People confuse exploration with long-distance travel. If you want to get from A to Z, then you want higher jump range. If you want to explore, meaning honk+scan interesting things, then low jump range is fine because there’s no reason to skip over nearby systems... you’re there to _explore_ them.

No you do need range. 1, to get away from the bubble quickly 2, to explore the sparse regions such as the void and getting through dwarf star clusters. and 3, fuel. You might not always use max range jumps, but you do want them.

I used to use the Orca as a PvP ship back before engineers came out, had three plasma accelerators as the weapons. I would use hit and run attacks on my opponent (literally hitting them with the ship after Pelting them with the PAs on approach then running away and repeating). I call it the Smash n Crash style.

Back when Thargoids were damaging stations in the bubble... the T7 made a pretty good SAR ship. Cheaper to outfit than a Python and lower rebuy. Lots of room for heat sinks. It makes a great entry-level painite miner before you step up to the T9 or higher ships.

I love my Type-7. It can make 10,000,000 credits with a single silver run and with seeker missile turrets and two fixed hard points it does make a nice missile barge but it is amazing how easy it is to avoid interdiction with this thing. My Type-9 however...yeah, I get worried every time I make a cargo run. I got absolutely destroyed on it's maiden flight and I almost got destroyed by a SINGLE eagle. The most embarrassing moment in my entire EVE experience.

I keep an Orca around that I painted yellow and called "The Magic School Bus." I love my Orca for combat. It's the equivalent of armouring up a station wagon, fitting railguns on it and tossing a few plasma guns on the passenger doors, then fitting a nice ramming bar on the front end. Slide around and tackle your way to victory with ballistic assistance! Quick edit: Yes, I mean this for PvP, not for PvE. Railguns in PvE are a bad, bad, bad idea.

T-7 is the most underrated ship in the game. With it's great jump range and cargo space it's good at multiple tasks like surface mining (for subsurface and deep core mining you want clipper anyway), passenger missions and trade but where this ship really shines is collecting materials and cargo from USS's, damaged stations etc. And it's cheap so you can afford having a whole fleet of them, specialising in every given task.

Orca's absolutely one of the best Exploration ships now, and her gank potential grew with freed up slots. I use mine as a general multipurpose ship. Sure she's not GOOD at combat in PVE. But RAM AND FRAG works ok to assassinate things at least. Also apparently Orcas are one of the easiest to use anti-thargoid ships which is just weird. Due to easy handling/great speed and high sturdiness.

Before they made it very, very easy to have about 100 million credits an hour after you start the game I would say the Hauler should have always been your first ship purchase. Everything D rated except for the A rated FSD and you have 20t of cargo with a fully laden jump range of 16ly for 250k including the ship. Free Sidewinder to Hauler was the biggest quality of life improvement I have had since I started playing the game.

When you published this, it mostly made sense ... but ... when I started a new Commander I decided to only by Good or better ships ... but I bought a Type 9 as a Painite Miner and it's really good at it, 646 tons of the stuff it can mine in one session has earned me Cr 500M a time, and it can fly without refueling or wasting cargo space on a scoop to high-value sales minimising pirate risks ... and then for "fun" I joined in the recent Xmas Community Goal to Reorte and couldn't be bothered to refit ... so bought another T9, a 756-ton cargo lugger and shifted 25,000 tons of turkeys in (Top 10% bonus) ... it paid for itself and also earning enough to buy a Cutter. It's not really "Good" ... but as an HGV for shifting massive loads, or burning rocks to collect massive loads ... it's better than "1-USE"? ( maybe for the Elite players who also play Euro Truck Simulator?). Proper ED high value play ... a top grinding machine!

Believe it or not, I actually used my Type 7 for exploration, laser mining, and passenger hauling. I've only been playing the game for two months, so it was (and still is) my only large ship. I'm well into the engineer/material grind, and kitted out for mining, it's got a 47 LY jump range (well, empty, that is). Hooray engineering. With engineered thrusters, it's also a lot more nimble than anyone expects; always makes me happy when I'm ferrying a full cargo of LTDs from Kirre's icebox and I manage to evade the two or three interdictions that happen on my way to a sell point! After getting blown up a couple times while mining (random secondary pirate scans well into the mining session), it was suggested I get a Krait MkII for mining. Big guns up top, subsurface mining missile and abrasion blaster down below. Now I don't panic when a second wave of pirates show up! Half the jump range of the Type 7, though.

