You kinda missed the point: He forgot Kurisu because he suppressed memories of her in his head in order to let her go to a happy scientific future. The memories came back when he wanted to do it himself, watching Kurisu upset. I don't think her shock therapy would have helped.

I think it would be more interesting this way: Okabe doesn’t have time to reach Kurisu at the airport, and she flies away. After some time in America, Kurisu is walking through the streets and runs into Okabe. So to speak, a reference to the original. And it would be more emotional.

i think that would be cool but might lack the emotional depth of the original. in the original neither of them knew the other, yet they FELT they were looking for each other. them looking for each other and running into each other kinda loses the impact here

yea i totally agree, the ending was my biggest hang up with this manga too. maybe i phrased this the wrong way. they hadn't met or spoken in the steins;gate worldline. okabe knew her, but kurisu didn't know him at all, and neither of them had any idea where the other might be. for all intents and purposes, they were complete strangers wandering around in the dark. yet, they were looking for each other. and they felt that the other was looking for them too. it's not just that they end up meeting each other that makes it impactful, it's that the bond of love is connecting them across time and space
