Agreed! I personally started using Ubuntu in 2009 I believe, as my first foray into Linux (downloaded that dual-boot installer for Windows). Ubuntu has had its ups and downs since then, but the fact that it’s still going strong today, and is the base for so many distros, is testimony to its success.

Same here. I miss those free cdroms with their awesome cover and printing. I actually gave them away many years ago, and that was a mistake. Someone from Canonical told me they're working on a new shop with these types of offerings after the old one got shutdown. Looking forward to that!

I've been trying lots of distros, stood with Mint and Debian for a while then switched to Ubuntu 22.04. Solid experience. Now upgrading to 23.10 and sure to be happy if it gets any better. Thanks & shout out from Tenerife (Canary Islands 🇮🇨🏝)

Oh you can do it that way, but it’s often easier to solve if you start at the end (in this case, the Ubuntu logo in the middle) and work back towards the start.

Refined look & fancy flat UI, yet after all these years file manager's text formatting is incredibly awkward. Filename (at 6:38) displayed in 3 lines as: 2023-10-2 0 15-...mp4 😱 It's these small details that go unfixed for decades that contribute to keeping desktop linux a fringe OS.

Began using Ubuntu from 20.04 LTS and always upgraded to STS versions. This 23.10 has given the best visual experience and is not much complicated just like the previous versions. I am not an expert in computer or a developer or repair person, so I cannot comment much on the performance of kernel, security, package managers and repositories in detail. However, I would like to hear from someone about these aspects in detail

How would this (newer) version of Ubuntu perform / feel on older hardware? For cases where Windows is becoming too slow to use (older, Win7 era hardware), even with re-installs etc. I just decided to install Mint MATE on an older i5 3rd gen 4GB laptop as my first 'real' Linux experience. Getting used to it etc. as an alternative to Windows. MATE was recommended most for older hardware, for its stability and lower computer power requirements. I do have an SATA SSD installed as boot drive, but I'm also curious how it would perform with regular HDDs. I can't do much about computing power. Thank you in advance.

Install another 8gb of Ram, and Ubuntu will run just fine on a 3rd gen i5. It will also run just fine on Linux Mint Cinnamon.

Hello from Russia, why do you think they don't want to bring back the global menu? this is very convenient, because it is noticeable that the top panel remains empty, as if it were missing something.

It’s probably because most of the built-in apps now use header bars with all the buttons and men in its toolbar (like the Files app for example). So there isn’t much need for menu bars in those apps (or any app designed to follow GNOME’s guidelines). It would be nice to have it for apps that still use menu bars though. A lot of other desktops like KDE and MATE have the ability to add it, but GNOME (what Ubuntu uses) doesn’t currently have the capability. You could try a flavour of Ubuntu like Kubuntu or Ubuntu MATE which has the ability to add it, or try Ubuntu Unity which uses the previous Unity desktop that Ubuntu used to use and has the global menu.

There used to be an actual Ubuntu Gnome flavour when Ubuntu still used Unity by default, and it was very vanilla Gnome. But yeah, nowadays Ubuntu does add a lot on top of Gnome (though Gnome is slowly adding in some of those features in recent versions; now I’m just waiting on accent colours!)

@@PlanetLinuxChannel you get me confused because it is the one of reasons why I started to use Ubuntu again with the 23.10 release. The New installer lets you choose an accent color in the final step although it is buggy a bit and you need to go to settings>Ubuntu desktop to make the icons change color. Gnome has a selection of accent colors (not as custom as kde tho which is fine). This setting affects the icon colors and the color of the buttons. It is like the cinnamon desktop where you have preselected color themes. If you are waiting on tinting with accent color then we will wait together for a while. Anyways nice sum of the release. I like how little this one actually includes out of the box. There is no office suite. There is nothing that is unneeded. The normal install is the minimal install too. Ubuntu is getting fascinating again.

Apologies for the confusion. I meant that standard Gnome, not Ubuntu’s implementation of it, doesn’t yet have accent colour selection. That’s currently specific to Ubuntu.

I’ve heard it’s decent these days, but I’ve only ever used it between a laptop screen and external monitor. You could always try booting into the live USB image and configure your monitors in that to see if it works before you install it.

Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to have Free Pascal (it’s available as a Debian / Ubuntu, etc. package on their website) but the Snap catalogue does have a pretty good selection of popular apps. Between it and the standard Ubuntu repositories (.deb packages) the majority of apps are covered. The lack of Flatpak support is unfortunate and there are a few apps exclusive to that format, but not many (and its support can still be added, just not in the default App Centre app).

just installed this on hardware and test drove other current releases, ultimately I went back to Ubuntu 23.10 because their Gnome implementation is great and all my software has better compatibility so I don't have to arm wrestle with AUR packages. I also Tested TPM encryption but that failed when after the install I was prompted to enter my encryption key which the installer never gave me a chance to backup before restarting. I do like ZFS root as an option again from the sleek flutter installer.

Way superior to MacOS desktop and Windows 10/11 desktop. It's very interesting that the most superior desktop computing experience is now very definitively on Linux while Apple and Microsoft are both definitely losing their mojo for that kind of thing.

Agreed. Granted there are all sorts of different user interfaces that you can use on Linux, but that also means there’s really great ones like this. Admittedly there are admittedly some specific things they do better (game availability on Windows and lots of nice-looking GUI apps and cross-device connectivity on macOS), but Linux is even starting to solve those shortcomings.

Plus there are plenty of repositories, etc, that aren't locked down and censored by big corporate agenda crap. Is like my cell phone which has a de-googled Android install. I get a phone that isn't constantly data and geo-location spying on me and I get access to not only Playstore but other repositories where Google has no censorship sway whatsoever.

@@MrTomroI spent a day and a half trying to install Ubuntu on a USB SSD from both a live environment USB stick and VMs on both MacOS and Windows. Never got it to work. To install some apps I had to use the command line. So, instead of doing productive work I spun my wheels and got nothing accomplished. This was a good reminder of why once I got my Raspberry Pi set up I let it run in the background without touching it.

The „Files“ app still feels quite behind the „Finder“ App in MacOS, but that‘s more of a Gnome problem. But Ubuntu being Ubuntu - why nor make it better?

Very true. I do think Files has gotten much more usable in the past couple years, and is almost good enough, but it’s definitely still light on features and customization. That said, while there are certain things I absolutely love about macOS’ Finder, there are also some things in it that annoy me (like the fact that items in the icon view don’t stay to any kind of sorted grid; they just plop wherever in whichever order and you have to choose to “clean up” or sort them).

I don’t believe so, though I haven’t actually checked. You could install the extension that it’s based on though, via the Extension Manager app (installable) or from here: extensions.gnome.org/extension/3733/tiling-assistant/

I'm still on jellyfish on my laptop but would try out next LTS version. This looks cool. As a life-long Windows user, I do have that cozy feeling you've mentioned whenever I'm using Linux. My first experience with Linux dates back to 2008 when my brother installed it on his PC, which left my 11 year old ass totally confused for a while when the computer booted Linux instead of Windows and I couldn't play video games. 😂 I've been sporadically using it since 2017 and actively for about two years now. Given 22.04 is a mismatch of GNOME Shell and GNOME app versions, I would say just bite the bullet and upgrade. It's only 6 more months until the next upgrade, and you're getting an overall better system.

yea, this is really a beta for the new Ubuntu 24.04 - many extensions don't work for Gnome 45/Ubuntu 23.10 that work on Ubuntu 22.04 - It will be polished when 24.04 arrives.

I’ve found 23.10 to be pretty solid, other than the issue of a lot of extensions not yet working with GNOME 45 as mentioned. Fortunately a lot of those should be updated in time for 24.04.

Yeah, I’ve heard similar sentiments from others. It’s been a few years since I’ve used an NVIDIA card (was just rocking integrated Intel graphics for a while and now I have a Radeon GPU) but I do recall various issues on NVIDIA and with those drivers.

Ubuntu was my first ever Linux experience back in 2019. Surprisingly user friendly. Today I decided to give Linux another go since as of late, Windows 11 is just issue after issue so I chose Garuda after it was sold to me as a 'beginner' distro catered for gaming and emulation. After spending 8 hours trying to get it to work and reverting to previous snapshots I just gave up. Since I had a much better experience with Ubuntu a few years ago I'm considering giving that one another go.

