Z 95 no need to get heated mate, I’m a saints fan and don’t really care about this game. But if you have watched footy during the last ten years you know that a lot of these freekicks that weren’t paid are often paid. In other games even if you eventually get a handball after being tackled to the ground the umpire pays holding the ball simply because you had an earlier chance and got caught. What we really need is an investigation into how we can better umpire the game, we don’t need to change more rules.

As far as and investigation on how to umpire the game properly I 100% agree with you on that umpiring has been nothing but trash this year and last but to use the umpiring from this game as an example I think you’ve missed your mark with that, your never going to get 100% spot on umpiring but going back over and watching this game I think it was one of the better ones having only 3 free kick difference between the too sides in such a heated game I wouldn’t call it any different. Z 95 I understand you. I just felt like this was an attempt to cover up their mistakes. They would never have admitted any faults because that would cause even more controversy. But yeah I understand umpiring is very tough because you can’t always be in the perfect position and you are expected to make no mistakes as a professional even though afl players who are also professionals make mistakes all the time. Every sport has this problem and Afl has it even worse because it’s 360 degrees game and unpredictable. I just find it frustrating that games can be decided by one or two perhaps dodgy free kicks.

This was explained very clearly. Scott put his head over the ball and two Essendon players them moved into him and made contact with the head. Ducking in a tackle is different to putting your head over the ball.

zacharim_ no he said that the umpires took that tackle as a prior opportunity but the other tackle they took as a push in the back. They “take” certain tackles in different ways and the way they judged the tackle was completely wrong implying that they gave the first tackle, leading up to the push in the back, wrong and so they gave the Collingwood player a opportunity to kick it out of his hands. If they thought it was something different then in any other circumstance that would’ve been a incorrect disposal.

2 big issues I took away were; If you have prior opportunity and get tackled you MUST immediately dispose of the ball, not go to ground and hang onto the ball, fight the tackle and then dispose. The second issue is if you have been tackled and and try to get rid of the ball it must be disposed of correctly, an incorrect disposal i.e. a throw or drop, results in a free kick. So the AFL are now saying you can drop or 'throw' the ball in an ATTEMPT to dispose and it will NOT result in a free kick. As a Junior umpire this just makes trying to explain to abusive parents/on-lookers more irate through confusion less helpful, not to mention the juniors just starting out. Im also a Collingwood fan and they are just terrible decisions. the AFL is getting worse every year.

What I hate most about this video is, the umps are trying to protect themselves so badly, next week we will look at calls made or calls not given and refer to this video and ask why it wasn't given. With the Stephenson one, if they don't have prior and they still attempt to handball/kick and don't make contact is that not dropping the ball or an incorrect disposal, the only way you wouldn't pay that is if the ball came out in the tackle. It's ridiculous, own up to your mistakes or make a hard print copy or the rules because it seems to change every bloody week!

Im sorry with the jack crisp one, the umpire says says "we cant penalise a player who disposed of the football". Thats garbage the rule states if he had prior opportunity the player must dispose of the ball IMMEDIATELY, in which he didnt dispose the ball IMMEDIATELY as there was enough time for him to be taken to ground in the tackle, so that should be HTB every day of the week.

The fact that they defended these decisions puts doubt in my mind on the integrity of the whole AFL. They're simply not correct calls. However, its one thing for an umpire to make a mistake, we're all human and it happens. You own up to it and you move on. To pretend that everything is fine here, when its clearly not, takes either extreme delusion or practiced doublethink. Potentially both. To Gaslight fans by saying these are correct, feels the exact same when the AFL says everyone wants a Night Grand Final and halftime show. No we don't. But the AFL makes its own reality it seems.

Some of the changes this year have been good (not having to kick out from inside the goal square and new player limits from centre bounce in particular) but the umpire inconsistency over these first 6 rounds is costing teams the match.

Stick with the 'old' holding the ball rule. If you get tackled, you HAVE TO get rid of the ball either by a kick or a proper handball. Get rid of the 'make a genuine attempt to get rid of the ball' because that just opens it up for different interpretations. What is a genuine attempt for one ump might not be for another.

I am an Essendon supporter and a Field Umpire so I shall dissect all this for you: 1. Play-on, correct disposal, CORRECT decision 2. Prior opportunity, as he was tackled, the ball has hit/touched the ground, meaning you have forfeited your chance to dispose of the football.. INCORRECT Decision, Should have been paid holding the ball 3. High tackle, must protect the head with front-on contact when initiated from the ess player - NOT coll player, CORRECT decision 4. High tackle, INCORRECT DECISION, Mcdonald has tried to "shrub" the tackle and the tackle has slipped up, a great case of a ruckman's tackle 5. Looks like he has kicked the ball, if he hasn't, there is one arm free in the tackle and he has had 3 seconds to legally dispose of the ball, CORRECT decision based on Hosken kicking the ball.

Ok, First one was holding the ball, he did not handball it and he had prior. Second, I admit, was a fair call play on. Third one, 100% not a high tackle, he ducked into it so I have no idea how they called that. Last one, first one (Stephenson) should have been holding the ball as he did not dispose of it correctly, you can clearly see he almost just threw it out. The umpires have got it all wrong. :/

Can we get the title renamed "'They're all wrong" sure he disposed of the ball but he disposed of the ball after he got clearly tackled for holding the ball which wasn't called? 2 times the play actually stopped which is a clear indicator that umpire has made an incorrect call. Absolutely disgraceful by the umpires. Instead of making excuses, try to make the umpiring better. It has been rubbish this entire season. Hate to have a grand final ruined with umpiring like this. Admit you got it wrong and improve from this AFL. If this is the "correct" interpretation of these rules, then every other game for the last few years have been umpired incorrectly.

I’m all against the over-umpiring of games, but clearly the umps in this match were too scared to screw up a close game. It’s clear they decided to ‘put the whistle away’ in the last quarter... which really doesn’t work where one team is deserving free kicks time and time again. The game got out of control and they screwed it up. This game should be used for umpiring training as ‘what not to do’ in close matches.

Pies fan here, it’s not just this game where the umpires were terrible, they’ve been terrible for north of a decade. Some of these decisions on this video and some decisions that aren’t in this video that should’ve been umpired properly. A lack of accountability at the umpires department is embarrassing and a total overhaul of the umpires department is required.
