZbin and because I live in Iran, Our country's clock is not like other countries. My best friend also created a KZbin channel. I put his channel address on my first page. thank you

I'm curious how Epicurians based their practices on pleasure, while Buddhists based their practices on suffering. They both had similar goals, from my very basic understanding of the two, but they approached the same issue from two very different perspectives.

I think that has a lot to do with the where and the when of the philosophies' origin. The Greek societies or polis were very well developed and whilst some people weren't happy, they weren't suffering either. Suffering itself was perhaps not as common as it was in the case of Nepal and India where Buddhism was born. In the kingdom, suffering was a daily occurrence and thus for Gautama it was the best and perhaps the most valid occurrence to base his practices upon.

Wow, I just decided to check what Felix was up to, and saw this video. And honestly, I'm not surprised, but I am happy for him. He truly seems to have found the roots of the problems that he had/has, and he's actively trying to solve them, while also taking others with him on the journey. I remember watching his handfarting video a few years ago, and I could escape in that video for a bit, just light hearted humor. Now he puts out this content, and I love it, and it gives me the same feeling as back then. Even though he might have had some drawbacks, I still respect Felix. For what he did, and for what he is doing now. I hope he continues this book series.
