This silly thread on the Something Awful forums was my childhood, and the beginning of my Pokémon glitching adventure. Time to come back to it after 15 years, and look at it from the perspective of an experienced glitchologist!
Read the original thread: lparchive.org/...
Check out TectonicImprov's video remastering of this LP: • Let's Horribly Break P...
This is also my first time experiment with trying to create a commentated video. I might or might not make more in the future, depending on the community feedback.

6:22 Oh hey, that's me! Yeah, I don't think that anthropomorphization is particularly warranted, and I wouldn't write it that way today as such things have since become a pet peeve of my own as well. But, at the time, even though I knew it wasn't totally accurate, I thought it conveyed the concept well enough to the inexperienced. (I went by Starkclamp on SA at that time. If you load the thread in the archives, you'll see the account name as Adelheid, my current first name after transitioning in 2010, which is also used in many of my vids pre-2017. I have shifted away from using my irl name as an online handle, but I haven't been on SA since 2014ish I think, so I never bothered to update the branding there.) anyway good video

Sure but what about the game "trying to get back to normalcy"? Usually the code can't know something went wrong anyway, and there's no glitch that I know of where the code has a way to fix the effects of said glitch after it already happened. The developpers would rather fix the glitch in the first place: if there's actions the playee can take to end the glitch it's most likely just down to luck.

8:51 As far as I am aware, the leaked development maps just have placeholders for Viridian Forest. However a League HQ floor implies that the Forest was planned to be its own map since at least mid-way through development, if not earlier. The development League HQ floors are themed after the various dungeons in the game, starting with Viridian Forest, then Mount Moon, and so on. So the grass is probably a thematic tie-in and not something left over from earlier development.
@hi-i-am-atan
@hi-i-am-atan 3 күн бұрын
depends on which iteration within the leaks you're referring to. the earliest version of route 2 just had you traversing a simple forest-y area directly within the route, though there's also a winding forest path in viridian city itself that possibly could've had a warp to an option side dungeon. in the later version that actually looks like pokemon, meanwhile, route 2 is largely skipped over via two distinct gates ala the final version, though there _is_ an accessible patch of grass just outside the northern gate. interestingly, there is actually a _sign_ in the inaccessible stretch between the two gates, though describing it as "inaccessible" is perhaps not quite accurate despite there being no obvious way into it, as there are also a variety of houses tucked away into individual groves gated behind cut trees. so maybe instead of a forest, route 2 was actually traversed via a chain of underground paths ... while the devs were working out the assets for the gates, at least

Your voice is pretty clear ZZAZZ, and listening is sometimes easier than reading, but it's up to you whether you want to continue. As far as Viridian Forest, TCRF has the early maps documented and they look like Viridian Forest may have originally been a small inline dungeon before it got expanded to a full fat dungeon. Mt. Moon is also optional in that mapset.

Great video. The explanation of how some of these glitches happen on a more technical level was a treat. I think that describing games and other programs anthropomorphically can be a good tool for communication, specifically for when a real technical deep-dive would be difficult. Just saying 'it doesn't know what to do here' is a hand-wave, but to people who understand that there's actually underlying reasoning for the behaviors, it works. They should understand that there is just unintended behavior caused by a bug, and that the behaviors are coming from somewhere real. The trouble comes when your audience doesn't actually understand how programs work, and so take your hand-wave literally. That's what happens a lot of the time, especially when the speaker doesn't fully understand what they're talking about, either. RBY glitches can be a great educational resource for explaining how these low-level bugs work, so videos like this are valuable.

I often multitask and rarely only watch videos so I prefer commentated videos by far, hard to keep eyes on the screen for several minutes. But whatever you decide, I'll keep watching, this channel is awesome!

I never took the time to comment on your channel despite having watched your content since 2013, but I'm happy to see you embrace this style of content!

Voice reveal! 😱 Personally, I like the commentated videos too. I don't mind pausing the video to read large chunks of text (really, I don't), but hearing the narration is a nice change of pace. The content is just as interesting either way, whether commentated or text only, so I'm cool with either

Woah, a lot of very exciting new developments!! I hope the business is going well!! Covering a Let's Play thread is an interesting new idea for a video, and commentated was a wild surprise! Excited to see future experiments :)

The new format is cool. Suited for watching videos more casually without having to look at the screen all the time

Pokémon glitching community is incredible! You can now watch a voice commented video from one of the most important glitch scientists out there that shows off how much documentation on this stuff has advanced! Serious though, this was a very good year when it comes to your content, I hope everything comes good for you personally and I'll look back for the next part Man I didn't expect I would be alive for ZZAZZ's voice reveal 🙃
