The thing now is that since Messi and Ronaldo's overwhelming shadow and presence is no longer present we can go back to the previous standard of really good footballers and thus more competition for the Ballon D'or. There is something wrong in Harry Kane never been considered for the award while he was playing in the best league for many years being top scorer and performing for country in tournaments and now he moves to a much weaker foreign fans and media are now recognised his ability. Even Bayern is challenged every season by Dortmund or Leverkusen this season. Someone like Marseille doesn't come even close. I'm a Messi fan but I don't think he deserved it. More to do with his stature if we're being honest. I reckon If Haaland won the World Cup with Messi numbers and Messi won the European treble on his DEBUT season in England with Haaland numbers, Haaland would still have lost to him no debate because how can you beat that type of season. So why is the threshold different when the roles reverse? 🤷‍♂️

Any footballer with that type of season in a new league, a top 4 league, is winning the Ballon d'Or 10 times out of 10, World Cup season or not UNLESS you're competing with a World Cup winning Messi or Cristiano. Fortunately this will never happen again because the Messi-Cristiano era has finally come to an end, it's time for the next generation to shine.
