Monaco being "Within France" implies that it's within France's borders. "Within" is used to define boundaries and describe that something is inside something. You would really only say that x is within y when y completely surrounds x. Monaco is thus not within France due to it's coastline, and Aiden takes home the W here.

I’m pretty sure(I’m not an expert in maritime law just a geography enthusiast) Monaco is a city state, as was discussed. Monaco’s land border is entirely French. Monaco’s maritime border whilst mostly bordering French waters likely also borders Italian waters as well. The main point of contention seemed to be the wording of “within.” Within possibly meaning that Monaco either is an enclave of France(a portion of territory within or surrounded by a larger territory whose inhabitants are culturally or ethnically distinct.) or its a territory of France(like Hong Kong for example) On the first point, it probably would be considered an enclave. The coastline muddies the waters, but because it’s entire land border is French, and even it’s maritime border is mostly French(with some Italy,) I think it’s fair to say “within” France even if that’s not entirely true.(Aimen brought up Singapore. In Singapore’s case, it has a lot more maritime borders with other nations than Malaysia, namely Indonesia so the situation is somewhat different.) As for the second interpretation: it is entirely a sovereign nation. There are no doubts, the only claim of the opposite you could make would be of a cultural imperialism of sorts. But that is a whole different conversation. In conclusion, Aimen was more technically correct, but I don’t think most people would correct his statement(I probably wouldn’t.) 49:50

Monaco, Vatican City and Singapore are clear city states. Vatican City is entirely WITHIN the nation of Italy, whereas, both Singapore and Monaco are not encompassed by their bordering nations. If there was a city-state between Germany and France for example, it’d be wrong to say “The City State is encompassed by either France/Germany.” Something to note however is that using the phrase “Hong Kong is within China” is a correct statement, albeit under different circumstances. Hong Kong has its own government that maintains autonomous control of her territory. However, as the UN recognizes China’s ownership of Hong Kong, “Hong Kong is a city state within China” makes sense

City-states are countries that consist of one city. Monaco/Singapore/Vatican City...All countries, all one city. Adin is wrong because he said Monaco is not a city-state. Ludwig is wrong because he said Monaco is within France. He didn't know that Monaco was a country and heavily implied that there was some sort of political connection between Monaco and France when he first said "within France". Somehow not "a part" of France but not an independent country. The "within" argument happened after googling and he switched arguments to another incorrect argument about France somehow surrounding Monaco. Something like 40% of Monaco's border is water. It's not within. They're both wrong because neither one of them knew what a city-state was.
