i had a moment, at one of the darkest times in my life when i'd almost given up, where i looked out and saw the sun rising after i'd stayed up all night. something about the way the clouds were and the quality of light on the trees made me incredibly amazed by the beauty. i remember thinking to myself: even if the rest of my life is nothing but misery, it'd be worth existing simply for having seen this, and the hope of possibly seeing something like it again will keep me going. i'm glad other people have felt this kind of thing too
@TheMonteCarlo

Fuck, this hits. Had a similar experience myself recently. Life truly is beauty. I think it was Bob Ross who said something around the lines of if we didn't have the low moments in our lives, we wouldn't be able to appreciate the good ones. I obviously butchered it but the point still stands true.

In High School my family was in and out of homelessness, after school and rehearsal for theater stuff during my senior year I worked in the dish pit at a sushi restaurant. I'd crack the door so I could peak at the sunset because I was just miserable in a hot humid kitchen over the smell of dead fish and had school all day. I always volunteered to take the trash out because it would give me a moment outside.

I've written this a couple of times now, almost on every philosophical review of yours - Being a high-school teacher at the age of 27, having been watching your videos for almost a decade now, and teaching English language (as a second language) as well as philosophy - your videos have truly helped me get the material closer to my students. There is something soothing and eye-opening in your approach. Readings are not presented merely as some "historic manuscripts", but rather as ideas and insights as relevant in modern day and age as they were then. Thank you.

I think Star Trek actually had a good take on the idea that without suffering you can't have good things. There's an episode where Captain Picard is confronted by a godlike entity (Q) and Q offers to let Picard go back in time and prevent a fight which ended in him being stabbed in the chest, an injury that in the present time is affecting his health. Picard accepts the offer and avoids the confrontation and is then transported to the "present" where instead of being a starship Captain he is a lowly ensign and understandably Picard is frustrated and curses Q but as he tells him this is what happens as a result of you not having that near death experience. As a result you never felt how fleeting life can be and how it should be lived to the fullest and as such you never had the drive to become a Captain - Picard takes this lesson and goes back in time once again to fight and be wounded and he smiles and laughs because he now understands that without this suffering he would never have achieved such joys as being the Captain of the flagship of a starfleet. It's not a deep deep dive into philosophy but it gets you thinking and that's what matters most

@grimreaper2680

I actually first heard about nihilism through an anime, it was pong pong the animation and I was interested about it so I googled to find everything on it and most of the stuff about it that came up was relating it to Friedrich Nietzsche. A lot of it even said that he was the father of nihilism and I believed it at first because that's everything that would come up, but then later I searched more about Friedrich Nietzsche personally and found out that it wasn't true. Nihilism has been before Nietzsche he wasn't the one who started it and wasn't the "father of nihilism" but everyone just correlates it to him because of a few of his beliefs and infact I later found out that he was the quite opposite of what nihilism stands for. I think the opposite of nihilism is existentialism, which is what he believed in I think.

Nietzsche is one of the worst philosophers, you do know this way of thinking is what lead him into mental illness, the man who criticized Christianity like no other and said Christians are sheep is the same guy who had to be taken care of for the rest of his life by his loving Christian mother , Nietzsches whole line of thinking is completely opposite to what he actually did/ lived in the real world , his down fall was claiming to have control of desires and fulfillment

I love hearing people’s interpretations on “Eternal Recurrence”, because it is one of the most obscure concepts in Nietzsche’s philosophy, and it has a great multiplicity of interpretations. One of them which differs from Pewds’ understanding is a darker one, which equals the eternal decision process that human has to fall back on no matter what one chooses. Humans arguably end up at the same spot, that is, “deciding on what to do next”, no matter what one chooses at this moment, ad infinitum. I guess this is the interpretation that leads to the nihilistic interpretation of Nietzsche, but it still inspires later philosophers on the radically undetermined freedom of human beings, such as Heidegger and Sartre. I am interested to see what Pewds think of this interpretation and whether the two can be reconciled.

I love this content, and yes! People tend to confuse Nietzsche with Schopenhauer (Who was an actual nihilist or pessimist), and they are not the same, they just take him out of context so much it's sad. My boyfriend (who recently passed away) was a big fan of Nietzsche, and he used to fight against his own self, and I found true beauty on it, true inspiration, I saw him suffer the worst of the diseases a person can experience, and he would still stand up for life... He was the most wonderful thing that has ever happened to me, and I am so glad I got to meet him, his death destroyed me like nothing else had, but because of his example I keep pushing forward, like he did. I would endure all of that pain once again if it means meeting him, and I glad my mindset has changed to that as well. Thanks for the video Pewds!

