The original line in the aforementioned song is: "I'm getting tired of all this bulls_it goin' round. I'm getting tired of all these small-town clowns. Busting my puppet hump. Grinding my puppet stump. I got nothing to prove, so f_ck it!" Don't know why I put this here. Don't ask.

Holy shit. When I was a child, I had a plastic giant squid with two posable tentacles (it eventually [fell]/[was torn] apart and was lost forever) and the one in this video looks exactly how I remember mine. I didn't think it was possible for TMBG to be any more intertwined with my childhood than it already was, but apparently I thought wrong. Seriously, how do serendipities like this even happen? And now I want another squid just like it.

I think I get this song,it starts off with,"She's in love with the dark",then the squid starts ranting about how he hates dreaming,and then the girl.type.vocals come in saying how they're "taking over",and it ends with,"no more sunlight please",its a battle between light and dark. dark wins.

TMBG music is based on the use of cerebral constructs such as non-sequitors, reversed and oblique grammer, and fill in the blank ideas. They will take a musical characteristic and often build the idea around it without following the logic of the idea but of the characteristic. An example is Mink Car with the characteristic Burt Bacharach chord structures and progressions but the idea is the High Society trappings associated with the music, hence the references to Mink, diamonds, chauffers.

I don't see how any one can say they are boring and unoriginal when they really have no style, they change with every song. Unlike Green Day or any other mainstream or even alot of indy bands who have one style, and I am not talking about punk, emo, screamo, etc. But how they sing and how their music is. Most bands how a days are just formulated.

Also, the way the part of the song presumably sung by the squid ends with talking about taxidermy reminds me of apollo 18 as that album was very morbid but in a funny way. This song is made up of three failed song ideas, perhaps that was a scrapped "fingertips" from apollo 18?
@doubledenial81785 жыл бұрын
@@stoplight2554 In case you're still wondering, two of the "Fingertips" in this song are re-recorded clips from older TMBG songs. The instrumental after the "She's in love with her broken heart" is an instrumental version of a podcast jingle called "Mono", and the taxidermy part is from a live-only song called "Puppets Gonna F*ck You Up". Pretty neat.

I can enjoy the song without knowing the meaning, but it's always fun for some people (including me) to go a little deeper and try to unravel the deep meanings they were thinking of when they wrote it. Their next album is another kid's album, but the one after that is going to be an adult album. Perhaps the reason for no more live action videos is due to the fact that they've gotten older (than They've ever been) and aren't as fresh as they used to be. Music still rocks.

The last video from them that I've seen was for "Doctor Worm", and that one wasn't literal (that I recall), though there was a degree of doctor-ness about it, I suppose. And "Experimental Film" was totally non-sequitur (though admittedly that was largely due to The Brothers Chaps.) What are their most recent videos? (That they themselves have had a hand in? Not counting the Venue Songs videos, either.) I guess I could find out on their website...

I know I'm stupid for even attempting to analyze things that should just be enjoyed at face value. I do my best to see They Might Be Giants as quirky and even humorous, not as serious and meaning-laden as, say, Pink Floyd. Might be an unpopular opinion but there's always been a part of me that wishes the song continued in the same style as the "nautical dreams" part. I know they get away with shifting styles a lot but I genuinely feel like the 2nd half would fit better as its own song.
