So, this is exactly what Ukraine joining NATO could entail for Russia. And you think that suddenly that's not threatening? The modern Russian Federation under Putin is a terrible, authoritarian regime, and the war is absolutely barbaric and inexcusable, but in terms of wars, coups and foreign intervention, no country even comes close to what the United States have done in the last hundred years. So for American geopolitical rivals, there is a lot of justification for feeling legitimately threatened. Or in other words, before you talk about the countries Russia has attacked, maybe take a minute to reflect about the countries America has attacked (or the civilians NATO has bombed). And this way, by being a bit less jingoistic, you might come with a different conclusion about whether it's only Russia to blame for not wanting enemy bases near their territory (just to clarify, I think Ukraine is not guilty at all, they at this point only want to defend themselves from Russia, but 'the West' certainly has a part of blame as well, and more specifically the United States for a long, bloody history of struggles for world dominance).

However, if what we are discussing is whether Russia has a right to feel legitimately threatened by having NATO bases next to their borders, then that's a completely different discussion, and for sure the role of NATO and the US in foreign interventions throughout the last hundred years IS relevant. A quick analogy: If I am a gang member living in a building, and a rival gang member is about become my neighbor, and I go and beat the shit out of the landlord so that he doesn't let this person move in, my actions are not morally justified. And the landlord is an innocent victim. But it DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE AT ALL to say that the problem is that the rival gang member didn't move close enough to my door. Estonia, Lithuania and Norway are all on the border of Russia, and they're NATO members. Both Sweden and Finland have officially applied to join NAYO since the invasion, which would make Finland the forth NATO member of Russia's border, I think old Vlad seriously miscalculated Invading Ukraine. And if the war continues much longer at the rate of cost in not just Ukrainian lives, but Russian ones, how long will it be before the Russian military get tired of this lunatic and the Russian Generals stage a coup. So far, just on the Russian side they have lost between 10 to 15% of their entire ground force. In an easy way to explain it, Russia has lost 400 Main Battle Tanks, to replace them it will cost 4.5 million USD each, that's 1.8 billion USD, and that doesn't even go into armoured personnel carriers off which 1,300+ have been captured or destroyed (over 10% of all the Russians have), to replace them it will cost 845 million USD. And it's just coming up to week 3, much more and it will start to be more than Putin's fault, being complicit makes you guilty too.
