@@bobagorof yeah I agree, he's alot better than the rest. My position is more around lets not heap aload of praise on him just yet. He was good in the last series down under as well, his game suits it well being strong square of the wicket. @@mmjose76 Did I mention or even compare him to Pope? Pope has played 3 more tests and averages about 1 run less. (I think Pope should be swapped for Lawrence btw). He has certainly played very well but I just think its abit early to be heaping praise on him after 2 50s. He himself even said he should have gone on for a big score when he was set! Poor old Malan. I was quite disappointed they didn’t give him some praise for being our top run scorer. That's where I think the EBC took their foot off the gas, they saw that team and the people who were waiting to come in and decided we were fine for years to come. You only have to look at who were the young ones back then fighting to get into that good side 8-10 years ago? It was Root, Stokes, Taylor, Bairstow etc for the batting and as for bowlers we had them queuing out the door for a shot at playing and everything looked bright for the future for English Test Cricket. The ECB decided to not focus on test cricket at all and all of a sudden 5-6 years down the line there is zero competition in the background, it's alright saying drop Burns, Hameed, Pope etc etc etc but it's the same names rotating in and out because we literally have nobody else. Unfortunately we're back to that 1990s revolving door policy because this is the best we've got available at the moment. We should focus on the reasons why this is the best we can muster, that's the real question.

I’m an Aussie, I know the results so far look one-sided but there were some critical moments where I felt England could have changed the outcome, here are the key points I think England need to focus on : Pitch the ball up (Labuschagne played and missed a lot, he is more likely to nick a ball pitched up), pick a fast bowler and a spinner for variety (don’t judge Leach from one bad game in Brisbane), be patient and determined when the game starts to go against you (they start sessions well but then panic and collapse when they lose a wicket or an Aussie starts to get some runs), don’t bowl no-balls (it starts at training), either leave the ball or swing hard when batting (don’t just stick the bat out there asking for a nick).

For seventy years , I have been hearing about the problem with county cricket. I feel the solution is creating a zone system (North ,South, East and West) and select teams and play four day matches from these groups. This would create a higher standard similar to our Sheffield Shield. I realise this is impractical now because of the phrenetic nature of present day cricket and the need to generate revenue but this would lift the standard and create the mindset needed,

Before I start my little rant, congrats gentlemen on your wise and insightful views on the current woes of the English cricket team. I enjoyed this very much and look forward to your next. As an Aussie, of course I want our team to dominate the Ashes and send your guys packing but I also share your obvious frustrations with unbelievable team selections. Leaving Anderson and Broard out of the Brisbane test and put them on ice reeked of England putting all their eggs in one basket in the hope of them bowling you to victory when in fact massive damage has already occurred both physically and mentally. I can’t help but wonder after hearing your comments on County cricket why England doesn’t include a system of a level above County which would offer stiffer competition and better prepare your national team for tests. I know it’s a simplistic idea but if England was split in four and North, South, East and West teams were chosen from the best players from the county’s - Wouldn’t this then provide a more elevated level of competition with the result being players chosen from these divisions are then available for selection to the national squad? I wish you well because I’d dearly like to see a closer contest. Merry Christmas and good luck Boxing Day. 👍🏻🇦🇺

The problem is the Duke ball, in the mid 2k's you deliberately changed it so that the seam is, simply stupid. So now it swings with the shine for 20, then reverses for the next 40 - 50 and you get a new ball at 80. No wonder you only develop pedestrian seamers, when does a spinner develop? Why put your body through bowling pace, when you can toddle up and hoop it a metre? No wonder your batsmen only play cross bat? As for the pitches in these days of drop in pitches there is simply no excuse. And as for finger spin not working out here, that is simply bull! India, Pakistan and New Zealand have no issue with spin.

Why is Burns still in the team he's had over 30 test matches and still averages around 30 , why is Foakes not the wicket keeper he's clearly miles better keeper than Buttler is and he's a quality batsman as well so no loss in the batting department.England would also be far better off to go with the 4 all rounders approach they had for a few years with Curran, Woakes and Ali all in the team (in addition to Stokes)at least it would strengthen the batting line up and not really weaken the bowling as they could still pick Anderson and Broad as the 2 all out bowlers, of course the sky pundits hated that approach but it would be a better option than the current approach.Pope needs to be dropped as well bring , specialist batsmen at and only averaging 29 after 22 tests is not good enough.

England need to take the approach South Africa did with their spinner back when they had four seamers. Paul Harris would build pressure while the seamers rested. England need a guy who's accurate and builds pressure when the seamers recharge and gets some turn when the conditions suit as well. I can't understand why Danny Briggs isn't considered, he's tall gets bounce and is accurate and is a decent lower order batter as well. Livingstone maybe who's a more than useful spinner and a destructive batsmen.

Surely the reason to pick any bowler is that he can take wickets. Run rates should only be considered when a decision between two equally matched bowlers needs to be made. To me, this attitude of picking spinners to keep things tight fundamentally misunderstands the way spinners bowl and the problem that Shane Warne has caused for all spinners since.

It just seems when looking at the last few matches England have played, the batsmen just seem to not know what their role is with respect to their role and contributions in the team. Let's take Butler for example who have been not amongst runs but if you see even against Imdia where one of the matches he stood at the crease almost till the time only 10 overs were left for them to draw the match. But unfortunately he hasn't either done that in a winning cause. I think promoting him to a higher position to counter attack no matter what and have somebody who can genuinely stay at crease for long should come down to occupy the crease and make sure they don't collapse. Cause with England even when they are playing long it is the runs they are unable to churn. If you look at Rishabh Pant he has been successful because even when he doesn't play a long innings , it is his scores that seem to be a big contribution. Or else for a couple of games , they could also try Butler at the top and somebody like Hasseb who can score to play at a lower order cause if Butler negotiates the new ball it gets easier for the others to score and what England hasn't done is both seeing off the new ball and the runs on board.

Really good discussion with the Sky Sports Cricket Team. Enjoy their insight. My personal view: + Burns stays in as I would always prefer a left / right hand opening pair. No other good replacement for left hand • Burns cannot play any off /cover drives and can only play if the balls is on his legs and when short on the cut shot. Unless he fixes his technique on his woeful feet movement. • Hameed is fine, but just needs to concentrate a little more. Sleep one hour earlier than current. He has decent patience / technique. Just needs to focus so he doesn't play at deliveries he doesn't need to + Drop Ollie Pope for one game to practice in nets or First class game to get rid of nerves. Seems to play himself out from his dismissals this series. Other than the brilliant catch in first test. + Bring in Lawrence at 7 as Pope replacement and bring Ben Stokes up to 5, Buttler at 6. + All England players to do fielding catching practice every day • Malan still at 3 and let him continue. He is 2nd best batsman for Eng + Drop Anderson for Wood subject to pitch conditions at Melbourne + Get a spinner to bowl straight - hold up an end - have three fielders behind bowler....

Selection, strategy, being "outplayed." These are all positive criticisms which I honestly admire as they can be improved but ultimately they are ignoring the overwhelming reality of Australia of having more talent and much better players at every position. Quicker, more athletic bowlers and 3 world class Batsmen which is a minimum at Test level. England have only 1 in Root currently with Stokes not fully fit, plus Australia's entire lineup isn't as mentally weak and prone to collapse as England.
