When CFH was released, Pantera was still doing small club shows and lots of them. Got to see them in a little dive called the Backroom in Austin 4 times. The raw power and energy in a small place was so far beyond anything any other band had done previously. I guess it was the second time I caught them there - Phil was doing his thing. Suddenly he stopped the band and called out a punk skin head “you fuckin’ spit on me again and I’m gonna kick your ass... 1, 2, 3, go”. Back to jamming. Suddenly he throws down his mic, gets on his knees, and starts pounding this guys face. The fans behind the guy shoved him forward so Phil could reach! It was epic. Then security got hold of the guy and finished him off. Another time, their sound board went down so everyone went to the other side of the bar which was a game room. A George Forman fight was on the big screen. Had the pleasure of sharing the tables and drinking a few pitchers with Phil and some of their roadies. Saw them in a rock dance hall in San Antonio another time. Place was packed with metal heads. The place had two dance floors that had wooden rails around them and the walls were covered in neon signs. When Pantera erupted, the wooden rails were torn out and passed above the pit and thrown out of the way against the walls. By the time it was over there were no rails or neon signs left in the place. Don’t think that club ever had another metal show. About that time, they had out grown the small places and were doing arenas and outdoor venues. Saw them at the Starplex in Dallas with White Zombie. Saw them at Southpark Meadows in Austin with Sepultura. I loved the intensity of the small places. That was about the end of my Pantera show days. Arenas just weren’t the same. Thanks for letting me relive those times. I feel so blessed that I was there to see this genre in it’s infancy!

I fucking skipped out on a show in Amarillo Tx. Because this chick I was trying to get with just happened to hit me up that night and wanted to party. I invited her to the show but she didn't want to go so I abandoned my mission. I thought that I would have another chance to see them as I was a nomadic traveler and was always in an area where bands often played. I didn't get my chance as they broke up, then Dime was murdered and I was pissed. I had the chance to go hang out at their strip club in Dallas when I was a runner for a Mexican car tell but this trip I ended up picking up an elderly woman and didn't feel right bringing a 75 yr old Hispanic woman who just spent two days in the trunk of a Le Sabre in a hot desert to a strip club. all too often people forget that when pantera was around, they single-handedly made every other band around them look like complete pussies, because they were. pantera had an iron-clad tight rhythm section, not to mention dimebags once-in-a-lifetime guitar innovation, add that on top of phil's no-nonsense vocal writings and you have the most dominant american metal band of all time.

At the core of Pantera were the Abbott brothers. Vinnie Paul (drums) and Darrell (guitar) (AKA - Dimebag Darrell, Dime, Brother Dime). They were also well known in Dallas for their strip club. Pantera ran its course and they formed Damage Plan. The new band was on tour in Columbus, OH, playing at the Alrosa Villa on Dec 8, 2004 when a person in the audience (we don't say the names of killers - their names are to be lost to history!) opened fire killing four people - Dime and his body guard (my friend) Jeff (Mayhem) Thompson, another fan, and an employee of the club. Welcome to Pantera! Groove metal just pops more than other metal to me...and they created it. They are from Dallas and are legends here. I remember going to a Pantera concert at Reunion Arena, the old arena that the Mavs and Stars played in. The Mavs had played earlier that night so the wood floor was still down and they put chairs on top. Really dumb move. Even worse, the Stars were playing the next day so there was ice under the wood. People were throwing chairs and pulling up wood sections to slide around on the ice. Some people were body surfing across the crowd on the boards. It was wild...and the police had to shut it down. Then when the Stars won the Stanley Cup in 1999, Pantera made a battle song for them. I went to the parade through downtown Dallas after they won the championship and Pantera came through on a float with huge loud speakers playing the song live. They got a bigger reaction than the hockey team...lol.

Pantera concerts are/were some of the most brutal badges of honor you can earn. If you didn't leave with something bruised, strained, dislocated, cracked, or even broken, did you even experience them right? Stage diving is a BLAST. I used to do it when I went to shows - the thought of injury was never a thought. Also you NEVER stage dive unless the pit is FULL. A few times some moron tried to stage dive with a few people in the pit and they scattered like roaches so the guy hit the floor spread eagle, yes he had to be carried out. Medical bills - drugs - we were too poor for that kind of shit. Booze and pot were the biggest thing, but more than a few people were like me and didn't drink or do drugs, it was called Straight Edge. Speaking of which - check out Minor Threat's Straight Edge.

Oh and one time stage diving did go bad - I got vaulted off the stage into the crowd, and I had no shirt on and was dripping with sweat. My pals who tried to catch me slipped and my face slipped and scrapped the concrete. The side of my face got torn up - got a big friction scab from it that took over a month to heal. People said it looked sick, but I thought it look kool as fuck. A few times I told people I thought it looked so kool that once it healed up I was going to take a belt sander and do it again.

fun enough Pantera was the same in the studio as they were on stage. jumping around and head banging they were so into the music. Plus that way they are sure they can play it exactly the same live when they will move.

Back in the day, I was in the 121st Air Refueling Wing garrisoned at Rickenbacker Air Base up near Columbus, OH. Me and some guys headed out to see Pantera at Alrosa Villa the night Dimebag was shot by that crazy bastard. I still have dreams about that shit to this day.

pantera sounds scary but their fanbase is so fucking cool and they put on one hell of a live show. I'm not a giant fan but i saw them live a few years back and it was so much fun.

Pantera was one of the last great metal bands, they were a garage band gone rogue. Do yourself a favor and find the video "Pantera's Vulgar Videos Volume 3". It's a full length documentary, so I'm sure you wouldn't react to it, but it is SOOOO FUCKING GREAT! Great concert footage, great back stage, great tour footage, and a SHITLOAD of drinking.

One thing to watch out for when you were at a Pantera show was getting kicked in the head by steel toed boots! I'm positive that's why it takes me longer than others to figure things out! Much love from California ❤

I'd like to ask if you've heard "Avoid The Light"? It's much later in their career and it's much different . but I think it really upholds some of the more unorthodox style that Dimebag was trying to explore because he loved harmonic squeals... If you could please try it, I'd be very happy. You're reactions have never been disappointing and if you try this song. I think you'd like it.

Funny you said "Swanton Bombing into the crowd" This was Rob Van Dam's old theme song. Best part of that song was the singer basically saying "Sure you can talk shit behind my back to our friends, but they'd relay what you said back to me and we think you're a tool"

That’s why going to a metal/rock show and being in the front area you have to be ready for stage diving and mosh pits , if not then stay to the back
