This almost happened to me, except it was with a credit card. With a combination of tech and common sense, we avoided being ripped off. We ordered a new card that was sent via FedEx. I'm signed up for FedEx delivery updates. These tell me when a delivery is coming but not what is being delivered. We were expecting the card to arrive on a particular date because it was being overnighted and the FedEx updates said a delivery was coming. I checked the mail room but there was nothing there. I looked at my Ring camera bc it detected motion around the time FedEx said there was a delivery but only the UPS guy walking by was captured. We downloaded the credit card App and it said that a transaction was attempted at a smoke shop that same night that it was supposed to be delivered but it was declined bc it hadn't been activated properly. Called the credit card company right away and they issued a new card. It's just crazy how on top of this bs you have to be yourself to avoid scams but I'm glad those bastards did not get one cent 😤 lol

Granted, I very rarely go out at all the past few years so I'm not sure what is "the norm" nowadays but about a year ago I was in a popular clothing store in the Garden State Plaza here in NJ and when I handed my credit card to the cashier, he somewhat timidly asked me to show some id. I must have said something like, "oh ok, my license?" as he started to almost apologize for having asked, due to store protocol. I was SO happy to oblige and thanked him for asking. I told him that it was a very good thing that he asked and that no one should be giving him a hard time or any grief over it. It was protecting me and in no way an inconvenience. He said that often people were annoyed by the request but I thanked him again and said that I wished it happened more often. I hope that it is indeed asked for more often these days, maybe not for the smaller, everyday purchases made in say, convenience stores or for gas or food but certainly for bigger ticket items like clothing, electronics, furniture etc.
