Mine came with the Samsung SSD. It's lightning fast on boot up, but I cleaned installed Win10 on arrival and upgraded all firmware(s) and there are a few. I also compared the built quality to other 15 inch laptops including Dell XPS and the X1 is by far the best more solid computer. Once you have it everything else looks flimsy. As a W- and later P-series user exclusively, I've been running the P1 Gen1 as my main mobile machine as a compliment to my P70 and P51, your review is excellent! I just got the new X1X Gen3 a couple of weeks ago, and it is phenomenal! The biggest difference between it and the P1 Gen1 is the new 4k display, which I can safely say is one of the best displays I've had on a ThinkPad. My P70 has the 4k non-touch, but it's not got any of the bells and whistles the X1X 4k display has.

A tip for those (like myself) that HATE fingerprints all over your laptops. Buy laminate SHEETS! They come in packs with multiple size choices. I ALWAYS laminate my laptops and the fingerprint issue is never a problem again. I even laminated the graphite surface on my XPS 15 around my keyboard and besides solving that horrible fingerprint issue on graphite, it looks like I spray painted a clear coat on it because it is so shiny looking, it always looks new. P.S.... I know everything about metals and graphite and there abilities to dissipate heat. There is NO heating problems so you don't have to worry about that.

Did they fix the trackpad? I went through and returned three Thinkpad X1 Carbons last year because the trackpads were unusable. There was delay, deadzone, and drift, like most windows laptops i've used in the last few years. I also found the nipple mouse was less responsive than the Thinkpad I used in 2006, do you find similar issue? I bought a mac, again, despite the keyboard issues, for the first time since 2002 after I decided to stop fighting windows trackpads. Chromebooks work well enough for me, they have spectacular trackpads, but I need to be able to run an IDE. ChromeOS native just isn't there, and Crostini doesn't have solid USB passthrough, yet. Hence the need for a full featured OS on bare metal. There don't seem to be any good solutions on the market, today.

Thank you John for posting your REAL experience. There are so many Thinkpad fanboys (especially on Reddit) that try to hide problems about Thinkpads in order to make it look like the "Perfect" laptop. Those same Thinkpad fanboys trash Apple's machines and never speak negatively about Thinkpads. When someone speaks up (like you) and tells about their REAL experience the ThinkPad fanboys downvote them and attack the complainer.

