After he left Sega, Ecco’s creator, Ed Annuzita wanted to create a spiritual successor called Big Blue, but failed to get the proper funds on kickstarter. I guess there’s an audience for this kind of game somewhere but whether or not it’s wide remains to be seen.

This is one of the most batshit games in terms of the weirdest collaborations, cuz you got narration by Tom Baker of DOCTOR WHO FAME, and a story written by David Brin, a sci-fi author of the Uplift series which is ENTIRELY ABOUT DOLPHINS BECOMING ASTRONAUTS. I love this game exists.

The lore behind the Ecco games is quite sick, not gonna lie, its something i really liked about this 16-bit era games and how bonkers their plots were.

The first Ecco game is especially insane just based off how it quickly it goes from 0 to 100. First you're just swimming around looking for your lost pod and the next thing you know, you're in a John C. Lilly fever dream.

A shame Matt barely scratched the surface of this game, it goes to some really breathtaking and sometimes terrifying places once you get past the beginning sections, especially the underwater machinery.
@shadow1w2 Жыл бұрын
Yeah it's a shame, game starts slow but works into some great places. My favorite being the sky tunnels but that underwater machine had some horror vibes. Hope Matt can give it a second go, maybe the original Dreamcast version with a VGA adapter/emulation.

Ecco the Dolphin was an odd duck when it came out on the genesis back in the day. It absolutely nails what kind of game its trying to be, but it is definitely one of those "its not for everyone" kind of games. Surprisingly challenging and deep lore too.

Funny how you mention being the bully dolphin. Due to time travel shenanigans dolphins take over the oceans in one timeline later in the game. Then in another timeline you have to infiltrate different dolphin clans to progress.

You're thinking of Stephen Fry. He also voiced the Guide's entries in the movie. Apparently, the narrator here is someone named Tom Baker, who apparently played Doctor Who, so the resemblance is likely due to both of them being British.

This is a stupidly long game I HAD to GameFAQs my way through on DC. And even then I only made it half way. It's insanely complicated and has extremely poor guidance on what you need to do to clear it's puzzles. All that said, I do hold it in high regard for how pretty and soothing it was for the time. The only reason I didn't finish it was it triggered a deep seeded fear of sharks and put me on edge the entire time. The moment I finally encountered a fully invisible shark, I put it down at level 14 of 27....

Okay, but no joke, "Hanging Waters" is an amazingly imaginative Ecco: Defender of the Future level, only hampered by the Dreamcast and PS2's poor draw distance making everything just fade into view when it was close. If they did an HD remaster/remake/sequel/etc., that could extend the distance further, it would be truly awe-inspiring. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iIfCloOJjLd7pNU

I could beat the game gear game Tides of Time (?) but it took tons of deaths from getting lost as hell. Games REALLY need a map. Overall i don't love these games tbh. it was NEVER clear even beating the game if the sonar or ramming did damage or was suposed to do damage or was it hit/hurt box issues? I dunno, these games best feature was always the opening level where you can jump around before the story kicks in.
