@Samuel Astic LOTR - as in the movies - was very simplistic. The whole metaphysics of Middle Earth were dismissed and the whole thing reduced to a slaughterfest. Why did the Witch King have a ridiculously large flail? Why were the Mumakil sized not just like a house but like a whole city block? Because Jackson doesn't do psychology. He's "in your face". Only physical threats are real to him - hence also why in the beginning of the first movie, he made Sauron a battle machine stopped only by a lucky strike, the precise opposite of what happens in the books. LOTR is great popcorn cinema, but that's about it. It's regularly completely over the top to a point where it gets comical. If anything, Jackson has shown that just because someone read the books, that doesn't mean they understood the books. The core theme of free will and its responsible exercise by the individual on the one hand the control of the will of others on the other was completely discarded in favor of having genocidal maniacs as opponents and heros who get told by others what to do because they can't make up their minds themselves.

31:22 - The Buddy movie that James is referring to is probably "Nothing to Lose" from 1997, where he co-stars with Martin Lawrence, who at the time was still pretty big after the original Bad boys and his own sit-com. Tim Robbins also received a lot of praise for his role in "Mystic River" from 2003 and he had a pretty big role in "War of the Worlds" from 2005, which stars Tom Cruise, who Tim Robbins also shared a cockpit with back in 1986 in the end of Top Gun after the death of Goose. The most iconic role of Clancy Brown is probably as the Kurgan in the original Highlander, also from 1986.

I disagree with their opinions on Andy being the ideal. I think Andy is his hobby, he's a rock and that means he's quiet, withdrawn and fairly strong, but he's also shaped by his environment "pressure and time" as the book calls it. Andy gets to the prison as a naive banker and with pressure and time changes into what is needed to survive shawshank. For example the last scene where Andy deals with the sisters he essentially turns to them and says "look, I know you're monsters but I can be the bigger monster" and they beat him and after that they get dealt with and never bother Andy again. I believe the reason it's hard to see Andy grow and change is because you see him from the outside so it can be difficult to see which parts are still the good natured banker and which are the hardened criminal looking to survive.

Ultimately, Andy knew he was innocent. There's a huge difference between the "innocent" game they all played with one another, what they all knew their crimes to be, and Andy knowing he was innocent.

There are a large amount of people who are "religious", but are quite cruel and or hypocritical people. Religion has been used for cruelness and terrible things pretty much since its existence. People use it to judge and control others. If you weren't religious, you were evil, but quite often, it was the other way around.

Shawshank is a 9.9/10 end of conversation, if you found yourself bored then you just have an inability to immerse yourself in a truly great story. Not everything needs action packed scenes non stop, every scene contributes to the main climax.

Overall this movie is about affirmation and overcoming hardship so it will really depend on the viewers' mindset with regards to how much impact it will land. If you're going through a difficult period in life, this movie will probably uplift you tremendously. If things are going fairly well for which it *seems* for members of this podcast, maybe the impact will be less so.

1. Clancy Brown was the main antagonist in Highlander. How could you have missed that? 2. Tim Robbins' would have been considered A-list (on the low end of the list) in the 80's, 90's and 00's. He was part of the power couple Sarandon/Robbins? I would put Jacob's Ladder in my top 3 favorite movies (but that is just me). 3. Maine, where the prison is located, has very few non-white citizens. The prison would not have had as many non-white people than as is represented in the movie. 4. The prison is not representative of the time? If anything it was too rosy a representation of American prisons at the time. You do realize that the US still has chain-gangs like the one presented in Cool Hand Luke. I really like your podcast's comments on cinematography, as I think it plays to your video production strengths. Your knowledge of film and actor history is lacking. This leads to a number of odd comments and comparisons which leads you to miss a number of significant contextual points about this movie, for example the demography of Maine in the 1940's. When you are prepping for these discussions is it possible you could include some reading of the film's contemporary critiques from sources like the New York Times or Chicago Tribune? That way you could highlight what was seen as significant at the time, then you can proceed to deliver your 2020 film-goer's perspective.

So concerning the chocolate syrup thing... the entire movie was shot on location in Mansfield, Ohio, so no Hollywood sound stage. As for saying it's the best movie ever, it's more that almost every movie when compared against this directly, seems to be more flawed in some way. Watch some movie for the 1st time all 3 of you. You're from Canada - cover some Canadian movies, tell us a difference between Canadian and American culture.
