I miss the simpler time, when you just had to pop in the game CD and you could play the game as much as you want, even if you didn’t have internet. Now, it’s become so invasive that even a normal singleplayer game can require you internet access for some reason. These decisions aren’t good for the companies doing it in the long run - because it’ll fuel hatred and even bigger demand for piracy, which would bring them even less money than if they’d invest in the logistics for physical disk media production of their games.

Refund policies are highly frustrating compared to physical media. I bought a game on steam a couple months ago, forgot about and and never played it. I noticed it in my library last week, and said "Aw heck, I haven't played this and I probably won't in the future" so I decided to try and refund it. Even with not even a second of playtime, they denied my refund because it had been more than 14 days, which seems like a small window. What if I bought the game on sale, didn't get a chance to play it and by the by time I realized the game was a pile of hot garbage, it'd be too late for a refund? It's just stupid, because if it was physical media I'd at least be able to sell it and get *something* back. Now I'm just stuck with a game I have no intentions of playing. With digital media, there's no way of selling even old games you don't play anymore.

I think this issue runs far deeper than just games, with the mindset of young people today. Most of us (and those I work with) don't really have conscious awareness of digital privacy or data collection as a primary concern. Could be because almost every service they use inundates the same license agreement to them, and just shuts them out otherwise, or just information overload apathy. In other words, the freedom has been taken for granted, while slowly being stripped away, as the less conscious the problem appears. Evil spreading as good people do nothing.

"Licensed, not sold" actually means that you can't sell copies of your copy, it doesn't mean that you don't own your copy. Legally talking, we do own the games bought digitally, but in practice most of the time we have to use workaround methods to actually own them like circumventing or removing DRM by using a cracked executable (Steamless for the Steam's case although that's developer's choice to use SteamStub since there some games that do not use it, GOG sells DRM-free copies so there's nothing to crack) and jailbreaking the consoles to be able to run backup copies (doesn't apply to Xbox One and Series since it'll likely never be cracked). As for selling and lending, how do you sell/lend a "used game copy" if the offer is infinite?
@BlueRaptorNightFury
@BlueRaptorNightFury Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I remember watching Ross' video on why he believes games as a service are fraud (The same guy who did Freeman's mind), he brought up a user by the name of Delicieuxz on the Linus Tech Tips forum that pretty much explained and mentioned how the "You don't own the games you bought" is a myth and/or corporate propaganda. This whole saying may have worsened cause many AAA companies would rather make a product that is live-service always-online only, instead of a traditional game, there for it's not really a owned game since it'd get shut down without warning sometimes since the product is more of a provided service than a game. Games like Black Ops 2, GTA V, Halo (all Bungie). These are traditional games, but then you have Fortnite, the newer Call of Dutys (Maybe?), Halo Infinite. These are more of Live-service games cause they are built around a service-model rather than a standard game model. It can be understandable that people would feel like they don't own anything when so much of gaming now-a-days is predicting that the next big game coming out is just another Live-service game with a unknown death-timer. At least games like Baulder's Gate 3 keeps some hope in the gaming market. But sadly we'd need more games with the same quality and standards.

It really is going to suck for consumers if every triple A game in 2030 is going to be over 100, there’s a limit, for games ok, and I think that limit should stop with Red Dead Redemption 2’s price, 60, dollars. 5. Yeah, I agree for once with this 2:58 Once, I bought South Park: The Fractured but whole, which I played on my friend’ computer which wasn’t used for gaming computers, and it really wasn’t working well, but unfortunately, because I played it for more than an hour or two, I couldn’t return it, which was so unpleasant and awful cause I had to play it in a lower graphics mode or else the game would constantly crash, and it crashed a lot of times! Yeah, there should definitely be a change in the refund system. Great work as always Dark Space/ Ocean!

Nothing about your experiences are invalid, but the second point you listed is a 'problem' with the customizability of a computer. Simply put, your computer did not have the strength. You are not the one at fault here in my opinion, I believe platforms should be more open to the layman about the power of their rig. But what you describe is a problem with your computer; too little power. Increased via a better GPU. there was nothing more that could really be realistically done on Bethesda's part besides cutting down the graphics and scope of the game. That's just how it is in the space.

