I miss those golden St. James days when singers such as Velma, and Rene use to sing up a storm. Saint James Baptist church had the best singers and musicians in town. Those were the good old days. It's very rare to find a church today with so much music talent like St. James church had back in the day.

Ok for me Dr. Velma Willis was not to be played with at all. She was a singers singer by all means. Now as for the sound of the organ, that is the one and only incomporable Rev. Charles Nicks Jr. Simply the best! This is a perfect combination and I miss them both terribly.

Ok here are the cold hard facts!. Dr. Velma Willis was an outstanding psalmist in her own right, and no one has to convince me of that. She was one of my favorites and I miss her terribly. Now as for a church organist, The Rev. Charles H. Nicks Jr. was one of a kind. He was a wonderful Pastor, and a flawless musician and he ruled the hammond organ like none other, and I was so proud to be a apart of the St. James Music Legacy!

This version of this hymn was originally done by the voices of tabernacle. Although Rev Nicks and the st. James adult choir recorded this, this particular segment is from one of St James's radio broadcast.

I love this singing in church. They used to laugh at women who sing like this and i always loved it. Is she still alive? How is St. James doing now? I have family in Detroit and would love to visit.

Lol...I can see how it might come across that way to someone just listening and not understanding what was happening in real time while this was going over the air. She was actually being Directed. Uncle Jay would actually stand there and direct her wherever he wanted her voice to go at the end. All those holds and acrobatics at the end was her following direction. She could do whatever Uncle Jay made up even if she ran out of breath (which happened all the time like here...lol). And EVERYBODY did whatever Uncle Jay said, even if you thought you couldn't! Lol. She wasn't showing out. She didn't have to. And the soloists actually came across way better in person than over the air (this is a broadcast tape) because the sound in that building was so balanced it was ridiculously good listening in THERE, but it almost always transmitted horribly unbalanced through those radio mics. I am grateful to God to call this Lady "Grandma". I miss her greatly.

No I know Rev. Nicks passed in the early 90's and the director passed some years ago - I was asking of the church as a whole - or does it just no longer exist period? I saw a youube clip recently of St. James singing Search me Lord with a woman directing. Was this a different St. James or the "New" St. James?

@stjamesbaby If Shield of Faith practices any of the behaviors I've seen here in your comments, I sure don't want to visit there when I come home to Detroit. You talk about salvation & forgiveness, facts, & reading the Bible, but I sure don't see any evidence of that in any of your behavior & comments. I say practice what you preach & find another separate forum to air dirty laundry, because this is certainly not the place for it. I'll pray for you.
