My father never spoke much of the war. When he did: He was stationed at Pearl Harbour as an instructor. He was transferred to San Diego. His ship missed the attack by minutes. He was sent backed to do clean up. He found his entire class was killed. He spent the entire war as an instructor at San Diego due to a minor disability. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

You should look up “the rest of the story” done by Paul Harvey telling how we showed the Japanese the weakness in the Hawaii defense 10 years before Pearl Harbor.

I remember listening to the father of a guy i was stationed with while in the USAF in Turkey. The father had been on sentry duty on the beach the night after the attack and saw a small Japanese sub that had washed up on the beach (HA-19). During the actual attack, he was on the flightline and survived the wall of bullets. He said what saved him was prayer.

Pearl Harbor was effective. But it was extremely short-sighted when they decided to TOUCH OUT BOATS!

Within 24 hours of the Pearl Harbor attack, there were air raids at Midway, Guam, Wake and the Philippines and IJA forces were moving against the US and British garrisons in Shanghai China and the British garrisons at Weihaiwei (now Weihai) China and Hong Kong while Japanese invasion fleets were already sailing for British Malaya, Wake, Guam and the Philippines

The WZumwalt class destroyers are just under 16 000 tonnes. That's bigger than most WWII cruisers.

The date of statehood should be changed to 1959, of course.

Perhaps it's lessons learned, hindsight, what have you, but if that kind of cluster happened today, heads would roll amongst the top brass.

Admiral Kimmel and General Short were both relieved by the end of the year and Kimmel was court-martialed three times, once because a future Secretary of the Navy, Forrestal, did not think his punishment had been severe enough. Then serving SecNav Frank Knox even offered Roosevelt his resignation but it was refused. Heads did roll.

@@chocolatefrenzieya In my opinion, Kimmel and Short were scapegoated; they were denied access to what intelligence the US had developed on upcoming Japanese operations and were punished for not taking actions to better secure Hawaii; meanwhile, Admiral Thomas Hart (CnC-Asiatic Fleet), Douglas MacArthur and General Wainwright were not punished for performing just as poorly in the Philippines over the coming weeks and had just as much access to intel as Kimmel/Short.

@@georgewnewman3201 You know the Admirals aren't going to suffer. That's politician level, at that point.

@@chocolatefrenzieya Kimmel and Hart were both 2-stars breveted to 4-stars while commanding one of the Fleets and Kimmel was serving as both CnC-Pacific Fleet (CINCPACFLT) and CnC-US Fleet (CINCUS), answering directly to Admiral Stark (CNO). This made Kimmel, Hart and Ernest King (CnC-Atlantic Fleet) basically the second tier command under Stark on December 7.

Just "watch" what you can & when u have the time, go to KZbin playlist "history" , & then finish the episode. Also , im betting nobody "watches" a ' podcast' since its just the logo on screen . I personally am cleaning, driving , or painting the tiny Henti figurines i collect. Usually before the weekly cell contraband check & right after the church sacrifices of baby lambs. So busy nowadays!
