It looks good first but it's worse the more you look at it. The problem is Unreal "slap on and go" is easy but leaves poor results. For example the water is just a big pastel blob here. The cart and grass in the starting looks awesome, as well as the lighting at nights. But generally it's really off from WoW's artstyle. To do a proper work it has to be modified by hand in each zone which is a lot of work and they probably won't do. Cause they would have to redo light sources in every corner of world.

Lanterns too! You can make a lantern with survival, or temporary torches. It's pretty awesome. There's a darker nights patch you can play with on turtle right now and I love it.

@@dyyylllaannn I mean I wouldn't mind a minor paladin rework, ngnl. No auto attack classes. Emphasis on MINOR. All they had to do is add a few zones in unfinished regions, a handfull of dungeons, some more recipes and make sure they tie into the progression and don't make other things obsolete. For example I think there is no dungeon between monastary and mauradon with proper caster loot, while there is an overabundance of warrior gear. A new dungeon in the 40s range would be perfect. Some more endgame zones, such as Hyjal and so on... Maybe a 3 man dungeon in between? Or a solo dungeon? Why does it always have to be 5 players? In classic they played around with group sizes, for example ubs is 10 man and lbs supposed to be 5 man. We have 10 man raids, 20 man raids and 40 man raids. It would fit in perfectly. Maybe go crazy and add in an 80 man raid lol. As long as it's not disruptive to the overall gameplay and fits into the lore they can try many things. What did we get? Cata classic classes on the vanilla map with retail game design. Thanks for combining the 3 worst things of each era Blizzard.

yeah, and if you look into turtle wow further you'll see that they are acually making a proper classic+, they have high elves (pre-fall blood elves), goblins, multiple new zones like Gilneas, reworked classes etc in the vanilla game.

@CatDad09 To clarify, I didn't do any map work for WoW, only War II BNE, Starcraft 64, Starcraft TMOTM, Warcraft III and TFT. I did early quest design and quest writing for WoW across some 40 quests that were released with the first iteration of the game. My interest in Turtle WoW sparked for nostalgia to go over that old work, and it was pretty much my only option to play it as it was back then. And here we are, voicing a trailer for them and playing everyday. ;)

This is by far the best version of Vanilla wow that has been created. We have added zones, quests, dungeons, raids, mobs, professions, reworked talents, added class/race combos, new races. Literally EVERYTHING you want out of a true Vanilla +, in the same vein as OSRS, Turtle wow is it! I quit at the beginning of Dragonflight and wrath classic and havent looked back since.

Here's the thing: This is hosted in the UK. How the legality works is 1.12.1 is considered an abandoned version of the game because there's no active development going on for that specific version (Classic is different from Vanilla). On top of that, given the + content is fan made, it's also considered transformative work as the content is not available in the base game (1.12 or Classic). So to address concerns, this server is not being taken down anytime soon. This is why SWG is still a thing as a private server, warmane has been around for almost 20 years now, and even City of Heroes is still about and kicking. All considered transformative work or abandoned works. Nostalrius was brought down for both using the original source code + it being hosted in the US where the fair use/abandon ware laws are different.

While impressive, I think sometimes these lighting upgrades seem to try too hard to make insane contrast. Take for instance at 4:25. The underside of that tree should not be pitch black. It's the middle of a bright sunny day. While the leaves provide shade, it doesn't shield from all light. Light bounces off the ground and from other directions. It should be dimmer yes, but not pitch black.

That's because original vanilla assets like that tree used "tricks" to make the models appear better than what they actually are and that was also a part of the rendering engine. Since modern mode is using UE's PBR rendering that doesn't have these built-in, it doesn't look that good. Assets like this that don't fit will either be re-modeled to fit modern or there will be custom tweaks to modern rendering to fir these old assets.

Also, keep in mind from the perspective of where the camera is looking at that tree it could be pitch black, considering the sun will be directly in your characters eyes. If you were physically under the tree, it would not be pitch black. But from the perspective of standing in the broad sunlight, looking into a shaded area, it could very well be realistically pitch black. There are real life examples of that all over the place every day if you are used to working outside in the sun.

