As a H1B immigrant myself, I think h1B has a lot of loopholes that give body shoppers a lot of leverage over their workers with the restrictions it imposes on the visa holder. It is almost akin to modern day slavery. Not to mention the impact it has on American salaries and enriching 3rd grade businesses (aka body shoppers). We need to have something like a Canadian immigration system. If you are so highly qualified and there is a shortage of workers, you should be allowed to immigrate and compete in the job market rather than being slave to the company that sponsors your h1B and be abused.

People don't realise, the Republicans want to use the H1B process and other work visas to keep a supply of cheap and temporary labour pumping into the US. It keeps wages down for Americans all right. Increasingly, Americans can't afford their own country. The Republicans have also made higher education unaffordable for many Americans and have this horrible view only the elites should pursue it, too. People from outside the US think it gives them a great opportunity and aren't they smarter than Americans --- until they ask for too high a raise or want to pursue a green card and the employer can easily send them back or cut their visa sponsorship. The companies just want cheap labour. THe problem is: what do you do with all the unemployed or low paid Americans who increase each year?? You are getting a recipe for disaster, that's what. We don't want the Canadian immigration system. We want good paying jobs in our own country for citizens and green card holders first.

I went to grad school for software engineering. 90% of my classmates were Chinese or Indian. The economy is moving into a high tech era and instead of finding ways to get American citizens into these programs and filling this role you want to bring over foreign labor to work for less wages to fill these jobs as American citizens fall deeper into despair and are left behind by a capitalist society which will do nothing for them. You cannot support an abandonment of the American working class and call yourself a populist of any sort. You are siding with Musk’s desire for his billionaire class to exploit cheaper labor rather than get Americans up to speed in the new economy. Shame on you. In any other society you’d be expelled for being a traitor. This isn’t about racism, this is about taking care of our own people. Whether they are black, brown, white, yellow, or purple.

There IS something wrong with H-1B visas. When my son graduated from UT Austin near the top of his class with an EE+CS degree, the best paying jobs he could get for six years was $15-$20 an hour, in California. Then for two years, $35,000 per year before tax, no benefits. That's not enough to raise a family in most US cities unless you come from a rich family that can support you, or live with 3 other families and your wife is ok with living in poverty. Why should companies hire any engineer for more than $20 an hour when they can get an unlimited number of engineers from India at that price? The H-1B program is being abused. What I will say is if you're a natural born citizen, DON'T let your children waste time on engineering or medical degrees - unless you want to support your adult kids forever. Look for degrees that don't complete with the Indian and Chinese educational systems. Like Cenk said, get a degree in finance. That may work until India starts cranking out finance majors, then try something else.

H1B Visas are not a bad thing, but how corporations use them is. Oh, we need to post a job before we import labor? Ok we want a DB2 DBA for a salary of $40k a year. What, we didn't get any applicants for paying half what is market value? Ok, H1B then! And then we have labor that can't quit when we under-pay them and treat them like crap or they get deported. It's not about attracting the best and brightest. It's about cheap, indentured labor. Same reason companies don't let immigration reform happen. If all the farm and construction labor had actual rights, it would cut into their bottom line.

I don't believe I am hearing this on TYT. I totally disagree with Cenk. H-1B visas are mostly used to bring in workers who want to immigrate and are willing to work starting at a lower wage and/or will put up with bad work conditions to not risk losing their visa. I work in Information Technology which is where many of visa holders work. The skills that pass for specialized skills are often just very basic computer knowledge but in their country they call it an engineering degree. I have watched the wages for very skilled American workers with years of experience decrease because there are so many people being allowed in on these visas and it's cheaper to hire people trained in south Asia where the education and training cost less than in the U.S. As a result of the student loans and debt many Americans carry from University and specialized training they can't afford to work for the wage someone seeking immigration will accept until they get their citizenship. Another negative is that U.S. companies no longer spend money to upskill their employees because it is expensive and so many people would just leave for better paying work once they got valuable skills. If the visa only applied to people who have skills nobody else has, far fewer people would qualify and I could support the visas but that is not what I have seen in my field.

I completely disagree with H1B visas not because I'm racist but because we do not have a talent shortage. Companies routinely hire H1B's force their American employees to train them and then fire their American employees. We have millions hundreds of thousands of foreign college students to American universities that graduate and are eligible for work visas but a company will pass over them to hire an H1B because they want the indentured servant they don't want someone on a work visa. Why? Because they can pay H1B as little as $65,000 for a job they would have to pay in American or someone on a work visa 150k for. That's why these companies want H-1B's. Because then they are also indentured to the company sponsoring the H-1B they can't leave for higher pay and go work for another company That's the big thing they don't like having to compete for talent. It's not a shortage of talent it's a shorter talent out of price point they want. The only exception is if you have a truly world-class talent I mean you're fighting the Cold war and you need to get Albert Einstein out of Germany to help you develop the atomic bomb. Maybe in that situation H-1B's may be appropriate. However in most cases American universities graduate the best top tier talent in the world bar none it is not available and many of them are foreign-born students who come here and are eligible for work visas but they get passed over and have to go home and then they get to come back on an H1B does that make sense? No except that they want them to be indentured servants not on a free-floating work visa able to be sponsored and go to any company for any level of compensation.

