This almost happened to me, except it was with a credit card. With a combination of tech and common sense, we avoided being ripped off. We ordered a new card that was sent via FedEx. I'm signed up for FedEx delivery updates. These tell me when a delivery is coming but not what is being delivered. We were expecting the card to arrive on a particular date because it was being overnighted and the FedEx updates said a delivery was coming. I checked the mail room but there was nothing there. I looked at my Ring camera bc it detected motion around the time FedEx said there was a delivery but only the UPS guy walking by was captured. We downloaded the credit card App and it said that a transaction was attempted at a smoke shop that same night that it was supposed to be delivered but it was declined bc it hadn't been activated properly. Called the credit card company right away and they issued a new card. It's just crazy how on top of this bs you have to be yourself to avoid scams but I'm glad those bastards did not get one cent 😤 lol

Granted, I very rarely go out at all the past few years so I'm not sure what is "the norm" nowadays but about a year ago I was in a popular clothing store in the Garden State Plaza here in NJ and when I handed my credit card to the cashier, he somewhat timidly asked me to show some id. I must have said something like, "oh ok, my license?" as he started to almost apologize for having asked, due to store protocol. I was SO happy to oblige and thanked him for asking. I told him that it was a very good thing that he asked and that no one should be giving him a hard time or any grief over it. It was protecting me and in no way an inconvenience. He said that often people were annoyed by the request but I thanked him again and said that I wished it happened more often. I hope that it is indeed asked for more often these days, maybe not for the smaller, everyday purchases made in say, convenience stores or for gas or food but certainly for bigger ticket items like clothing, electronics, furniture etc.

Banks are required to give you your money back if it is stolen It's a federal law. Look it up. They will lie to you and tell you you need a police report. No you don't. I just went through it.. Don't let them lie to you. They acted like they knew nothing of this law. But I found out they did. Please. If someone steals your debit card. They bank is required to to refund your money if you report it in 60 days. NO POLICE REPORT NEEDED!!!!

I found out when my debit card was hacked; they bought 46.00 at one gas station in L.A. then a number of minutes later at another station 20+ miles away. Bank called me for fraud & shut my card down. Bank told me I'm not out & the bank isn't out either, the merchant is.

I was ripped off for $6k. Bank refused to refund because guy who did was dog sitting for us and found my checkbook in desk. He ripped out about 10 checks. Since I dont write checks i was surprised when i received them in mail. He had a big hard start becquse he dog sat for us for 9 days. I covered his room board as well as puppy charge. for my checks to come back from bank via mail. I really should have sued the bank and criminal, but police have yet to find him. He was my wife's cousins husband. Wife's cousin left him before this incident. The suspect would only write check in amounts under $200, once or twice a week till i finally notices. With evidence i had uncovered and what was still going thru bank system is when i discovered the full amount. Im white, and my wife's cousins husband is Black. Until he's caught I'll just consider it my Reparations account paid in full. Especially since my ancestors immigrated from Germany after WW2.

While my credit union is slow, I do get notices of debit card purchases the very next day. The DMV will give you and address for the registered owner if you pay them and give them a plate #. Find the crooks yourself if the cops won't. They'll come quick if you say you are gong to confront the scumbags.
