@@l.b.603 social security costs money mate. When you don't have enough money you borrow, hoping that future generations can make enough to pay debt + interest (7-10%, usually). When that doesn't happen you need to find a way to make that money back, because you are drowning in debt, raising taxes is one way to do it. Raising income tax isn't a good strategy because voters don't like that very much. Property tax tends to fly under the radar, and is only noticed when it reaches the absurd level as it has in places like NY, NJ, CH, etc.

@Real Talk Really? Have you ever looked at taxation in a state constitution? If you did, could you show me where "sales", "excise", or "use" tax is permitted? Constitutional taxes can be for natural persons and corporations. But, the "governments" are working under artificial laws unless the people prevent that, they consent to being governed by them. Go look at your state GOVERNMENT CODE and see the corporate government. It is actually a monopoly that is forbidden by the Constitutions. The state TAX CODE is a law for corporations. Go look at the original intent of the Legislature, probably back in the 1870's or somewhere around there. Or look at the "multistate Tax Compact" that is most likely in the TAX CODE and see what is defined as a TAXPAYER. The courts have already said the just because natural person pays rent, or even collects sales tax, you are not a taxpayer. If people don't understand that stuff, they don't need to be blaming some fraternity for the problem because that is ignorance on the part of the one who does not know the difference between a constitutional government and an artificial government. No offense, but your idea is a myth. But, I do agree that it does not matter who is president. It is the people who are to correct the government. Take care.

@Real Talk im across the pond in the uk. we have council tax which all have to pay on property, owned or not.. if you cannot pay for whatever reason they will send a bailiff round so it costs you more money you don't have. it's crazy. a bill (just for example) could be 500 pound but after a bailiff visit it goes up by 100% at least. it then goes up after you get more visits. what is the point of the dream life if it remains just a dream. ya can't win bud.

And the assessment system in Cook county is intentionally confusing, to the point that homeowners usually need to hire specialized attorneys to contest the assessed value. It is a massive scam. Poor people end up paying more than double for property taxes. For example, a senior or person on disability who only has $1,000 income per month will pay, at a minimum, for an old, broken down, tiny little house, $3,000 in property taxes per year. That's 25% of their income!!! Now compare to a house that pays $20,000 in property taxes, but the owner makes $200,000 per year or more. Even though the taxes are higher, that owner would only be paying 10% of their income or less. The poorer you are, the heavier the burden to own a home. This is a mind-bogglingly outdated system that everybody should be up in arms about.

I really did take a turn., out of a bit of anger too and left country. At least if I fail financially here, they wont take away your shelter. DH&I moved our family to Kentucky in 1988. We could not afford to live in NJ there any more. Hi Sean ! Curious norwegian here. What do the local politicians base this tax on ? Level of income ? Property size ? House size ? I live in a coop. The board pays land/property tax out of our rent. But since it's based on the apartment sizes, it's fairy low. We purchased the land in 1988, so it's a freehold. This was done basically to prevent the city council to put more buildings up around us. The coop consists of 13 4 floor, and 4 12 floor buildings on a spacious park area, a 5 minute drive from the city centre. (Oslo is a small city by US standards). Our coop is 65 years old, and roughly half the rent goes towards upgrading of the buildings. Like the new (552) baths we installed in 2007. (All individually designed, within a set prize bracket. So no gold taps, but I can live with that ! )😉 Perhaps our housing model could be a solution to some in the US ? They are typically based upon a percentage of the value of the home, as I said, but different areas use different percentages. This is even happening in rural Indiana. In my town, Lowell, IN. a few homeowners whose homes were nearby or next to businesses, suddenly had their property taxes go so high, yet were unable to sell, they had to move out and demolish their homes to avoid the new taxes. I've seen the same thing in nearby Crown Point, IN. where a marginally successful restaurant at the edge of town, had its property tax go so high, it was not able to find a buyer, so it closed, and tore the building down, and the vacant lot sits there as is several years later.
