The "I'll be around."-line makes more sense if you take the deleted scenes into account. Somerset wasn't just planning to retire, but also buy a house and move out of the city. He changed his mind from giving in to the apathy and escape the horrors of the city or society altogether, to staying around and do what he can to help because he now believes that the world is worth fighting for. This change of mind is foreshadowed in the scene where after having the discussion with Mills, we see Mills go home and lay down to sleep next to his wife, while Somerset can't get any sleep and throws the metronome that he use to drown out the city, symbolizing that he can't allow himself to ignore it anymore. He can't stay apathetic because Mills really got to him.

After 24 years and a dozen viewings I've finally realized the most evident part of the movie all three guys seemingly also missed. John Doe's original plans for envy and wrath were disrupted by Somerset illegally obtaining library data, his patriot act move. That interruption is the very event that leads to Detective Mills and Tracy Mills getting swapped as last minute replacements for whomever else he'd been planning on doing this or something like this to for over a year. So Somerset is inadvertently responsible for the ending. John Doe could never have known Mills was transferring nor include him in his master plan, he has no cash, no way to tell what was compromised and had to improvise last minute.

1:10:44 This depends on the state, guys. We got 50 of 'em, plus other territories. In some states, a gun is harder to get than a political office. In others, it's the same as buying milk and eggs. And then there's tons of variation in between. Yes, some states don't require specific permits or licensing, but no state purchases from a store go without a federal background check. While the efficacy of this is up for debate (I'm not here for that), I just didn't want people to think "no license required" = "absolutely no legal processing." As for switchblades, same thing. No overarching federal regulation but some states do allow them in limited fashion, either by name only, appearance only, function only, or some combination of the three. Se7en takes place in NY, yeah? So... legal only during hunting/fishing, but a likely not a thing to worry about for a cop in the 90s. The number of states in which a "switchblade" is flat-out illegal is relatively low. As to WHY they are limited/prohibited in some areas, it's more to do with image and reputation back in the 1950s than anything as they are not considered very reliable or sturdy as far as knives go. Combine lingering legal statutes with the average perspective of someone like Riley who has been told that they are illegal and dangerous for most of their lives, and we end up with a continued mythos. P.S. That's not a dig at Riley, just saying that the average person doesn't know what they don't know... I mean, I don't even know what you Canadians have instead of states... Provinces or Colonies or something?

I know its late, but I think Sommerset represents a person between all points of view in the movie from the viewers perspective. He tries to understand the John Doe and in some cases he shares some of his point of view. John Doe to me, reads as a person who was apathetic, or tried to be apathetic, but then tried to do something about it in his own messed up way. I think that is why he doesn't stop Mills with action, he takes the place of the viewers who also do not know what to do in this situation Mills is in. Afterward we can reflect and say that we would stop him, but in the moment of how messed up it is we don't know what to do.

To buy a gun you must pass a background check. A license requires a very extensive background check that can take several months depending on state. The license lets you buy a gun and skip the background check, but must be renewed every few years. The laws are much more strict than the media would have you believe.

Se7en :) is in my Top 10 of all time. Thanks for the review and insights. Love this channel! James, the 'Tractor pulls' comment stems from a loud event where guys build high horsepower tractors and pull a device known as a sled (like a long trailer with a large moving counterweight) that advance from the back to the front increasing the drag on the tractor down a dirt track and competitors win the event depending on how far their 'built' tractor can go based on HP and torque. Tracy made the comment seemingly because they moved to a noisy city (with sirens, soothing, vibrating homes from trains) from a more quiet, rural area that would have these semi 'home-grown' or 'hee haw' events. Just wanted to add, in case it matters.

As an American watching this when James finds out that you do not need a license to own/buy a gun is interesting . Just to let you guys know most states you can buy a long guns (shot guns, black power rifles, "normal" rifles (bolt action 308 is common and semi auto ar-15, sks, ak-47 ) with no license ( some states have clip restrictions, my state does not ) just a simple background check, When i bought my ar-15 took me like 30 mins. Hand guns are more regulated depending on the state, and anything that is full auto ( heavy and light machine guns ) and huge like artillery (yes you can own/buy a howitzer or a tank fully functioning) with a proper licenses.

My biggest issue with the movie is that the killer's master plan doesn't even really work. He forced the "wrath" situation, and it didn't fit the rest of them. For all of the rest, he killed them based on one of the sins, and BECAUSE of one of the sins. Yet for wrath, he didn't kill him, and he hadn't been some blatant example of the sin. John Doe forced it, and Mills wasn't killed in some thematic way. Doe's last sin wasn't Envy, his last sin was the lame writing ending for his master plan... lol

@@niclastname I think of all the cases only pride dies because of pride. Glutony is force fed and killed by the kick on the side. Greed wasn't greedy when he died, he made the smart choice of cutting the lovehandles but died anyway. Lust didn't have any choice, sure they were at that place at that time but what ultimately killed her was the gun pointed on the dude's forehead. On the sidenote I don't think the masterplan has to be perfect in the gritty imperfect world they depicted, and as they mentionned in the podcast the specificity of the murders don't matter that much in the end, except the final two

Base 12 is so much better in some areas if you think about it! For example, you get halves (6), thirds (4) and quarters (3) as whole numbers (as opposed to 5, 3.33333, 2.25). Think of how we count the hours of the day. (btw, school kids in the US are having trouble reading the analog clock so they removed those clocks from the classroom... why teach them how to tell time instead, right?)

Unfortunately you can go buy a gun with a very minimal (if any at all) check, right at your local walmart here in the states. In Ohio, you can't buy a handgun at 18, just a long gun. At 21 you can get a handgun and get a conceal & carry permit. Rifles are fair game for Open-Carry with or with permit.

There are two themes in this movie that intersect: The depravity of humanity and the decline of modern society. So, the meeting in the dinner between the wife and Somerset is essential to show that there is good in the world that should be cherished. So, as usual, Riley is oblivious to the point. That meeting is presenting the opposing view. The result or final conclusion of the movie is that decline is overwhelming and good are faced with a Sisyphean task to reverse the tide. John Doe's goal is not to commit crimes or hand out punishment, but to draw attention to the profound decline. Again, I enjoy David's comments on the cinematography.

So for guns in the US, you do not need a license to purchase a gun, only to carry it outside of your home or car (carry permit). There are probably more specificities depending on which state but overall it's pretty much walk in, walk out.

I didn't see any arc for Sommerset. If he made an arc he WOULD have tried to stop Mills. He's as apathetic at the end as at the beginning. The point of the movie to me is to see Mills be driven to the edge of sanity and then pushed over the edge.

There's a differnece between like a dark story, and a tragedy. I don't know if this film is really a tragedy per se. A story like Hadestown is a classic tragedy. Where hope is a thread throughout, but due to a lack of full character change, the story ends on a sad note. I'm not sure Se7en quite does that. It's different, just dark. EDIT: Idk if this is a thing or not, but it's almost like tragic heroes over-learn their lesson. Orpheus (in Hadestown at least) is sorta un-attentive to Eurydice, and she ends up in the underworld because of that. Then in the end, he is too attentive, and that attention backfires and damns them both.
