Ram Dass interviews Thich Nhat Hanh at State of the Wold forum. Thich Nhat Hanh discusses mindfulness in community. To practice is to live together in harmony, peace and joy. Our own transformation can only take place in a spiritual community. These communities are like families, with dharma brothers and sisters. The practice centers are not for yourself, but for the interpersonal community. When you help your dharma brothers and sisters, the joy comes back to you. If you practice in the context of sangha, sooner or later you will have a transformation.

ladyarini it’s important to take care of your body mind and soul. Staying mindful is a great tool to overcoming difficult situations that need time to heal. Stress and fear is a extremely toxic state for the human body and is known to cause disease and illness. What I am starting to believe is that you can do everything possible to keep the body healthy. Eat nutrient dense foods, drink plenty of water and take time out the day to meditate and exercise. We all have a way we plan on leaving this plane of existence through death. Take Ram Dass as a example, he’s lived a very healthy, happy and mindful life and he had a stroke . You can’t beat your karma. What’s going to happen is part of our path and there’s no way around that. So remember to enjoy living life to the fullest everyday because this life is temporary . Balance is key and is the answer to a healthy happy and fulfilling life. Love and happiness to you all.🙏🏻💫🌎☝🏼💚

Our works will far outlast our corporeal bodies. "These talks will end up on tapes and then on television sets" Ram Dass's work has outlived him and will continue to, just as Thich Nhat Hanh's work has far outreached his limited ability to teach in person and will outlast his limited human lifetime. This is True Reproduction.

@leelyquan
@leelyquan 8 жыл бұрын
+Mike N building a house is not the same as helping someone who needs a listener. I think Thay's message was that technology can serve as a functional tool to transmit the message, but the person who is suffering really need someone else to listen.

in a way, here Gautamo speaks differently-- Gautamo insists, that no-one can overcome anyone else's suffering, -- everyone has to take on his / her own suffering and overcome it. so it's not necessary to live in a group etc. even though the right environment can be helpful. Starting from that, it's not a matter of age to start changing live. It is more so a realisation, that something needs to be done and that there is a path, which everyone can go. Meditations are there many, some lead to the establishment of the four pillars of mindfulness, the pebble meditation here advocated does not. progress on the path depends on various things-- age does not really come into it, --

HANS You have to understand that Thich Nhat Hang Thero is helping the community to realise the meaning of Joy /happiness, inner peace to find within you, and the meditative practices is to help for beginners to be able to concentrate and to change their habits. So that they can transform negative energy - learn to be happy instead of being angry ( changing the thought stream so that the unwholesome mental factors will not react /get disturbed for unsatisfactory condition) He is not trying to overcome anyone else’s suffering, he is merely training their mind to overcome the momentary suffering and that is exactly what Buddha taught through meditation. We all know someone else can't change another person’s Karma. Higher levels of meditation practise you are referring to he is not discussing here, however he did mention about experiencing the disappearance and appearance of the tree which was in front of him while meditating his breathing practise ( does that mean he is now a ‘ sothapanna’ ?)

@@rajwarnakulasuriya5935 Gotamo sais: this is the straight path that leads to the overcoming of all suffering. this is the path I found and teach. Other paths lead to other destinations. Its the path we take, which determines the destination. Gotamo was very clear, that any change of direction affects the outcome. I am taking this from the Middle length discourses (152). As you say, thith Nah Han shows the path in a different direction, which cannot be expected to lead to the same destiny. Gotamo shows, that his path leads straight to a destiny which is permanent and all other paths lead to destinies which are impermanent, and which will bring more suffering in their wake.

Exactly. The contradictions in his words are astounding. First he talks all “supportive, compassionate family”, only to follow it up with “i’d rather recruit young followers, so they’re easier to train“. Rather than compassionately inviting all to his community (and many who may need it most), he defends a self-serving, ageist preference to hedge his own chances of “success” with younger, more malleable disciples. I’d previously respected and held this man in high regard. But frankly, this seems more like a cult recruitment video.

I believe the point may have been missed here. From what I understood Thay is saying that wisdom depends not on age. Essentially it is timeless and can be seen by anyone. I like to think of it as similar to playing an instrument. Will someone with 30 years experience of playing the piano be better than someone with 5? Maybe. But it’s no guarantee. We hear of child prodigies all the time. It depends on the individual, their understanding, their commitment, dedication and their skill. Age may help, but also it might not and if someone has trained themselves in a not so skilful way then their age/habits may in fact be an obstacle. But I do agree that older people may have had the chance to experience more of the world and come into contact with their own and others suffering. In turn this can be fuel to transform the heart and deepen one’s understanding and compassion. As always - there are no absolutes 🙏🏼
