Those little Briggs classic engines are so reliable, about all they ever need is the occasional carb diaphragm. Wish they still made these!
@WJCTechyman
@WJCTechyman 2 ай бұрын
I don't, I never liked the carburetor design on these being plastic, needing a primer as well as the use of a rubber diaphragm fuel pump instead of gravity feed and the ease of serviceability is the reason I have Honda and Kohler engines. The Hondas (GX and Kohlers, this case Command Pro) last forever and are relatively easy and simple to service and incredibly reliable, evidenced from my 43+ year old Honda flathead powered tiller and snow throwers. They're also much quieter and smoother to boot. So, in order to change that diaphragm requires the removal of two bolts, but Briggs didn't make the head size the same, one is a longer 1/2" headed bolt and, depending on the year of the engine, another smaller 3/8 or 7/16" head. Also to remove, there's usually a spacer between the fuel tank and the block. Why couldn't Briggs just build that spacer into either the block or the tank? Next, you pull the fuel assembly off. Keeping an eye on the O-ring and retainer and putting them back into the carburetor. Then, to replace the diaphragm, you have to undo six fasteners. The slot head for the filter, then five additional fasteners with Phillips heads. You take the carburetor off of the tank, and remove the diaphragm and gasket. Then you have to clean off the remaining gasket material that may be stuck to both the tank and the plastic carb. Make sure while doing all of this you don't lose the spring or the screens. Already there are more steps than it takes to remove the fuel system from the Honda. The Honda GX only has three fasteners to remove: Two 10 mm headed nuts and a 10 mm headed bolt. Pull the air filter off in one assembly, carefully remove the carb disconnecting the two linkages and the tension spring. Undo the 10 mm bolt on the bottom of the carb to access the float, needle and main fuel jet. To get to the pilot jet on the top of the carb, take a Philips headed screw driver and pull the idle set screw, gently pry up on the plastic of that jet. All metal construction, no chance of warping. Removing the recoil starter on the Honda is just as easy, depending on the age and series of engine, it's three 8 or 10 mm fasteners that hold the recoil to the blower housing. Briggs flathead? It also depends on the series of engine: Quantum or Classic/Quattro. Sometimes it's the removal of layers of things, typically vanity plastic, fuel tank and the blower shroud with again, an assortment of fasteners. It also depends on the series of engine: Quantum or Classic/Quattro. You can probably see somewhat why I don't like Briggs engines. When they work, they work very well but when they don't (this happens quite a bit with me and I have owned Honda, Honda clones, Tecumseh, Kohler, Suzuki, Briggs and for a brief time, one temperamental Kawasaki) it can become a nightmare and time wasted.

@@WJCTechyman yes, I’ve had / have / serviced all of those engines and they all have their strong points, but the simplicity and incredible reliability of these inexpensive little engines is just something else. I’ve had sooo many of these come in after being relentlessly abused, and yet with a little bit of service they come right back to life (in many cases they simply start right up and run fine). The simple carbs are not at all finicky and if the tank mating surface is slightly warped it can be brought back to level very easily (rarely happens IME). These were great engines for simple, low power demand applications. Every Honda GX I ever had on the many HR214 variants I’ve had over the years burned oil like a mosquito fogger, Kohler equivalents like the XT675 have half a dozen different carb setups each with their own problems, Chinese knockoffs like the Loncin engines are very good (but next to impossible to source internal parts for). Every Kawasaki engine I’ve ever had on JX75 style walk behinds has been stellar.

How much sense a dedicated edger largely depends on your property/situation. I have a 100'x150' corner lot with sidewalk along 2 sides plus another 50' or so running from the driveway to the house, so that works out to around 600' linear feet to edge (doing both sides of the sidewalk) or 850' if I do the curb as well. Trying to do that with a trimmer results in having to re-spool the head 2 or 3 times and very sore arms by the time I'm done, so a dedicated edger is a must for me. However if I had a lot less sidewalk to deal with I'd also just use a trimmer.

Yeah, I remember those old Briggs flatheads had smoking problems when I worked on them in the past. It's mostly overfilling with oil or piston ring issues. Easy to fix if you have the time to take apart the whole engine. The question you asked at the end, I would use a straight shaft string trimmer to edge with. Much easier to do than an actual edger, IMO. Edger blades can catch and hit concrete or asphalt or whatever you're edging against. If you're not careful, the blade can be badly damaged with prolonged use, or possibly bending the crankshaft if a catastrophic failure was to happen.

The valve clearance will actually decrease as the engine ages with more hours it might do because the valve seats recede with use. I had to grind the valve stem end of my 3 horsepower Briggs and Stratton flathead engine because the valve stem end to tappet clearance was too tight. I did grind it down a tad too much but what else can I do? The engine ran great when I used the mower last. I would use the engine on a lawnmower which either has no engine on it or to replace a totally blown up engine,a line trimmer is more convenient & easier to use than an edger therefore I have no need for an edger either !

I'm guessing that bad gas or previous oil over fill caused a lot of carbon on the exhaust valve which now needs cleaning and re-lapping. If it was my edger, I would be pulling the head off and insuring the exhaust valve was sealing properly. Once cleaned, there should be no more smoke on start up. Yes, this would require a new head gasket and possibly open up a can of worms - I doubt it though as I don't think that engine has done a lot of work.

hehheh, chocolate cake! That's up there with Hand Tool Rescues "forbidden Nutella" grease or as I refer to the recovered water in my Rainbow after doing a carpet extraction as "chocolate milk" I would think for a flathead el-cheapo Briggs anything over 100 isn't bad as they have, what? 5:1 or maximum 6:1 compression? My Honda GX and Kohler Command Pro machines have something like 8:1 or 9:1. The machine's an edger as well so you don't necessarily need a lot of compression to spin a 7" blade engaging in soil, especially if my 25cc Echo can edge with that size. I wouldn't bother with it due to being my least favourite engine brand and model. It had to change the engine over because they have more emissions than Honda engines do from the same time period. Briggs should have been making overhead valve small general-purpose engines since at least the time Honda started making only its GX line back in the mid-1980s. Some of Briggs' early engines were overhead valve, but why it decided to make only flathead engines baffles me. This is an example of an engine that people say have worse pollution than cars do for the same amount of time running. Only in the last 10-15 years have other manufacturers caught up to using OHV engines on power equipment (I guess it also helps that Honda's patent became public domain and that's why we see every gas powered piece of equipment brand new having an overhead valve engine bolted to them).

Briggs doesn't even have a compression spec for the old flat heads ,anything above sixty was fine.also check the valve clearance at top dead just past the compression bump or the readings will be off and on those edgers they get stored with thr wheel down and fill the cylinder with oil. the spray I use does not take off the rust, only the oily and dirty stuff.

Just a shot.... Could you ensure the cover you took off (crankcase breather) to check the valve clearances is clean? There is an opening to the crankcase where the springs are located to allow crankcase gases to pass thru the breather and back into the intake manifold. The breather has a filter inside that can clog with oil sludge. they can be taken apart and cleaned by prying the crimp open. I know it time consuming but for a DIY'er I saved my neighbor's mower from oil fogging the neighborhood.