As previously mentioned: I had every opportunity to buy a T-9 for mining and bought (And flew, until I'd amassed enough cash to buy a Cutter *and* the pirate-bits to strap onto its hull and... Other parts, to make it go faster, and have more dakka!) a T-10 mining turret boat abomination. And between mining runs I used it to farm pirates. Because it is a Q-ship, it is just a freighter with huge freaking guns strapped to it, but that's what makes using it so much fun! XD You can just let your copilot fly the ship while you go out in a fighter and murder pirates by the score.

You may get a kick out of this. I was out mining the other day and saw some AI miners come up in my contacts. Slowly but surely they made their way past me. Was a Krait MKII mining with a Vulture escort. Mkay. By AI standards I guess that makes sense. Krait MK II can be an alright miner and Vulture is a pretty decent little fighter. However then I got curious and decided to look through their subtargets. Thats where things got interesting. The Krait MKII was surface mining and didnt have any limpets and was instead manual scooping every shard that it broke off with its single mining laser, and the vulture, for whatever reason, actually had a refinery in it. The poor Vulture barely has enough energy to shoot its own weapons let alone run a refinery. Best I could work out was that was the Krait pilots way of "paying" for his escort's services, but even that's a bit of a stretch honestly.

The Hauler is the cheapest ship in the game that can get from Diaguandri to HIP 12099 in two jumps (needs engineering and a guardian FSD booster though). Ray Gateway in Diaguandri is the closest encoded materials trader to Jameson's crash site in HIP 12099, so I have a Hauler I leave at Ray Gateway and pick it up when I am going to do the Jameson crash site encoded data runs. The extremely cheap rebuy (less than 100k, even with a guardian FSD booster) makes it a cheap and efficient encoded data farmer. Fly from Ray Gateway to Jameson's crash site, fill up on the T4-5 encoded data materials that you can get there, crash ship and rebuy at Ray Gateway and exchange the mats. Rinse and repeat until you've had enough, then just hop back over to your normal ship and say goodbye to the Hauler until you need to hit up Jameson's wreck again. The next cheapest ship that can do it in two jumps is the Diamondback Explorer, which literally costs 3.5x to purchase/outfit and also has 3.5x the rebuy cost. The Hauler does take more of an initial time investment to outfit though, if you don't already have the Guardian FSD Booster unlocked. The FSD requires G5 Range/Deep Charge to get the range you need. It's gotta be D rated on everything except the FSD and you have to forgo shields for it, but at least you can add a docking computer and supercruise assist if you want them since they're weightless. That gives it just barely enough range to make the first hop from Diaguandri to HIP 12099 (39 Arietis 47.08x Ly required, you'll have 47.1x Ly range)

I graduated from a Sidewinder into a Hauler and headed out into the black after running enough missions and SRV-salvaging for a DSS ... came back to afford a Class A FSD and fuel scoop ... went out again in the high-class stars scanning metallics and finding Water and Earth-likes on my own (not RtR) until came back again for a DBX and bought-in to the non-combat engineering ... and just recently when I got my Elite Explorer (done no combat at all, but traded well into Broker) ... and once again I bought Haulers to go and collect the Asp Explorer and Python trader/mission-runners I'd acquired to set up a home fleet at Jameson's Memorial ... as taxi's go, it's a pretty good entry-level explorer as well ...

Type 9 is ok for mining as well as trading. Also you forgot about passenger missions for the passenger ships.

Forgot to mention the Hauler is ridiculously cheap, so it's actually usable as a high-risk smuggler, since getting blown tf up won't send you to the salt mines to foot the bill. Also more internal slots on the Type-9 just means more Cell Banks ;) Oh and a class 8 Optional means you get the biggest and most expensive shield (seriously, its over 2 times the cost of the ship alone). If you ignore power consumption, Type-9 can technically get 10k shield strength and still have a 2 bay fighter hanger. I think if you email Frontier they'll even let you put a kiddie pool instead of the 3rd cockpit seat, with how slow it turns you won't have to worry about accidental splashing!