Garuda is a great gaming distro, but I don’t know that I’d consider it particularly beginner-friendly; it provides a LOT of options that aren’t always the most well-explained. Perhaps Nobara would be a better choice for a distro that’s set up for gaming as it has everything set up out of the box and doesn’t seem to require quite as much tinkering. That said, Ubuntu is pretty good as of late. There are some weird oddities, especially with their use of Snap packages for many of the included apps, but I’ve found 23.10 to be a pretty good release.

I been using Ubuntu 23.10 for some time and like 23.04 is still not as good as windows 11. For example autorotation doesn't work with Wayland however work with x11, suspension doesn't work well, we cant install a deb package with app center, some apps doesn't work , also there isn't a ai tool,...

Wayland is getting better and better (with some recent fixes in its most recent release a few days ago that will probably be in 24.04) but it does still have a few issues that have yet to be ironed out over X11. Does the new Software app not open when you attempt to open / run a .DEB file? A good program for installing those graphically is gdebi.

Hmm, I didn’t run into that, but I also didn’t do custom partitioning. Maybe you could create the EFI partition in GParted before running the installer? I did find the new installer to be slightly finicky though. At first it wouldn’t connect to a Wi-Fi network for me.

Hi i am using this version of Ubuntu, but playing Counter Strike 2 with a Nvidia 1060 6GB + AMD Ryzen 9 3900X + 16gb i am having screen tearing (the screen became blinking and turn black) any way to resolve this issue? Any problem with the GPU driver?

It could possibly be the GPU driver. Do make sure that you’re using the proprietary NVIDIA drivers and not the open-source Nouveau ones, as they often have issues. You can go into the Software & Updates application and select the Additional Drivers tab to see if you can install the proprietary NVIDIA drivers. Otherwise, are you by chance able to confirm whether or not any other operating systems (Windows or other Linux distros) have had this issue?

Hmmm, I’m not entirely sure. I found one person mention that they fixed the screen tearing by adding the following command to be run at startup then reboot (please backup anything important first just in case something doesn’t work right!) nvidia-settings --assign CurrentMetaMode="nvidia-auto-select +0+0 { ForceFullCompositionPipeline = On }" You can add it via the Startup Applications settings.

You may technically be able to boot it, but the single-core Atom processor and 1 GB or RAM will likely pose a problem, as they’re a fair bit below the recommended system requirements of a dual-core processor and 4 GB of RAM. You could still try it, but something a bit lighter on resources might be more practical. Perhaps Zorin OS Lite edition, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Linux Mint XFCE edition, or Linux Lite.

OMG too much fluff you forget the point that SNAP packages are inherently 5x slower then the same apps on any other non snap Linux distro period. just test and compare them for yourself. they keep trying to hide this fact. its like windows bloatware added to every app you install with snap not to mention they are still collecting selling your data..

I've seen some reviewing this as they run it in windows as a VM , I'm sorry to say for those people who expect to have this as if it's a windows addon you are seriously on the wrong path!!!! lol VM may be used by some to run software they want but that isn't the intended use, it for testing functionality in a secure environment!

VMs definitely do have their purposes, and there’s nothing wrong with running it as a VM if it suits your needs, but don’t expect the same performance as running on actual hardware. I try to do all my reviews now on actual hardware as it gives the best representation of what the system can do and what it will be like for anyone else installing it on their machine.

I certainly empathize with that; I keep a Windows install around just for some specific games. The anti-cheat situation is slowly getting better though. Many games that use EasyAntiCheat or Battle Eye, like Fall Guys and Rocket League (the Windows version, as the Linux version is duplicated) now run pretty much perfectly on Linux under Steam Proton, including online functionality. It’s an uphill battle with plenty of games that still don’t work, but it is getting significantly better. Hopefully you’ll be able to play all your favourite games on Linux soon!

