I think the way simon dressed for his birthday was a symbol, they wanted to express the way he wasn't didn't fit in the 'royal' life, he looks so foreign and different in that life, like a pajama pants in the middle of a gala.. the pants are cosy, comfy and just simply and not necessarily bad in any kind if way but they're so different and can't fit in that formal setting. That's literally Simon.

The people in the audience were in costume as Simon, including the oversized suit jacket, because the outfit was so funny, not because they actually thought it was cool. 😂

I LITERALY THOUGHT THE SAME , i saw the pants when Simon went to Willhem's room, and I was thinking "oh why he went with his pijamas pants and his new suit jacket", but i thought that he will change and then go to the royal house but when i saw him getting out of the car with that pants , I understood that those pijama looking pants were his outfit and he wasn't using them because he didn't want his pants to get wrinkled or something like that 😭
