The Dakar desert rally is one of the most difficult rally raid events in the world. The event covers thousands of miles and is open to rally cars, trucks, and bikes. The 2024 Dakar event is currently in progress, but in this video, we’re taking it back to 1980. Jean Francois Piot (a successful WRC rally driver himself) is the mastermind credited with one of the most ambitious Dakar efforts in history: fielding a team of Vespa P200e scooters to run the event! What challenges did the riders face, and did they finish? We answer both of those questions in this video!

I can't remember all of the details offhand but a well known advocate of scooters back in the 60s rode an almost unmodified scooter in the Scottish 6days trial, and I believe he finished, there is a video available on youtube about it.

As an owner of one.... I could only imagine the hell they went through! About Sand and small tyres? It's not happening! It'll be like riding on oobleck! Constantly Sinking and steering would be shitty! I mean Real shitty!

A Honda Cub would have been a better choice: bigger wheels, higher speed, and durability. If you haven't already done a video, the Lada Niva's participation in the Dakar Rally during the 1980s was unexpected both for its entry (as a Soviet made vehicle) and its success (several top 5 finishes).
