Hi there, Liron again here, coming at you with another episode of Painting Masters!
This time I'm featuring Thierry Duval, a french watercolor painter who creates REALISTIC paintings.
In fact, his work is in most cases photo-realistic.
I found out about him through Instagram, and it fascinated me seeing how he slowly builds his paintings up.
He works very carefully, and often masks areas of the drawing to protect them and save them as a highlight for later.
You can check his work out here:
Instagram - / thierryduvalaqua
Website - aquarl-duval.com/
I hope you enjoy this video, and we'll talk again really soon.
- Liron

I could watch Thierry Duval paint for hours, & I have. He is by far my favorite artist out there. Simply magnificent!!! If you haven’t watched him paint, mask, and paint again... you really should.

You know, I think the feel of realism is due to what might be called a calculated infusion of mystical light, capturing the feel of light when you are in a state of spiritual quiet and calmness, where your own body seems penetrated by light and the sub atomic particles are vibrating. Honestly…a sense of the immateriality of matter, hence, a sense of timelessness and immortality. Hope all is going well with you Liron!

Thanks for this series on masters. It has given me many many happy hours of watching masters. I discovered Thierry Duval only recently on instagram and spent nearly a whole night there captivated by his technique . He actually points out that he never uses opaque white. But he uses tones of masking fluid that he applies with the use of a ruler pen for lines and or a real vintage pen ( the ink kind) for dots and other details. So photographic a style is not really my thing but this artist is really on a league of his own. This explains the fact that he has more than 600.000 followers . Thanks for including him in the series

Great skill in those paintings - not an approach I would ever want to emulate, but you can't help but admire the technique. For most painting Y/Tube videos, I find 20-30 minutes normally works very well (with some variation to allow for the different requirements of what is being discussed/demonstrated). This video was a perfect length in my view and i enjoyed it immensely - thanks for sharing this artist with us!

Thank you so much ^_^ I'm of a similar opinion. I did a few experiments in realism, and enjoyed them as a different experience. But I find impressionism much more enjoyable and to be my "truth" (: Thank you for the feedback about the length too.

I need to go see how he does his foliage so well. In the last painting, did you notice the light reflecting off of something behind the head on the man in the white shirt, lighting up his hair from behind? He does amazing detailed work. I prefer the impressionistic but sure can't help but admire this talent. I like the longer videos for the information and I like your voice.lol

Hmmm, it could be it. But also - sometimes these mirrors can be tilted, and so students that stand in front of the painting desk can see what you do in the mirror. Like in this video with David Taylor (: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpCkqq1jrs-Mb5I

Hi Liron, I just wanted to say that this is one of your best vedios! the way that you blew up the art work to show details , and had your picture on the left was great, because it made a connection with what you were saying! not just a voice in the sky somewhere! I wonder how long it took the artist to complete his painting, with so much accurate detail? also,how much he sells them for! This stuff would make the famous masters, jelious!

You talk about drawing perspective often. I wish you would do an in depth lesson on drawing perspective. I’ve never had drawing classes (until yours lol) but I’m not clear on one, two and three point perspective (is that a thing?) Anyway, I think that kind of perspective explained for beginners would be helpful in understanding many of your videos. Thank you!

i like your long videos, we have time to let everytjing sink in and the context to settle in, i have only recently started to paint in oil and it is true its slightly easier to paint in oil (i mean you do need a different skill altogether but) than it is to paint in water. thank you for making such videos, it's onteresting to hear your perspective on compositions and methods :)

I found this video very interesting and it didn't seem too long to me. Sometimes I'll be watching a vid and think, okay wrap this thing up. Did not feel that. I wanted to note the litter in the painting with the pigeons. You talked about the litter in the final piece you showed, but I noticed that bottle on the right there, in the gutter, how bout dat. I feel like he has to be taking his own photos. I wonder if there was other litter and he just chose these bits. I don't think he sd to himself, lemme just paint in a plastic bottle here. I feel like the bottle was there. I feel like there may have been more pigeons. I get very fascinated with the editing process. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Yes - it is indeed fascinating! It's super-interesting when it's impressionism. But for me with realism it's taken up a notch. Thierry actually saw this (I sent him a message on Instagram), and he replied :D He said he definitely rearranged some elements of this scene like the pigeons. Very impressive (:

Liron I think it would be good in such reviews to explain what the artist wants to achieve from their paintings, assuming that they explain it somewhere. For instance here, why is he making works that look like photographs? Why not just use a camera? How much has he changed from reality and why? Also a daft question: why do you introduce yourself as "whatsup Liron"?
@LironYan
@LironYan 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the idea (: I do think it will be wiser to do some more research, whenever possible. I'll try to improve that aspect ^_^ And about the what's up haha - I don't know why this one stuck in particular. I may try a different one in the future =P
