Phil Anselmo was a specimen back then. Vocally, athletically; the real f'ing deal! That whole damn band were incredible. They invented a whole new sound and aesthetic from the ashes of thrash and glam metal - and made it stick at a time when only grunge bands made it. Hard as you like, but with rhythm and groove a hip hop DJ would be proud of and genuine medoly beneath the hard edge. The Abbott brothers, virtuoso sons of a country musician, added more than their fair share to the magic that made Pantera special. And yes! @SoiledWig4 жыл бұрын
As a couple other commenters noted, the squeals Dime gets are called pinch harmonics. They're accomplished by holding the pick really close to the end, like "choking up" on it, and letting a teensy part of your finger touch the string simultaneously with the pick. That creates a node way up there near the end of the string (as opposed to a natural harmonic, done by hitting a natural node point closer to the center of the string, say, at the 12th, 7th, or 5th fret). It really helps to have distortion to make them sound out, but it's also possible to do it on a nylon string classical, with your bare thumb and nail.
@vitalygolub97164 жыл бұрын

I think he’s using a whammy pitch shifter it was one of the pedals he used a lot
@RMZrider124 жыл бұрын
Dime did use pinch harmonics sometimes, but his signature squeal is not. It was his own variation of a divebomb. He would dump the whammy bar then tap a harmonic (usually 5th fret on G) the harmonic mixed with distortion would start a squeal. He then would realese the whammy bar and push it the opposite way. As the string tension went back up, so would the pitch of the squeal.
@johnwirk4 жыл бұрын
@@RMZrider12 yea, the short riffs like the ending with the small bends in them are pinch where his long squeals are created up on the neck. He was very talented. Doing those types of squeals allows the addition of harmonics when a certain pattern of alternate picking doesnt permit it like when you "up pick" its much harder to pinch harmonic if possible at all.

Darrel (The guitarist) is one of the few out there that when you saw them play in concert, his playing and solos were NOTE FOR NOTE PERFECT. Could close your eyes and swear you were listening to a studio recording.

Any type of metal Requires an extreme amount of talent! I’m glad someone’s young as you can appreciate metal from the 80s 90s. I remember Pantera and Skid Row touring together. they even played a softball game together it was awesome! The pants vs skids 😄

6:04 You have something in common with Dimebag Darrell! His favorite number, his lucky number, was 333 - "Dime Time" as he called it. He put it on a lot of his guitars, and he used the "3" hand sign frequently (as seen in 5:16). It apparently started when he and a friend were talking about how it was okay to dig into your ears in public (a hole in your body), but it wasn't okay to dig into any other hole in public. His friend mentioned that most ears on cartoon characters look like 3's, and in true Dime fashion, he started coming up to people touching their ears and saying "3!" to them just to see the confused reaction they would give. He also noticed that he and his lifelong girlfriend Rita were both born in '66, double-33, and they would turn 33 in '99, triple-33. After he died, his brother Vinnie said he would wake up in the middle of the night every night for years, look at the clock, and it would be 3:33am. He would glance at the clock every afternoon too, and he always seemed to catch it at 3:33pm. He would be feeling down, and maybe while driving down the road he would see a house or street sign that read 333. He took it as a sign that Dime was still with him, reminding him he's still there. Rita says she sees the same things, and others who knew and loved him do as well.

R.I.P. Dimebag. Makes me weep every time I hear a solo. I remember the day I heard the news. I walked in, and the TV's were on in the store and the news popped off with the news... I just stood there watching the TV and my bosses and co-workers thought I was crazy...

@mattrutkowski53054 жыл бұрын
8:21 You do “that” (pinch harmonics) by picking a note with your thumb and pick hitting the string at the same time. The pick/thumb attack must land at a specific point along the string’s length and occur simultaneously (as if you’re “pinching” the string between plectrum and thumb)...having a guitar tone that is heavily distorted helps too. RIP Dime...”Watch It Go!”

Amazing how people who have never heard this music, especially Pantera, can morph. The primordial instincts in the pit of their soul erupts in a gnash of teeth, head banging & the sudden urge to split skulls. Welcome to our world. Embrace the horror. 🤘🤘🤘
@libertydenied4 жыл бұрын
8:25 That's called a pinched harmonic. You can emphasize the overtones of a distorted signal very easily and agressively. If you want to hear more like that you should listen to a bit of Zakk Wyldes guitar playing.

Seeing them live on this tour, Cowboys from Hell, yeah, and having the lead singer, Phil, almost head butt me into a blackout because I had a meet and greet pass and told him he burned it F$#&ing down, he grabbed my hand and smash...one of my greatest concert moments ever ..then all 4 of them signed my ticket stub and I went home with a nott on my dome and a smile on my face... If Metallica is so trash then why are they living in your head rent free?
@dougpridgen96823 жыл бұрын
@@keithmorgan1170 Well that’s a metaphor so in order to answer I need to know what you mean literally. Obviously you can’t mean my head is an apartment and if it was I would definitely charge them so it wouldn’t be free. Are you asking why people remember things they dislike? If someone breaks their arm at fifteen and recalls the memory at thirty, would you ask them why they remember it, because it was an unpleasant experience? The false premise here is that people only remember things that are pleasant. So I could ask you whether the memory of this comment, that you find so distasteful because you happen to like Metallica (and therefore react to it defensively) is living in your head rent free? See how stupid that thought process is once it’s been dismantled and exposed?
