Watch John Browne mix the lead and rhythm guitars for "I, The Creator" by Monuments in Cubase.
They're quad-tracked tones from the Line 6 Pod XT Pro, all recorded with John's trademark level of insane precision. He dials in the tone using Waves H EQ to notch out problem frequencies, and finishes it off with Waves H Comp to control dynamics.
To get the full session of multi-tracks for "I, The Creator" by Monuments AND John Browne's mixing session, join Nail The Mix ► nailthemix.com/...
NAIL THE MIX is an online mixing school created by Joey Sturgis, Joel Wanasek and Eyal Levi - the guys who produced bands like TDWP, Chelsea Grin, Blessthefall, Machine Head, Monuments, Miss May I, The Contortionist, Reflections, Born Of Osiris, Asking Alexandria and dozens more of this generation's best metal bands.
Every month, NAIL THE MIX members get exclusive access to the REAL MULTI-TRACK SESSIONS from a REAL ALBUM, and a 6-8 hour live streaming class from the producer who mixed it. These aren't bogus covers played by some nobody off of KZbin, these are the actual sessions by bands like Gojira, Architects, Periphery, Papa Roach, Machine Head, A Day To Remember and State Champs - and NTM is the only place in the world you'll get access to them!

John's playing quality is just so good that you barely need to do anything except for EQ, so inspiring. Time to crank that metronome and get to work.

It's seems they forgot to mute the string trees at the nut or bridge when tracking. You can hear them ringing in sympathetic vibrational glory around 3/4 through the video.

@@Waterinmenbenen I only really caught when I got a guitar that had it bad. The string rang above the nut and behind the Tom Bridge without the tail.. Where the ball ends if the strings go through the body. That makes the excess of the strings behind the bridge long, and very prone to this. Sometimes this effect still happens after Mutting the strings above the nut and behind the bridge.. In that case it could be a or the pickup strings. I put a little bit of cloth in the pickup springs to get rid of this. Of course, with a tremolo bridge, it could be the springs in the back cavity, which need to be muted with cloth/foam inside them. This is one of those things that once you hear it, you can't unhear it. I can hear it from a mile away, because I'm aware of it. If you use a noise gate, it can even interfere with your noise gate, because after palm muting, that ringing will keep going, causing your noise gate not to shut of when it's supposed to. You then crank the noisegate so it clamps down when you mute during rhythm playing, which is when this occurs mostly, but then the gate is too severe for lead playing, because it cuts off sustain, because the ringing doesn't typically happen during lead playing, because you're normally only picking one string at once and not picking as hard, so it doesn't trigger the ringing sound. It took me a looong time to figure this out by my lonesome. Most people don't ever realize this, without being shown the issue.. Especially not the pickup springs! Some are just lucky, if their guitar doesn't do this... But they might run into the problem and not realize what's going on. One way to fix it is to get velcro cable ties and cut thin strips. Go under over under over etc on the string above the nut (and behind the bridge if you have something like a TOM bridge), and then velcro straight over the top of the strings. Other people put foam under the excess string.. Others pay $35 for a clip (highway robbery). I either do the velcro method, use Tesla string mutes which are cheap, or make my own clamos for a specific guitar I have out of a neck tie clip and gluing sof side of velcro inside the clip, so that keeps the strings from vibrating.

Trouble is everyone cuts out the "garbage frequencies" 4K, 5K, 10K ect... But i would say 8K is a garbage frequency also. But cutting these too much can make your guitar sound kind of under water and lost that sharp aggressive sound which i also love too. They all have a place.

Pod was great while I was beginning, until I got more into mixing and realized there was so much work to making it sound good. There are really consistent nasty frequencies from every pod sound. There are no dynamics to the sound. A pod farm head or xd with a real cab or really good impulses is ok. For a mix it works fine but live straight from the pod sounds terrible. I've seen many live bands use line six amps or pods, and I said seen because I couldn't hear them.
