TikTokers are organizing and taking the fight to pastors, preachers, and churches who engage in politics in hopes of stripping them of their tax-exempt status, per the IRS’s rules. The TikTokers want to bring attention to how the IRS is completely feckless in enforcing laws that separate church and state actions and with the continued rise of evangelical Christians politically organizing, it’s hard to see this as a bad thing. "The latest TikTok challenge is going after the tax-exempt status of churches whose pastors talk politics from the pulpit.
In order to be exempt from taxes, the Internal Revenue Service prohibits nonprofits like churches from a variety of activities, including being involved in political campaigns and excessive lobbying.
Critics have long complained that the law is essentially toothless because it’s almost never enforced against religious institutions.
But TikTokers are looking to change that. Reporting churches for violating the prohibition on political speech seems to be the platform’s newest effort.
The challenge is partly inspired by a wild tangent by a pastor in Tennessee.
“If you vote Democrat, I don’t even want you around this church,” Greg Locke of Global Vision Baptist Church ranted at a recent service.
“You can get out. You can get out, you demon. You can get out, you baby-butchering, election thief. You cannot be a Christian and vote Democrat in this nation. I don’t care how mad that makes you. You can get as pissed off as you want to.

To clarify, I know taxing those specific churches wouldn't account for that much money for the government to be honest. HOWEVER, with the way a lot of churches choose to spend their money, in a sense bigger steeples, because EVERYTHING has to come down to how big your shaft is, but also high end audio/visual gear, or unnecessary remodeling, as opposed to what the church SHOULD do, like feeding the hungry, housing the homeless and otherwise helping the community, I would LOVE to see a lot of these "mega churches" dis-a-fucking-pear. The tax exempt status of churches isn’t because of 1st amendment. It’s to acknowledge the charity services that they provided (soup kitchens, ESL, clothing banks, etc) that relieves the burden on the govt to provide. Unfortunately, most churches don’t provide those types of services anymore (and they shouldn’t get tax breaks).

when I was in the Mormon temple (for almost 2yrs) we had a big event in which we split into men and women to be addressed directly by the prophet via special pay-per-view event (not joking about that). After a brief pseudo-benediction-sermon that was so generic it was laughable, it switched over to his rep who proceeded to go over, state by state, county by county, and tell everyone how to vote on every election and ballot initiative in 2003/4 cycles. with rare exception, it was pro-republican all the way. I joined the Navy, then the NSA before the disgust really set in.

Greg Locke’s neighbors absolutely hate him. His church is a revival tent that is constructed on his property. The problem with that is that property is zoned for residences, not churches or businesses. The loudspeakers that he uses can be heard loudly and clearly throughout the neighborhood.

It’s about time! Politicizing from the pulpit and elsewhere deprives them of their tax-exempt status, and should! I have been commenting on this issue for years. The consequences for refusing to follow guidelines are clearly cut. They need to be applied so that some of the radical sects feel the pinch and either lead, follow, or get out of the way regarding separation of church and state.

Please cite one actual instance in which people were prohibited from assembling to worship from their cars, date, place, name of church, etc.. During the polio scare of the last century, people used more common sense. When a vaccine became available, people took it. Perhaps the fear of paralysis was greater than today’s fear of death.

Grew up and still live in the same town as Greg Locke. When he was in middle school he dressed like vanilla ice. I only knew him as that Vanilla Ice kid.