I know some people using Type-9 for exploration. And though Type-9 is kind of not "mine" ship, I understand them. It is not as bad at this role as it may seem, because it actually has one of best cockpit views in the game, competing with Asp. And of course it has lots, lots of internals. The only serious disadvantage is the jump range, for you can't squeeze more than 48lys no matter how hard you try. Still, there are two interesting things about this disadvantage. First, just like with other heavy ships (i.e. Cutter) you can afford taking some heavy staff with you (hangars for many buggies, strong shields and so on) without loosing much range. Well, because the thing is awfully heavy already and additional 20-30-40 tons won't make much difference :) Second, hey, 48lys is still way more than Anaconda used to have before all that engineering and guardian staff %)

Type 9 was my current ship last I played (pre-RNGneers) because like you said for cargo runs. Being interdicted in that thing always sucked. I suppose that's one of the reasons why I stopped playing. Flying that thing and staring at loading screens was boring as hell.

If they were to add SLF that can mine, I wonder if the type-9 will suddenly become the staple miner. As far as I know, the reason it's not used for mining is that it's too big to comfortably move around an asteroid field.

This needs to be a thing! SLF with MINING LASERS! Why doesn't this exist yet?
@NeroCM
@NeroCM 4 жыл бұрын
@@Reddotzebra ... Because it's the Fdev that are in charge of this. And also probably becase SLFs only have small hardpoints, while most mining hardpoints are medium, and God forbids to ever change the size of stuff to make it more available.
@Reddotzebra
@Reddotzebra 4 жыл бұрын
@@NeroCM It would work with small mining lasers since the fighters have two forward hardpoints, and you could have two of them on most of the larger ships. They would have to add a command for mining to the NPC pilots though...
@NeroCM
@NeroCM 4 жыл бұрын
@@Reddotzebra My idea would be to change drastically how the collector limphets work, and add in a type of "utility" SLF that you can equip with a number of different roles, like repair, trading (to land with large ships at outposts), mining and others I haven't thought about yet. Then you change the limphets so that they remain active until deactivated, and remove the need to have them in cargo (make them like the probes for exploration). That way you drop the limphets with your cargo open and go into your SLF. the Limphets follow your SLF and as you mine they collect the stuff and bring it back to the mothership. Or if they can't be assed to program the limphets to recognize the active ship, make them so that you can target the area you are in for collection.

Agree that Vulture and FAS aren’t particularly useful for anything other than combat. I’d think this is probably also true of the FDL, Mamba, and the Alliance ships as well. I guess the alliance ships’ jump ranges aren’t quite as shit but I’d pick a T7 for exploring before these. Maybe an alliance ship can be used for mining but then so probably can a FDS.

I built a PvP T7 for the lulz. Gonna be honest, it's a bit shit. But with a couple of phasing Cytos and a metric fuckload of HRPs (5500 hull) it's a giggle to use against big ships like the Anaconda.

Turn the hauler into a taxi. Give it a business class 3D passenger cabin fixed and unchangeable, for free. Noobs will use it to start into passenger missions, at least until they work out if they want to do something bigger and go for a cobra/viper. Everyone else will still use it for a cheap bubble taxi.
@Streak115
@Streak115 4 жыл бұрын
Ok, so here we go as to whether (I agree that) any of these ships are really 1-use. Hauler, It's a beginner ship and the only reason people who have other ships use it is for a taxi (or occasionally beginner exploration.) Type-7, and my first disagreement with you. It is a capable early to mid-game exploration ship due to the jump range and cockpit as well as having enough internal slots. Orca, you seem to ignore (non-bulk) passenger missions which is probably why you have left the Beluga and Dolphin in lower tiers than the Orca. These ships are alright at exploration and have a use for hauling passengers. Additionally, these ships are used for combat because you can make them acceptably quick with a large amount of hull reinforcements and just ram other ships to death. Vulture, you are completely correct. It is a combat only ship. The same goes for the Fer-De-Lance though because it is just a bigger Vulture (as far as capabilities anyway.) Assault Ship, not going to argue about this one. Type-9, if you count surface/void opal mining as a separate thing from trading then this has two roles. It is not a fast or maneuverable ship, but it does have the hardpoints and internal slots to do both types of mining effectively.