I used to be an admin on Dominon WoW (later Dominon Xtreme Gaming) the type of stuff you see now was a freaking pipe dream for us back in 2009. I am completely jaw dropped at this showcase. We contributed significant amounts of code to the emulator being used (I think it was called Trinity?) this is so cool. Blizzard needs to chll on going after private servers; they charge for their game and people should be allowed to use their property in any way they see fit.

Cool theory. The issue is any game made with unreal engine looks like it’s made with unreal engine. Why anyone to do it right is Blizzard with their own engine and art style. Most Unreal engine games look overly glossy and plastic. Doesn’t look good. Especially trying to stay true to a strong art style already. Fun to play with. Turtle wow finishes all the places that blizzard didn’t. Karazhan crypts is a playable dungeon, caverns of time dungeon, gilneas zone and dungeon located south of silverpine forest. And they’re releasing Karazhan raid (tier 3.5) by the end of summer, followed by Grim Batol (tier 4) raid in 2025.

Turtle wow has been around for 6 years allready and the server is allready insane right now. Its literally what Blizzard should have make Classic+ to be. They've added 1700+ new quests, new zones (including Mount Hyjal a lvl 60 endgame zone), new raids, new dungeons, new loots, two new proffessions Survival and Gardening (Jewelcrafting coming in next patch), High elves and Goblins (with their own starting zones), class balancing so boomkins and paladins are more viable as an example, new music to the new zones and areas and so on. Its literally insane what they have done and its on par with Blizzard quality. Next patch they are doing tier 3.5 with a new raid that will be harder than Naxxramas, each class and spec will have new tier sets. If you are like me and love the lvling aspect of Classic wow but quit at lvl 60 because it feels like you are basically ''done'', Turtle wow is gonna be perfect for you. So much more content at endgame on this server and you feel like there is a reason to continue because they are adding new endgame content for future patches

You know, I'm going to be honest. Even though there's a TOS Against private servers and whatnot, I genuinely don't think Blizzard ACTUALLY cares that much. If you were a private server person, and was able to switch to live servers, and be invited to blizzcons. I think it's clear that the notion of them caring about it is slim, as long as you aren't directly promoting it I suppose, to flock players over to private servers. I can probably bet that some employees at Blizzard probably play Turtle WoW, and take inspiration with certain things.

The problem I have with Turtle Wow is that their new content turned into a ton of bloat. The more recent class changes did not focus on fixing raid balance issues. Honestly I can't even figure out what their class change focus was other than ruining the 'Classic' game play of my favorite class. The graphics update is meaningless to me. My interest, if it bears fruit, is Project Epoch which is Vanilla+, but on the Wrath client, using TBC talent and class changes but at lvl 60 cap. These are proven changes and also have further class tweaks that directly tackle the known historical class issues in a meaningful and logical way. I also like their custom content approach far better than Turtle Wow's "bloat the leveling process with endless, new quest hubs". Good on them for attempting the graphic upgrade at least.

I have, after playing it on and off for the last few years on the wildcard and free pick servers, I'm betting ascensions COA will feel just like retail. They have chosen the superpowered player route, the wildcard mode people are doing upwards of 50k dps a lvl 60. ridiculous skills and combos that fit the new COA classes themes. I suspect it will carry over to the COA classes and be ridiculous.

4:17 We already went through this over two decades ago before wow with ultima online. They decided private servers are fine if they aren't charging subs. Since then EA never pursued private servers. The most popular method to play ultima online right now is the liveliest and most custom server there ever was called Outlands.

Well, TWoW accepts "donations" so that's that. Pretty sure the reason they can't get them to shut down the server is because the server is located in Russia or something. ( Not sure about the exact location rn. ) But they definently tried to shut it down.

Outlands is absolutely nuts, there will surely be a WoW server that will customize the core game in a way outlands does and make it a better version of itself.

No it’s not about private servers, it’s about Blizzard and active IP it’s a very different situation. I went through this entire debacle like 7 years ago and learned very thing I could about it lol

don't think theres much they can do, not sure if its the same for wow but from what I know from runescape p servers they are hosted in certain countries that stop them legally interfering whether its created from their IP or not warmanes been around 10-15 years and blizzard couldn't shut them down

What do you mean? It has been working, Twow has been a classic+ server since 2018 and had 13k concurrent players for a while. It is insanely successful in Asia and they had to open up 6 realms, their realms are capped at 10k.
