Mark Hayes certainly did his best to dress up this very tired song, but as my mother always said, "You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear." This song was composed in the '60s when every Tom Dick and Harry and every nun who knew three chords on the guitar thought they could compose music for the Thoroughly Modern Roman Catholic Church as they booted aside all the gorgeous music written for the Church down through the centuries by musical geniuses. Gag me.

Go ahead and read up on the composer. He had no training in music, and after he pooped out this little ditty, he left the priesthood, leaving the rest of us to have to endure versions of this schlocky thing forever.

I became Catholic after having been from the Church of England, which my family still belong to. But believe you me, I was completely and utterly gobsmacked when I heard the absolute rubbish that Catholics are singing at Mass. The Anglican musical tradition is not as rich as the Catholic tradition, however many people outside of mainland Europe would assume the opposite, as the RCC in the English speaking world is so disinclined to celebrate its extremely rich musical heritage. At my first Mass, I expected something ancient and beautiful, but I was knocked for six and in two minds about returning after hearing Shine Jesus Shine. I was sad for quite a while, missing the beautiful CofE hymns, but I don’t go to Church for It’s hymns but for it’s Gospel, (however it would do wonderful for Church PR if they embraced the old hymns completely.) Anyway, I can’t complain about it to anyone I know anymore because I’ve said all I can, countless times, and exhausted the topic (as well as exhaust everyone around me by speaking about it too often), but whenever the opportunity comes up to express my extremely unenthusiastic feelings to a stranger, i’m there. Happy Easter by the way!!!!

If everyone had the same mentality as you, those old songs also not have been produced. The message and intention is important. But if you merely bash it because it is new and you dislike it in general, the fault lies with you.