Yep. Dual booting can cause issues, but I’ve found that having each system on a separate drive helps avoid a lot of them. Then you just pick which drive you want to boot from via your BIOS / UEFI boot menu when you turn your PC on. You definitely have to be careful whenever doing installs though that you don’t just choose “Erase and Install” or something, and instead really you attention to which drive it wants to install the system onto.

I’ve personally found Nobara and Garuda to be good choices specifically for gaming. Chimera OS is also good, but it’s trying to essentially run the Steam Deck’s SteamOS on a computer, so it has some weird quirks.

I downloaded the installer as soon as it was available (after the hate speech incident) and installed it to one laptop. Haven't used a Buntu flavor since 2016-ish (Fedora/OpenSuse guy). So far my only problem with it is that it favors snap installs. Other than that, it's a very solid distro!

I install Ubuntu under Windows 10 HyperV. Guess what. I get no sound. Still in 2024 Linux can't get it right. I mean seriously guys. People just want to use their computer to watch KZbin and play a few games. If you can't even get that right with your operating system, why don't you give up already and stop trying. This sucks. The Gnome desktop swcks. It doesn't even have the equivalent of a Start menu or Apple Pull down menu. I'm left scratching my head, how do I get to the settings, how do I power down, how do I launch any application that's not pinned on the taskbar. Don't tell me Ubuntu is great. I've tried to use it for 10 years and still... it can't get the basics right. It can't do sound.

I do wonder if the sound issue is just as much an issue when running it through Hyper-V. Not saying that sound is never an issue, but I haven’t had problems getting sound straight out of the box for quite a long time now (also, perhaps give 22.04 or 23.10 a try?). The GNOME desktop is definitely different, and admittedly not for everyone. But I would argue that different isn’t necessarily bad. You said it yourself; Windows has a Start menu for launching apps and searching for files / settings, whilst macOS has a dropdown menu for accessing settings and system functions, and an Applications view for opening apps, and Spotlight to search for things. They’re both drastically different from each other, and I think Ubuntu makes it fairly straightforward to open apps or search (the app grid icon on the panel). It’s a definite learning curve, but so are macOS and Windows if you’re coming from a different system.

It's most likely a hyper issue. That said, hope you're enjoying the 100+ malware infected files that came in the form of digitally signed drivers that Windows users got this year directly via Windows Update. Big blue is watching you.

On a separate, but related note to that, I just learned that Windows doesn’t include drivers for ANY Wi-Fi 6 or 6E adapters. So despite modern Windows supposedly having Wi-Fi drivers out of the box now, it doesn’t work with practically any recent motherboard with built-in Wi-Fi.

I’ve honestly had a lot of criticism towards Canonical and Ubuntu in the past, and 23.10 still has some of those issues. But this was truly the first Ubuntu release in a good 7 or 8 years that actually felt really enjoyable to use. No Canonical money here. And if there were, it’d be very obviously “sponsored”!

Very true! Though most Linux desktops have had some desktop features (like workspaces / virtual desktops) for decades before Windows got it. That could go back and forth all day, but regardless, I’m happy to see more ease of use coming to Linux.

@ettoreatalan8303 Good point. Microsoft certainly collects plenty of data. They should at least be putting it to good use! I honestly do like some of the window management features in Windows 11. There are extensions on various Linux desktops that can achieve much of that functionality, but the desktops have been slow to implement them directly.

I definitely do love some good transparency! I used KDE Plasma for a long time just because I could get nice translucent themes.

Absolutely love Fedora, and KDE! It used to be quite a pain to get all the optional third-party stuff enabled and set up on Fedora, but these days it’s a breeze.

"Blur my shell" extension will add beautiful blur and transparency to Gnome and make it look much more modern and similar to what you know from MacOS. That said, current Gnome looks and feels miles above more mature than the ugly Windows 8 tiles even at default settings.

I’d be curious to know what you don’t like about it. I can certainly understand disliking its prioritization of Snap packages or not supporting Flatpaks, but I think it’s pretty functional and looks decent. I personally find that the Microsoft Store or Mac App Store each their fair share of unique issues.

Yes of course it's fast because you have only just installed it. Once you install all your apps and transfer your data over, it will turn into complete testes balls 😊
