Mapo, if you like Yakuza, you really need to play Shenmue 1 and 2 down the line some day as the characters, story and immersive living world would really suit your methodical slow approach, taking your time and soaking up all the little details everywhere and the game story even starts during the Christmas period so there you go.

Yeah, these games are excellent but extensive and not every element is great. Take your time, enjoy what it does, but don't force yourself when you aren't feeling it.

Agreed, these games are definitely something to 'experience' rather than being perfect games. There's some parts and activities that're not great, and there are definitely things that get well-deserved ctiticsm. To me that's part of their charm, they're loved because of their flaws almost as much as despite them.

I recently finished all 6 games on Gamepass and now play Like a dragon. What I did was play 0 - Kiwami 2 on hard and do lots of sidestuff. But then I rushed through the main stories of 3-5 on easy for the main story. I feel like I have seen enough of the wacky sidestuff at this point and the remasters are good, but didn't age...that great. Combat is pretty bad. And since you can't change difficulty there playing them on hard forces you to do much of the sidestuff. Especially 5 is absurdly long. Then for 6 I switched to hard again and did somewhat more of the sidestuff, since 6 was very modern again. Looking back I think I would have started the easy run on Kiwami 2.

This game is so fun to get lost in, my only advice for this one is to let yourself get lost and have fun with side content, this game is very much as much about having fun doing random shenanigans as it is the story. Excited for this one!

Glad to see you playing this, man! Gonna be honest here, dont listen to the people that say "dont play this one first". So while "release order-wise" this came out much later, in an effort to push the series to bigger audiences, RGG made this game FOR it to be played first by new fans as a new starting point for the series, despite the next game "Kiwami" being a remake of the original first game. YES, this game has references, easter eggs, and etc for later games, but for old fans they're nice call backs, for new fans, they're great foreshadowing. So after this game, going in release order will be great! I hope you have a TON of fun, this series means a lot to me too and as someone who's FINALLY almost done catching up now (at Y7), I KNOW you're gonna have a great time, don't be afraid to goof off with substories and minigames! 🙏🏽❤

Seconding this. I 100% understand the release-order route's beauty, and it's something I'd demand for series like MGS... but Yakuza is a biiit different. The only "uhm, actually...!" thing I'd say about the Yakuza franchise would be playing the original PS1-2 Yakuza games (1-2) instead of the neutered and rushed Kiwameh 1-2 "remakes".

It doesn't make sense to play the originals if you're playing 0 first. At that point just play the Kiwamis, that are not only remakes, but basically sequels to 0

I always find it funny how this game has so many styles of cutscenes, or just talking. You've got the slide-show, which doesn't happen super often, well directed cutscenes akin to a movie, characters talking to each other with voices and then basically all the side quests don't have voices other than maybe a few generic voice-lines or sounds. It's a lot to keep track of but you'll definitely get to voice a lot in this game, thank God then that all the dialogue in this game is amazingly well written and hilarious too.

Haven't played Yakuza games myself before, so this will be a great introduction to the franchise. Glad for fans that were waiting for this. So far really liking the voice acting, all characters sound very natural. And music is great.

Will say MANY characters in this game specifically are modelled after their VAs which is so cool. Kuze specifically is played by Hitoshi Ozawa, an AMAZING actor whos also a super cool kind goofy guy, he's a long time yakuza actor across movies and tv so he was perfect for this role fr

One really great thing about the series is how familiar you get with the locations over time. Eventually you load up a new entry in the series for the first time, go past the intro and head through two back alleys to your favorite ramen shop right away because you're so familiar with the streets of Kamurocho, Sotenbori and Isezaki Ijincho that it's like you actually grew up there.

about what you said in the beginning regarding the entry point for the series, I think 0/Kiwami/Kiwami 2 is the most concise way to experience the story, since 0 adds a lot to the characters and (kinda spoilers? idk) Yakuza 1's story gets expanded a bit on Kiwami so it helps the story to make more sense but OG Yakuza 1 and 2 are so different from the rest of the series, its so interesting and so charming, watching how the games changes and gets improved upon within each entry instead of playing 2 games in an engine, then the next is in a better, more polished engine, then the next one is one of the oldest, most clunkiest engines in the franchise still, I highly recommend to play the OG games even after playing the remakes, they're so different and are so worth the time and effort!

In terms of it being cinematic, Yakuza 6 had a cutscene so long that my wireless controller disconnected. These games have soap opera levels of drama in their main story and I adore them for it! Hope you enjoy 0, it's one of my faves.

Okay I've played this game three times...and I never stopped to check the magazine racks. It's amazing you can do that! That's definitely one of the things I massively appreciate about Mapo, paying so much attention to details and having the patience to go along with it. When I play games, I tend to overlook/ignore stuff like this, which is certainly not something I'm proud of, but it's tough to get rid of that mindset.