Lol I just bought one yesterday and OMG touching that material for the first time my reaction was "Oh dang that feels good" Coming from an HP ZBook 15 (2017 model) I got from work I'll sure as hell be using my own Thinkpad instead! The Zbook got a great keyboard ( or perhaps i've gotten used to it) but the Thinkpad oh dang people arent kidding when they say it's the best. I prefer mechanical keyboards but this non-mechanical on a thin and light is so awesome. just wish the backlight was just a tad more brighter but it's no dealbreaker. I'm a software engineer so the keyboard is high priority on my list of demands. Just need to switch the Fn and Ctrl in BIOS settings back to the position I'm used to instead of this ThinkPad traditional reversed way. I've taken this Thinkpad on my lap in bed and yea I notice the fans a bit of a sound that i got to get used to but when I place the laptop on a flat surface the fans sound way better. Theres a certain sound frequency difference that i can distingish (sensitive ears most people wont notice what I can hear) still no dealbreaker though as it isnt constant or annoying. It's my first Thinkpad ever so I'm not a red-nipple user however I like it way better than the black-nippe I've got on my HP ZBook ( that thing even broke off on the Zbook I dont know how.... ) the red-nipple on the Thinkpad is even rubberized so theres a good grip on it it feels great! the trackpad is precise and smooth no complaints. The image quality o my 4K panel here is gorgious and colors are really amazing without being over-saturated, brightness is better than what I came from so no complaints I even think its too bright at 100% if I didnt have dark mode on everything. The fingerprint reader works really well it's not like the ZBook (swipe finger) This one is place your finger and you're done, I think it works in combination of face recignition i'm not really sure but I have found no probs with it and in fact I now loathe having to enter a pin or password on my Zbook lol ( for some reason the swipe-fingerprint reader wont work anymore on the HP) in 2 days from now i'll be taking this baby to work and see how the wifi + bluetooth holds up. My HP ZBook sometimes looses bluetooth signal to my MX Master mouse due too all the other bluetooth and wifi signals in the air. So i'm hoping the ThinkPad has a better antenna strength or placement so that i wont have to reconnect my mouse everytime throughout the day. If I encounter any issues with my bluetooth signal i'll be sure to update this comment. The NVME SSD is QUICK! and My Laptop didnt come with a bunch of Lenovo bloatware, just Windows Pro bloatware. My unit is European, just mentioning it incase theres a regional difference I know pricewise theres a huge regional difference I dropped more money on this laptop than I ever did on any of the custom desktop PC's i've built in my life but theres no regrets yet. It's a thinkpad and it's meant to last longer than an average flashy fashion gadget (I'm looking at you iFruit folks). Eventhough it's no flashy laptop. Overall I love the look and feel of it. It's very low profile yet it screams " I MEAN BUSINESS!!! " the red led on the lid says it's a Thinkpad while the embosed THINKPAD branding is black and very low profile. I prefer it way more than the old white/silver/grey logo. However It would of been a nice touch if they could make it pulse on and off softly or even turned off completely as an option. Just my lil two cents on that. Anyway my little user-review first-impression that nobody asked for all written up in a coment section few people would care to read or thumbs up. lol But for the careful consumers out there I hope there's some use out of it. Cheers !!!!!!!!! SIDENOTE: If I dont update this comment or reply to my own comment about the bluetooth then assume that it is functioning properly in a very bluetooth/wifi congested environment. (man this keyboard just lets me type on-and on absolutely fantastic)

@@elinpelin17 Thank you :D I actually already set it at it's highest but i'm just being "picky" about it because I'm more used to the ZBook having a brighter backlight due to the keys being thinner. The Thinkpads backlight does the job good enough so it's all good :D

The next goal for manufacturers is to make a Tablet PC touchscreen with pen at full hd or greater and at least the mentioned i5 cpu, the nvidia max q thing, and at least 16 gb ram and 1tb ssd. How is it that every review of the x1 extreme says it's a great machine ... And I have it and it completely sucks. 3h battery life, 0.8ghz to 1.6ghz when battery powered, throttles at 80 degrees when you enable virtualization (and no fix in sight), the integrated graphics can't deliver a decent frame rate on the 4k panel in normal windows and you just need to deactivate it (not to mention a lot of other quality control issues)

What the... Sounds like you havent been looking at your settings lol I've been youtubing and typing comments and programming on (Better performace profile) for over 4 hours on battery and indicator says i've got 2 hour and 19 min remaining on the 4K panel. Granted i've got Dark Mode turned on on any application that offers the option/theme so not much white on screen if that makes any difference. CPU clocks are variable based on what task is being run up to a limit based on your battery saving profile. When I switch it to "Best Performance" I see it clocking up and down as if it was plugged in. Not the 1.6Ghz you claim it maxes out. Just be sure you adjust your Battery performance profile. On Better Performence I'm seeing the same as you but thats the whole point of that profile setting, on Best performance I dont see the same as you I have no performance issues. I cant say much about framerate issues on integrated graphics because i'm in hybrid mode and want to keep it that way but if you're having issues then I can already tell you might have an individual unit prob. NEXT UP i'm gonna enable virtuaization too and check it out since I need it enabled too :D Hope you can figure out the battery issue you got cause I can honestly say it's not normal

I've been waiting for laptop prices to come down for years. They're still ridiculous. Guess I will keep waiting.

I could undervolt my machine by 130mV. That's enough to give me up to 1200 points in Cinebench R15.
