I will say, it's not about "making it political" because One Piece is ABSOLUTELY political, and any real world analogues that you see or make connections with are 100% intentional by the author. It's supposed to make you mad, disgusted, and skeptical of the people who just look the other way.

I will also add that while One Piece is political, it never preaches or tell you how to think. It's never a definite fact that "the government is this..." or "pirates are that...", because even within each group of people, there's moral conflict between person-to-person. What makes politics in One Piece work is that while you can draw all these connections to real life events, the series is still telling its own story and the audience can choose for themselves whether to look into the political intrigue of the series or just be entertained as a fictional story set in a fictional world.

So fun little fact that blew my mind when I first heard it. All of the new Supernova characters that we were first introduced in episode 392 were made completely on the spot. Basically, Oda's editor told him to add more new characters to make the arc more interesting and he created all of them right there and then.

One Piece will go political all on its own, very intentionally, and that's one reason why we love it so much. It has something to say. I hope you're all right! These are some heavy episodes indeed. Small note, but Shakky doesn't say outright that Rayleigh is her husband, she uses an expression that wives CAN use about their husbands, but can also be used for someone you're living together with, or someone belonging to your family. A literal translation would be "person of my house". It's ambiguous.

I wanna say I’m right at the beginning of the video where Zoro gets the wrong number for the grove where the Sunny is, but the way going to Grove 1 works out for him is so amazingly written. I love that anything Luffy doesn’t understand is a “mystery” thing. Also, yeah, One Piece has its fun and bright style, but it also doesn’t shy away from subject matter like racism, slavery, torture, and more. It’s really beautifully done, and the show always talks about these things in the context of the Straw Hats fighting against it. It sends all the right messages with the One Piece flair.

Reaching this arc feels very familiar to me IRL. Growing up as a kid you don't know anything about the darkness of the world (tho I'm sure it would be different growing up in a black family, or any minority family depending where you live). You go to school and experience bullying, hear bits and bobs about Racism, but you kinda don't take it seriously because you don't know how bad it really is. At least here in Australia (maybe I should have lead with that), there was rarely any racism going on at all where I lived, even tho I went to a multicultural school that was like half Greek. You grow older and over time come to realize just how fucked things are and how even more fucked they used to be. My first encounter with Racism, tho I didn't know what Racism was at the time, was when I was 10 years old, when an African refugee came to my school and was in my class. I had no idea what that meant. The weird thing was, in retrospect, that the only person who was racist to him was another black kid who was also African but was raised here. They got into a fight once and kept calling each other the N word. None of us kids knew what that meant back then. Other than that, no one ever treated him differently for looking different or whatever. He was pretty fucked up tho. I have no idea what he had gone through before coming here, but he was quick to get violent if there were any dramas. I hope he's doing well now Reaching this arc in One Piece feels like that. It's eye opening. Our crew is now learning of the world's true darkness, and the way this series deals with it is why it is my favourite series ever. It runs deep, but never feels like it's trying to tell you what to think. Even in the latest chapters we are learning more about it. This is one of my favourite arcs.

I know you're way beyond this but I went back to watch these because I loved your Marineford reactions. I don't know how they do it in the English version since everybody I hear says it differently in English, but I think the Japanese way is easier. It's pronounced "Sha-BON-dy" in Japanese, because it's based on シャボン玉 (shabondama), which means "soap bubble." The spelling "Sabaody" is based on a real place somewhere I think? (I vaguely recall hearing that but I can't remember where.)