There is a lot of talk about opportunity in this. For a lot of Americans, they don't feel like there is opportunity for them. Education in this country is far to expensive, housing is too expensive, and if you can get by just barely through higher education with a STEM degree, you might not be able to get a job in the field you studied because it was outsourced to a foreigner. I personally wouldn't mind mediocrity, living simple and being content or even comfortable in the lower class, but you can't do that, and you have a very narrow window to even get a hand on the ladder to begin climbing. We have some of the wealthiest people here in this country, all of them are making billions off of the labor they outsource to non-American citizens. And where does that wealth that they have go? Not into making the country better, not into making sure there are more opportunities, not into solving problems and making life easier for everyone, but into the wealthy's pockets where it sits and stays, so they can add another three figures to their weekly pay. Our resources, housing and jobs are being outsourced, even to people who don't have a visa. Where does that leave the people who were born here? Working a dead end job, living paycheck to paycheck with barely enough to afford groceries. If only the success of the wealthy made life easier for the lower class, this might be amenable, but to me and many other Americans, its a problem, and it has always been a problem. Heck, this argument is the very thing that helped Trump get elected, an America first policy. But where are the Americans who would be the world class engineers? Working a dead end job and living paycheck to paycheck because they can't get through education, so they settle with four walls a roof and what food they can afford.

Even though he was born and raised here, I always thought it was naive of him to believe that right-wing racists would ever truly accept him as one of their own. To me, his desperation is apparent, and I pity him for not recognizing who he really is and aligning himself with people who ultimately despise him. That’s why I was pleased to see Laura Loomer remind him of how they truly view him. While I don’t support her racism, I’m glad this served as a reality check for him. Only a small fraction of H1B visa holders are more talented than Americans. H1B visa recipients are beholden to their sponsoring firm so will work longer hours without question. This benefits tech billionaires but takes away good paying service jobs from Americans. A large portion of H1B visa sponsors are Indian Multinational firms that have no intention of hiring Americans anyway. I think firms that want to hire using H1B visas should also be required to sponsor American engineering schools and students as well....an H1B tariff.

You are SO WRONG, Cenk. Either you don't know much about US labor history or you just want to cozy up to the oligarchs. From at least the 19th century, capitalists have been bringing in workers from other countries specifically to undercut the wages of workers who were already here. One of the most infamous examples was the importation of workers from China to work on railroads and mines. Employers gave preference to Chinese workers who declined to join unions and accepted lower pay. Workers who were already here could not find employment and launched protests. [See A RUMBLING IN THE MINES, by the Southern Poverty Law Center.] Meanwhile, employers and towns treated Chinese workers with contempt. In Oregon, they lived in a network of underground homes and business because they weren't allowed to appear on city streets at night. A law was passed preventing immigration by Chinese women, to prevent the formation of families. Today, employers use the green card system -to bring in foreign workers for the same purpose--to replace American workers; not for jobs requiring "great minds" but for mundane work at a lower wage, leaving Americans unemployed as Republicans threaten further destroy the safety net. Most importantly, the labor Elon and Vivek want to bring in can be abused at will because any green card worker that dares to object will be immediately sent back home. The green card system enables capitalists to continue treating workers with contempt, but in the process, burdens the US with larger numbers of unemployed and underemployed workers at a time when homeless is skyrocketing. You are on the wrong side of history.

That's why Vivek and Elon are talking about 70, 80 hour work weeks and forgoing any sort of work-life balance. They want just want to import cheap labor for exploitation. This is analogous to bringing in scab workers to a strike, it only undermines the collective power of working people. I know the average american doesn't interact with Indian people much, but lets be clear, Vivek and the other guy aren't saying they want a expansion of your H1B1 visas so more foreign workers to come to the US, they want it expanded so more INDIAN workers can come in. Indians are VERY tribalistic, which can be a good and a bad thing. Here in Canada, when many of them get in roles of leadership, they slowly get rid of anyone not Indian and only hire their own (and i'm not just saying this, not only was I and many of my friends victims of this, it's a widely known issue here). Also, as for the comment about them.....defecating....in questionable places, um...., yeah, that's actually a thing. Yes, she said it to be racist, but it's not entirely false. Before people start saying "racist" or whatever, this is what other Indians have said here, and no, it's NOT the vast majority of the that do this. Just look it up yourselves if you don't believe, because a small percentage of them do that here as well.

This is why they push their kids into professions that are respected in society and pay well. Damn the fact that they may be condemning their kids to a life of misery. If they actually did their research vivek and elon want the H1B's because they can pay them 2/5 the average costs of what it takes to pay an American doing the same job. Flooding the market with people willing to work for much less than a countries native population is such a wonderful idea...as someone who lives in Surrey (Canada) I can attest lol. I've also had 2 different punjabi uber drivers tell me about friends/family working for cash for well under min. wage at fast food places after I politely asked them about the subject; so why would they hire people like me for $16-18 /hr when you can hire someone who will do it for half that? I also think that if America's culture is broken making Americans unfavorable for tech, STEM, and other specialized jobs then there should be a focus on improving education and training in America so that native born Americans can do better in those jobs. Other countries like Finland or Germany have managed to make education accessible to all through more comprehensive tax-based systems and strong government investment. However, the U.S. would need significant political, economic, and cultural shifts to adopt such a model, which seems unlikely in the short term due to the entrenched systems in place.