I was going to say the same The US never does anything cause it’s got it hands deep in the lobbyers’ pockets, but the EU does often does fix and protect consumers from greedy companies, and if the EU passes laws fixing these issues, these companies might just use the same standards also in the US as it ends up being cheaper, or Americans will look at the EU, see it fixed the problem, and put pressure on politicians to the same… The rest of the world… well, if the EU & US do something, they tend to follow, or it ends up being uneconomical to use 2 different standards so the companies just apply the EU & US standards to the rest of the world

I don't know what it's like in other countries but weirdly in Australia it's far cheaper to buy games at a store on disc then on the Microsoft/Playstation store. New games are usually between 90-110 AUD in a physical store while online they are currently 125 AUD which is insane considering it is far cheaper to not have to produce and distribute physical discs.

First of all, these animations are impressive. I don't know how long these videos take, but that's beautiful. If you're of a certain age, you probably saw all of this coming 20+ years ago when they started selling discs with broken or outright missing games that required online access to download, and I wasn't about to pay the console manufacturers money to have online access that should have been free since I was already paying for my own internet service. To this day, I've never finished that Lego Star Wars game I have for the OG XBox because it had a game breaking bug that I can't download or apply a patch for. I stopped buying consoles and thus their games at that point and they can go fornicate themselves.

Tbh, Steam's refund policy never bothered me much. I've bought, tried, and refunded many games and they always do as long as it's within their criteria. I do wish you had more than 2 weeks but I can understand how they don't want people taking advantage and finishing a game and then refunding or refunding a long time down the line so they force a deadline. Because as opposed to a brick and mortar store, it takes no effort to return something digitally. That's the whole system around rebates for instance, you can rely more on the money the more inconvenient it is for the consumer to get it back. Playstation's is terrible bc you can't even test the game. A game doesn't have to be "broken" to still be terrible or have had false advertising. Not letting you even test the product is pretty scummy.

And I'm very afraid with the new terms of service, I'll get banned for anything. Who knows, they could ban me for a message I sent years ago that's now deemed offensive and I would lost 1000's of dollars worth of games plus 8000+ trophies. I've now gone back to physical, I do have hundreds of ps3 games and a couple dozen ps4, and a few ps5. I'm more likely to buy physical now and in most cases... it's actually cheaper. As an owner of physical games (or what I have left since childhood), I “own” a huge library of games on GamePass and Steam but there are games that I love the most and would play again that I would go far to get physical like Jedi Survivor or Halo MCC because if I ever get disconnected or the Internet shuts down, I can still play those games because I own the physical rights. I won't be surprised if the "solution" for all of this will eventually be an "final state ownership edition" for select titles that you can buy for 150 dollars at the end of the game's lifecycle (all fixes, updates and DLC delivered) that has the disc or set of discs that actually have the full game on it. Though not sure if they'd give it out for such an "affordable" price. ...and the saddest thing is, I'd probably even have to take the bait with all my favorite games just so I can rely that I have the actual full thing ready to play whenever.

This is all common knowledge since the digital games era of ps3 and xbox 360. We always knew buy games physical, if its only digital, then have an account just for the purchase of digital games, and use your multiplayer account on the same console so your purchasing account does not suffer if your playing account gets banned. And store backups of digital games on extended HDDs. This alone solves most of the concerns in this video. Yeah digital still sucks, but emulators also exist for older titles that disappear. There's always an answer to all these issues.

Retro gaming is another world entirely with scalpers and all. Not enough space in some cases, big games are taking +100GB for the most part. And besides, corporations are the pne that can tell you if you want to play a physical game. The disc of the game you insert can be tied to an update and may not work with time. It's also really odd that buying physical is cheaper than digital. I bought my PS5 as the disc version exclusively because I knew that I will end up saving money when not being restricted to only buying from the Playstation Store, but instead can find physical deals cheaper because it opens up so many different options where to buy from, all of them having their sales and campaigns separately. I've eaaasily already made back the difference for having paid more for the disc version than the digital only PS5 by even finding brand new PS5 games that sell with 59 euros on release day in physical stores, instead of buying them with 69 or 79 euros on PSN store. Sad if we lose that competitiveness in price and digital console marketplaces will have a monopoly to those prices.

People need to do some actual damn research We have NEVER owned games, back when CDs first became common place a ruling was heald that deemed buyung a CD didnt mean you owned the song, you owned the CD containing the song, the song itself was still property of the music label, thia meant you couldnt use the song in your own music, or rip it and burn it This also got applied to video games Why is this important Well this means that owning a game physically is no more or leas ownership, you hold no legal right over the data on the disc, its the comapny who owns that datas right to say what you can and can not do with a physical game you own, sure you can do whatever you want to the disc itself, but you can not touch the data on it This means things like game modding and playing backed up copies are NOT legally protected That doesnt sound like ownership to me And IMO if we never owned games in the first place, IDC about owning them even less
