Don’t forget it’s got access to swords dance too. Empoleon is crazy versatile and i love it. It’s useable as a physical, special attacker. Can be used defensively with Roost/ rest,substitute and iron defense. You can also go with support with haze, helping hand, stealth rock and knock off.

Empoleon in the original Diamond and Pearl can literally finish the entire Pokémon League, all you need is Surf and some Leppa Berries. It's fun, managed to get maxed coins because of that.

In monotype I used to use empoleon as a bulky physical sweeper holding an assault vest. Against normal teams they would often send smeargul out first with the move that drops all stats one stage. Defiant would kick in a give me max attack boost and I could out speed the swap out or use priority aqua jet. I like the new ability but it would have been nice to have defiant as a possible ability as well.
