Summer In The City is a Must! A huge hit and a summertime anthem of the 60s. Another great one by the Spoonful was a movie theme song called Darlin Be Home Soon ,a moderate hit but beautiful, soaring love song with lyrics that take it beyond the usual relationship song fare.

You need to hear "Summer in the City" next. John Sebastian (lead singer & songwriter for LS) played the harmonica on the Doors song "Roadhouse Blues" which you've previously reacted to. Note: Original Parent Trap with Haley Mills was 1961, so well before this song.

John Sebastian appeared at Wookstock '69 with just an acoustic guitar. He was there to attend, and since other acts were stuck in traffic they had no one ready to perform. They asked him to hold the crowd while they got their (literal) act together. He slayed it. You should review him performing at Woodstock.

The Spoonful did this song on TV, I don't remember what show, but they used "TV magic" to make the band members disappear and reappear. The effect looks so fake and lo-tech but it must have looked cool in the 60s. John Sebastian is an incredible musician. He even played harmonica on some tracks by The Doors. I recommend Summer in the City next.

Another great band I grew up with from the 60's. They had so many cool songs such as "Summer In The City", "Jug Band Music", "Nashville Cats", "Rain On The Roof", "Did You Ever Have To Make Up Your Mind?", "Daydream", "You Didn't Have To Be So Nice". John Sebastian was their lead singer & went solo in the 70's. He had a hit with "Welcome Back" from the 1976 TV series "Welcome Back Kotter" (starred a young John Travolta).

John Sebastian wrote "Do You Believe in Magic" in May 1965, he took a three-chord intro from Martha and the Vandellas' "Heat Wave" , sped it up to create the intro to this great song. They were offered the roles for the TV show 'The Monkees but as we should know turned that offer down. They often worked as studio musicians as well. John wrote most if not everything, check out 'Daydream' or 'Summer in The City' next would be my next suggestions. Unrelated but important to me, John was the 1st owner of 'Lucy' a "Goldtop" Les Paul Standard. He sold it to Rick Derringer who eventually sold it to a New York guitar shop where Eric Clapton bought it eventually giving it to George Harrison who named it 'Lucy'. It's the guitar we hear on 'Let My Guitar Gently Weep', it can be seen in the promotional videos for "Revolution" and “The Ballad of John and Yoko”, and the 1970 'Let It Be' documentary. George is playing it during the 3-way guitar solo near the end of Abby Road's 'The End'. Love the story behind that instrument. Cheers

When I was set to head to Finland for a year overseas as an exchange student in 1973, my dear friend sang one of my favorite Loving Spoonful songs at a going away gathering. In the 60's, if you wanted to get airplay, your songs needed to be under three minutes to fit the AM-Hits format. This prompted the creation of FM radio which was originally notorious for playing whole album sides. When I was in school we called FM radio "album stations". The success of the FM format prompted a change in AM format.

John Sebastian (in the glasses) was the founder and core of this group, as others have said. He wrote, arranged, sang lead; played guitar, autoharp and keys. Fellow original member Zal Yanovsky gave the group a distinctive lead guitar sound. I believe he played on all the songs that other folks below have suggested. But he left the group in 1967 and was replaced by guitarist/keyboardist Jerry Yester, the brother of The Association's Jim Yester. You can hear Jerry Yester and Sebastian both playing keys on the group's late hit She's Still a Mystery To Me. Actually, Jerry Yester played piano on this studio version of Do You Believe in Magic. So he was part of the group, even before he was part of the group.

Almost every block/ neighborhood would have a group of 4-5 boys playing guitars , one drum, and singing in the garage. Every region had small record labels looking for songs that could be a hit. Those regions had 1 or 2 big Top 40 stations that every kid under 25 listened to. The big local deejays would play a song and some of them became regional hits and a few became national hits. Of course the deejays got payola( money, drugs, girls) and the record labels ripped the bands off and legally kept the money. The songs needed to de 2:45 or less to get the chance to get on the air and the deejays would often have a time to play local bands. This would increase the listeners and make heroes of the band at HS the next day. This is how so many bands became regional favorites and why so many of the big selling groups of the era would wind up broke. But for entertainment, sit back and listen to about a dozen great bands that were skyrockets and gone very very quickly.

Back in those days a song would need to be 3 minutes or less to have a better chance of getting played on the radio. If a song was originally longer there would sometimes be a radio edit version. Hey Jude by the Beatles was an exception. It was over 7 minutes long. Very unusual for radio in 1968.

The Spoonful, maybe the first "roots" music band, 2 folkies who saw the Beatles & got a rhythm section. John Sebastian wrote & sang most & it's interesting to follow his evolution from roots to singer-songwriter. In order: "Daydream" (a must); "Summer in the City" (#1 Hit!); "Nashville Cats" (arguably the FIRST country rock song - NYC hippies acknowledge "redneck" music). Sensitive singer-songwriter begins: "Darling be Home Soon". Last Big Hit "6 O'Clock". Just about my favorite 60's band - I still try to catch Sebastian if he gig's nearby.