It's because what you heard about him from popular culture is wrong. Even the quote god is dead is misunderstood. He didn't say it triumphantly, he said it mourningly. "God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him. How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderer of all murderers? What was holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet owned has bled to death under our knives: who will wipe this blood off us?". This was a lament about how traditional religious values gave meaning to life, but science and technology gradually eroded spirituality and 'killed god'. His words were proven right with tje rise of communism and nazism in the 20th century where a continent that killed god clung onto new gods in the form of ideologies. Note that Nietzsche was very anti religion, but simply he acknowledged its role in the formation of meaning.

We had over 2 and a half years together and they were the best years of my life. To the day this person left, not a day had gone by that she didn’t make me smile and Vice versa. She could not explain clearly why she needed to leave, but she made it clear I was not at fault. I miss her with every inch of my being and this past 2 months has been extremely rough. If I was approached today and told I had to relive every second of my life the way it is now, I would weep for joy for I have never heard something so divine. So basically, I really enjoyed the video, you’re awesome man!

I wished this video never had an ending. Thanks pewds for bringing out awareness, I myself have been thankful too see worlds in different perspectives at a young age. I’m 19 now. Us humans tend too overthink life a lot. Life is simple life is gorgeous with out struggles in life you’ll never understand the value of having nothing. Shout out too JayZ

A while back i struggled with finding meaning to my life, I was depressed. What helped me get out of this state was literally thinking. I was alone most of the time by my own choosing and that got me more time to just sit down and think about things. What I figured out was that life is never meaningless, or another way to think of it; it's VERY meaningless. No matter what you are doing at any point, it's meaningful but also meaningless. It's meaningful because you are alive and that's all that matters. It's meaningless because nothing really matters in the end of it all, and I do not mean that in a negative way. Since nothing really matters in the grand scheme of it all, why not enjoy life as it is? Nothing really matters, so might as well make something good out of it. Always do the thing that makes you happy, don't pressure yourself because you feel like you haven't accomplished anything, just you being alive is accomplishing something, something big. If you watch youtube for a whole day and nothing else, it's fine. You have done something you enjoyed, and that is all that matters.

I also reached this conclusion about life after a similar depressive episode. It was the worst I've ever been and I was tormented by existential dread, and paralyzed by choice. "What should I do with my life?" I was so scared of making a bad decision that I was stuck making none. Inevitably making a decision nonetheless. Eventually I am pretty sure I hit rock bottom, the two ideas seemed cohesive, they made sense. Life is meaningless. We are all going to die, the sun will engulf the earth at the end of it's life, and even the universe will burn itself out. This is the life path for everything, and although I maintain a pessimist view of existence in it's entirety, I am much more at peace. Life is meaningless, so I'll try the things I want to without being afraid of what people think, if I'm not happy doing something I'll change it, or at least try to. I feel like I'm lucky, I've essentially made peace with the fact that I am going to die someday. I had a harder time getting there than a lot of people. I wanted to disappear, I'd often say if a truck was going to hit me I'd let it. Depression is an illness but my thoughts and feelings were still my own, coming to peace with the nature of life didn't happen because I was depressed, it just happened during.

@@excuseme2770 I am currently going through a similar thing to you. The paralysed by choice thing stemmed from me graduating a couple of months ago and now I have no idea what I want to do with the limited time I have in existence. I’ve still yet to make a decision so I’m unemployed and not even looking for work, but I’m on antidepressants which has helped me at least function somewhat properly for the time being.

This was good until the last part lol. That’s awful advice. You’re basically saying the opposite of what he said, you need to dig into why you’re stuck wanting to watch youtube all day instead of going out and living life & saying “yes” to life

Your argument is very dangerous. You should pressure yourself to be a decent and productiv human being. You cant always give in to your lust. You cant have pleasure all your life, without being a burden to other people. You should develop good morality in life, which decide your deeds. These deeds bring real meaning to life. And thats why life isnt meaningless. Its just the harder way, without a shortcut. It needs real effort. You get the goods not until the finishline.

I really wish I knew about this philosopher so much earlier! They it’s interpreted kind of reminds me about how Buddhism was taught to me in a large way. The whole point of Buddhism is to acknowledge suffering, but then learn to not hate it. The best way it was put to me was “When a flower is growing there is anticipation, when it blooms there is joy, and when it dies there is sadness - but the flower will grow again in another cycle, so why feel sadness?”

@@1pcfred Why are you all hating therapists so much? You clearly dont understand their use in society. We are going to have so many more psychotherapists as depression and suicide is rampant in a world of abundance. There are far more people that need to understand their emotions and reactions, they arent gonna run out of a job soon. Happy people still get use from therapists. What a truly ignorant notion to make. youre not edgy dude.

@@1pcfred Are you blaming depression on therapists? Why are you so close minded and salty for? We have too few therapists, there is no way they can solve 2 million suicides per year. We havent solved obesity and starvation eithe (which has similar numbers of death). you gonna blame that too on them? Youre on angry little man.
