Pioneer is coming to Arena, it's on Dec 10th w/ Pioneer Masters. The announcement was about a month ago, it got overshadowed by the UB announcement.

I would imagine that they'll create a new client with a new collection and not let us port over our existing collections. Maybe they'll have us have access to everything in the level 1 power bracket and for every level above there will be a paywall or some kind of subscription model tied to access? Or they'll just limit us to the different Precons or something like that. I personally feel as if they are kind of playing Russian roulette with putting commander online, since it could probably destroy much of their physical market if they would allow for easy access to their entire library of cards.

Something they could do for the commander video game is do a 1 time tie use collection migration type thing from arena. Where it scans all the commander legal cards u have on arena and gives u copies to use on the new game as a way to jump start your collection.

Arena has a problem with collectability only because its rancid economy. They could fix it, they could let us dust things for wild cards like EVERY OTHER DIGITAL CCG but they dont.

The last Magic: Arena survey talks about somethings like this, as different multiplayer formats (Commander and Giant of Two Heads), and they asked about other stuff too, as Modern inclusion too. They included recently direct Decks to buy, they are slowly improving certain things. And before of that, a digital Alchemy card was strangely worded, speaking about the player on your right; it felt like a tease.

In response to your view about collectability, the reason Pokémon is great because it's not paywalled behind Collector packs. Anyone can open a secret rare or alt art of a Pokémon card. I honestly think that is where Magic when downhill in that aspect. The whole "Magic is for everyone" isn't really true because of Collector packs/boxes. It really takes the chase out of buying a normal box of Magic cards. I was playing the game when they first introduced foils to packs as part of Urza's Legacy and the excitement you got when you opened one was great! For my birthdays my dad would buy a box of tourney packs (man I'm old) and a booster box or two for my friends and I to run a little sealed tournament. Afterwords we would hand out extras for prizes. It was great times for everyone to open those things and see someone pull a foil Lin-Sivi or Rishaden Port. Nowadays if I want to find that super chase rare for the set I have to pay out more money for a box that comes with fewer packs and cards than a normal booster box. Now I understand there's more rares and such in a collectors box than a regular, what are they called now, play boosters so there's no real chase. This is where Pokemon shines in that regard. I can just go out and buy a box, an ETB, or anything that has the packs that I'm looking for and have a chance to get those secret rares, alt arts, etc. I don't have to be someone who makes a lot of money to have fun with chasing after something that I want to get and that is what makes the collectability factor for Pokémon so great. Now if only Hasbro/Wizards could get their head out of their own butt and learn from these other companies.

To add on to that, collecting has been, fundamentally, the core tenet of the franchise from the beginning (Gotta catch 'em all!). Nearly every single product or piece of media with the Pokémon name attached to it is either about collecting something or id something that can be collected itself. I think there's few, if any, media franchises that are as intrinsically linked to the very concept of collecting as Pokémon is.

I honestly believe Wotc when they say they can't put EDH on Arena. It would be way more cost effective to just add the format and cards with how expensive it is to acquire cards on Arena than to build a whole new platform and convince people to use that.

As someone who has played arena at least twice a week sonce the beta its f2p model is solid. Ive only spent money once 100 dollars to finish my obash red standard deck and enter a real money tournament.

I think this might be the worst thing to happen for commander. Time will tell but suddenly people will be outside of their nice friendly pods and into an internet environment filled with faceless people who just want to win.

A perfect world solution would be if you could scan cards you own and add them to these services. I understand that is easy to abuse something like that, is probably another reason they dont have something like that. A subscription based model could work all depending on the asking price of the sub. Could offer access to all the current cards and maybe have a window period of waiting to add new cards to the commander client. Then hungry hippo hasbro misses out on a per card price. This shit sucks. I am fortunate to have acquired commander decks while I had disposable income, but i cannot justify spending money on digital cards. Physical cards are barely worth it already, haven't been able to buy new decks or packs for like 3 years. Just saddens me that they want to be money grubby and punish the people that love this game by asking to pay money for digital cards. Id probably get more use out of burning physical cash or cards cuz then that can keep me warm if its cold. Also your cut is fire, barb did a good job.

Ngl this might be cool. But at the same time, from a programmer's perspective, maybe they had a hard time making multiplayer (4 pod) available on Arena. BUT, Arena's engine is Unity3D, which should be good for making a 4pod work. I think they just want more money. Gotta get all those wildcards again on a new game??? Damn...

If they are making a game for commander, it will have all cards. If it has all cards, they should be able to add all formats. If they do, this could become the best platform to play magic on. I want to play modern but arena doesn't have modern and mtgo seems a little sketchy to me with the whole tix system. I've been working myself up to buying into modern on mtgo but with this new announcement I think I need to wait for more information on this new platform.

MTGO really dissuaded me from not being able to chat while playing for free. Not to mention how clunky and unapproachable the UI was. Its was a learning curve I didnt want to learn since I actively couldnt ask for help and trying to learn the UI was getting me hate messages for 'slow play'. Honestly, I dont see why someone would join a game with a message 'new player, still learning' and wish them harm. Was actually a worse experience than trying to get into DOTA or LoL.

@dragonqueenniisan4122 that and the big price tag have been holding me back. If arena had modern I'd happily drop 200 dollars bulk buying gems to then buy mh3. That would very likely get me a bunch of the cards I need and the wildcards needed to finish a few decks. But the arena devs seem to have no interest in getting paper formats onto arena. If players did not maintain a steady stream of asking "pioneer when?" There is no doubt in my mind they would have dropped plans to add it. It seems like they want us all playing alchemy and I don't care about alchemy at all.

@@Hapkins-le6xf Honestly. The best medium for online magic has been TableTopSimulator. You pay the price of that game, and the time to find a community, and you have all the cards you could ever want to try. I still keep my decks relatively budget friendly when possible 200-300 ballpark.

😂 I knew it would happen. Say goodbye to any reason to play paper at stores. If they allow people to use voice chat while playing, it will not fail. 😂 Playing at stores is overrated. So many places have to post signs stating if you stink and don't shower you can't go in the store. 😂

My entire commander group is stepping back from MTG, most of us have been playing since alpha/beta. Most of us moving to D&D and board games, some to Sorcery.

The ideal comander watch plays are elder dragon hijinx or comander at home. Its simple and to the point. I honestly dont like watching gameknights anymore its to overly produced. They could probably make 4 episodes of a good watchable quality. Vs 1 over the top annoying episode
