My three times great grandfather used the study of handwashing to reduce death and infection as his dissertation at the university of South Carolina Medical School ( named differently then).

@orbyfan Wonderful... Now if only there were links, titles, dates, or _any_ information to point us to those original videos. Instead, I guess we're supposed to just scroll through the entire back catalogue in hopes of stumbling on them? 🤷‍♂️

@orbyfan Uh, nope. (At least not on the Android app). When I go to the channel home, using the magifying glass icon to search for 'soap' gives me lots and lots of Non-History Guy channel results for soap brands. But regardless, the point is that the podcast editor knows what videos these are pulled from, but chooses not to share that info with the audience.

Modern detergents are far more effective than alkali soaps. I consider the word "soap" to INCLUDE detergents. Bathing was very difficult because of the need to heat water without modern plumbing. Also, the lack of chlorine made public bath houses centers of contagion.

A very common type of detergent are alkali salts of sulfionic acids. These are similar to fatty acids but have an acid group based on sulfur instead of carbon (and has three oxygen atoms making a total of five equivalent bonds to the sulfur atom, while a carboxylic acid used in soap will have two oxygen atoms making a total of three equivalent bonds with the carbon atom).

There's no known scientific evidence...but...but...it works!

There's been another change in medicine that would have resulted in a different acceptance of handwashing to prevent the transmission of disease. Mo den medicine tries to use the standard of showing that something does work, without regard to having to examine why it works. This is the difference between evidence-based medicine, which only concerns itself with the treatment that produces the best outcome, and science-based medicine, which wants to know why something works before using it.
