No way would this fly in America (once BYD gets around to coming here). Americans have a really low perception of Chinese quality. This is why Hyundai came out with a 10-year warranty in America -- to overcome the similarly low perception of Korean quality.

@@UnlikelyToRemember BYD is only interested in selling public transport and electric trucks to America. No question on warranty there, and they don't have a dealership arrangement like that in Australia. Warranty issue was never an issue in other countries, until Australia came into the picture. Apples and oranges.

@@jasonk203 There is a lot of EV competition in China. Companies there will definitely look to expand to other markets. BYD is moving into Oceania already, then I suspect Europe will come fairly quickly, and then America (probably 2025-6-ish).

BYD warranty for whole Asia is same, so the complicated little stipulations to wiggle out parts is BYD own fault. It should be seen as it is, BYD management for this region destroyed their initial impression of what their car brand & make is Frankly BYD should sack the in charge person for this region if the decision goes right up the ladder means, BYD is as sneaky theft as the rest. So should Not be trusted. If option are available go buy other brand cars. If u are wealthy enough go buy a Tesla.

I don't see much a big problem with the warranty. if anyone thinks an auto maker is gonna give 6 years (even 4 years) on the whole car, including parts that are bound to be worn out periodically, he is dilusional. I challenge him to find a real warranty like that from any auto maker. regarding the service cost, I think it is high and that goes to the local service provider. it is best someone ask them what is included. did they price in 4 sets tires and 5 sets of break pads for 160k km? those alone with labor costs, can cost more than 2000 bucks, right?

First and foremost pre-selling a car with no safety rating seems not just reckless but outright illegal. The constant moving of the goal posts is another major concern. And as far as warranties are concerned when your provisions for what aren't covered starts matching what is its time to bail. At the end of the day any contract must be based on a good faith basis and BYD is eroding any good faith they had when they originally offered the car for sale.

What are BYD trying to do, make potential customers go elsewhere? I'm thinking about it. Over the last year I've become a fan of BYD and have visited their experience centre in Sydney. The Atto 3 didn't interest me as I wanted something bigger. I've seen and been a passenger in the Han and was expecting to eventually buy two of these. When the Seal was announced I thought that perhaps I didn't need to wait for the Han (maybe one of each) because it looks like a great car. However the warranty and servicing matters that have popped up over the last couple of days is extremely concerning as is the matter of the safety rating. I will be buying two electric cars as soon as possible but unless BYD or EV direct fix their warranty conditions and servicing costs maybe Tesla will get my money. I wonder how consumer law will view this.

Most EV manufacturers (non-legacy brand) sell their cars online instead of through dealership to cut out the middleman cost. If BYD is using dealers to sell their cars, they have to share the profit with them or let them make some money from the service cycle. Thus the strange terms on their warranty. It is very obvious. Follow the money.

I think you are way right in you use of the Australian Consumer law. As I recall, from watching other Aussie auto experts that the law says something to the affect that you can expect what a reasonable person believes is appropriate for the purchase. So the question then becomes what can you reasonably expect from the car. We here in the US do not have such a law and I wish we did. My 2013 window wipers mothers went out in 2021. I keep my cars forever and I have never had a window wipers moter go out. My 2003 Ford still works fine. Anyway this cost me over $1200.00 to fix, same with my rear lift gate which cost about the same to fix. Was that "reasonable" not to me it was not. Most warranties in the United States very greatly between automobiles. In many cases as you have stipulated you have a 5-year unlimited mileage, or 100,000 mile warranty on the entire car. Then there are other manufacturers who offer a 3-year warranty on the vehicle bumper to bumper they call it and 100,000 mi on the powertrain. So there are a lot of different variations depending on the manufacturer you choose. And I'm really not sure what Tesla's is in the US. Perhaps this is just growing pains for BYD as they enter other nations. It would be good if consumer advocates from Australia could sit down with BYD and help them understand what an appropriate warranty would be for your nation. That way when everything was said and done, it could be signed off by everybody and you would have an agreement as to what an acceptable warranty for that automobile would be.

I bought stock in BYD and now I'm thinking that was a mistake, if you can't trust a company from the beginning then try to deal with them in a year or two. I had to deal with GM on their BS warranty items not being included, like water intrusion into the cab of a 2 year old 1500 truck and being told that it was a wear item so my head liner and electronics associated with water damage were not covered. I sold the truck! If I don't hear of an improved customer experience then I will be selling my stock and be glad I didn't buy one of the cars. Get your shit together BYD or your move into the western market is not going to go well! Thanks Viking, your the man!

In 2015 I brought a VW amarok with a 3 year unlimited warranty, i could of paid extra for another 2 year on top of that. and they still replaced the headlights after the warranty had expired. (one was replaced within the 1st year and due to a defect with the plastic 2 years later it looked like it was no longer roadworthy, the other had a touch of sun damage so they replaced both with updated units) Its time the laws change that manufactures must warrant cars for a minimum of 200,000km and 3 years, this will improve quality and the overall environmental impact.

Well Viking we haven't signed a contact as such but paid a deposit with the intention to buy which is good enough in my opinion so the warranty given at the time of paying the deposit should be upheld or at a minimum the vehicle should have an all inclusive 6 year/150,000km bumper to bumper warranty. It's deceitful and does not install great faith in BYD supplying a quality product or they BYD, believe its not a quality product they are suppling the Australian public with that should in theory outlast the warranty by several years. If evdirect and or BYD don't come to the party then they should expect irreparable brand damage that I don't think they will recover from. Byd is new to Australia, people are hesitant about this Chinese brand and this isn't going to help their cause as they try and launch the BYD brand in Australia.
