His name is Philip Lynott. This is Thin Lizzy, Ireland’s greatest Rock n Roll export. Totally and completely underrated band. Not a metal band. Pure Rock n Roll heart and soul. Play the Cowboy Song at max volume for your neighbors. They will come to your door and ask “hey who was that?!! , they are awesome!!!!!”

'Cowboy Song', my favourite track from Jailbreak, my favourite Thin Lizzy album! Thank you Nick, this was a great marathon. The more I hear the later (80's) Lizzy music the more I like it. Thin Lizzy were a trio when 'Whiskey In The Jar' was recorded. Phil Lynott and Brian Downey on bass/vocals and drums, as they were for all their career, and Eric Bell on guitar. They were actually unhappy that it was released as a single, as they didn't believe it was representative of their sound at that time, but it was a huge hit. Eric Bell quit the band in 1973 and that's when Phil decided to go for a twin guitar line-up. Around 2010 I went to my local music venue at the time to see The Eric Bell Band. It was a little sad, very few people there, and Eric must have played 'Whiskey In The Jar' about five times. I'm sure it still pays many of his bills though, and he's still touring to this day.

I was talking to a guitar tutor once, and I asked him who was the most popular artist young guitarits ask to learn the parts or, thinking it wold be Hendrix, Zep etc etc but he daid "Thin Lizzy" I asked why and he daid because their songs are so wonderfully crafted and the guitar work, esp the solos, he said are just pure gems and they are so cool that its every boys dream to be able to play Lizzys stuff well. And that's decades after theyve gone.

Usually at their best live , especially between 75 to 78 , which was with Scott Gorham (melodic) , and Brian Robbo Robertson ( wah-wah / ripping solos!!)). Thanks so much , so glad you dig it ❤️

Gary Moore did one album with Lizzy, 1979s Black Rose. He was in the band permanent from fall 1978 to summer 1979, so it was a relatively short time. But he helped them out on several tours also, like the 1977 US tour with Queen, billed as "The Queen Lizzy tour":-) Thin Lizzy, as Gary Moore, huge in Europe, did not crack america properly. But over here in Europe, they are legends, right up there with the greatest.

I always wondered why listening to Lizzy was never monotonous, even after 45 years................then it dawned on me..............their stuff is so well written that it is never dull. The one positive thing about Lizzy not getting their 'due recognition is, we haven't been inundated with endless, endless 'high rotation' plays on radio etc.............I can't stand listening to Queen, Led Zep and many other bands due to the repetitive playlists you hear. Nick.........just play all their albums...............no bad tracks, there all brilliant 😉

I loved this so much Nick. Thin Lizzy were my favourite rock band growing up as a teenager. It may not be their best song, but Johnny is the one that gives me the most pleasure to listen to. Everything is so damn good in it. Towards the end, even horns are used to fill out the sound! Both solos are by Scottish guitarist Brian Robertson who later joined Motörhead. I saw them on their farewell tour in 1983 featuring the soloist you heard on Holy War, John Sykes, who later joined Whitesnake. In future, anything you feature from Black Rose will feature Gary Moore. The title track is EPIC!

Little story: I saw Thin Lizzy on their fair well tour (in Portsmouth, UK). I was just in the right place at the right time to find out someone who had a ticket couldn't go! They came out for their encore & everyone was calling for Whiskey In a Jar. Phil Lynott, rolled his eyes & huffed, then said, "No we're not gonna do F**king Whiskey in a Jar!" I guess there are some songs one gets fed up playing. Anyway, the crowd were so insistent, he relented & I saw Thin Lizzy play Whiskey in a Jar as an encore on their fair well tour!

1989, Aug 28, Maiden Voyage, we're gigging in Ybor... Set was a mix of our own material and covers. Cowboy Song was the last of our second set... fun to play but I'm the only guitarist so a lot to fill in, stomp-boxes octave-multiplexer, etc... Back then we always took a break after the second set. An acquaintance of mine with her gf Cindy came came up to me as we walked off stage... Cindy said "You know what? If you'd give me a roll, I'd definitely want be your cowgirl." A year later married her, thirty-four years, three children and still married.

Towards the end of Johnny, Brian Robertson let's rip and wow this guy had several run ins with Phil, you mentioned goose bumps but the aggression through those fast fingers of Brian, an absolutely brilliant guitarist, i think one of the best . Lizzy's music is fresh and ageless , rated No1 rock band by so many people , you never get tired of playing thin Lizzy because they were so brilliantly versatile.

The original Whiskey in the Jar is an old Celtic folk song possibly from pre 1700’s. The Scots know it as well as the Irish as thousands of Irish flew Ireland to Scotland when England imposed starvation policies on them. It was called the potato famine. Plus the Highland (Scottish) clearances imposed earlier on Scots, they burned down the Croft’s (cottages which made textiles and kept animals to survive) and forced the people out , many killed, to allow land barons who stole their farms, moved in sheep for their value. You thought the uk was a happy place? It’s a great song. Imagine it sung around a fireplace in a Bothy (small cottage) with music and whiskey in their jars.

I did notice thro the years Lizzy sometimes made political points in their lyrics, with a strong Celtic sound. A lot of those chords are of Celtic background.

Hi Nick, ... Just me doing a little catch up. Lol ... Love Thin Lizzy. Love Phil Lynott's solo work as well. This is a great marathon. Great choice of tracks. I like The Cowboy Song but after hearing it on "Live and Dangerous" that's the version I now prefer. Live is awesome ! Renegade is a great choice, the slower parts remind me of Dire Straits...with Phil's vocals so close to Mark Knopfler. [ which reminds me ... Solo track " The Kings Call " about the death of Elvis, features Mark Knopfler on guitar ] Really enjoyed this, thankyou. Byee Jim X

You've still only scratched the surface with Thin Lizzy. They really were a different band when they recorded their first three albums, and progressive psychedelic folk rock is not for everyone, even many fans of the band they became. For me, those albums represent the truest essence of who Phil Lynott was as a writer, and if he had become a poet instead of a rock star maybe things would have turned out differently. Vagabonds of the Western World is arguably Thin Lizzy's most adventurous and consistent album. Thin Lizzy could not have been much bigger in the UK. In some ways they were more important than Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple or Black Sabbath, because they were the band that was being played on daytime radio, that everyone could hear. The band that even kids who weren't into heavier music could appreciate, so their influence was wide ranging. When you look at the list of bands and artists who have covered Thin Lizzy songs, they cover more styles and genres than possibly any other hard rock band.

Whiskie In the Jar was recorded when Thin Lizzy were a 3 piece band. It is a Whiskie "cover" of a traditional Irish folk song. The word 'whiskey' comes from the Irish uisce beatha, meaning water of life. I was lucky enough to do security for them on the Renegade tour, great times.

I slept on Thin Lizzy for 20 years because i thought they were their later classic rock hits. I 2nd the request for Still In love with you live, but also request/suggest that you should really check out Black Rose. That song and album is from a period when Gary Moore was with the band. Also, if youre not familiar with Parisienne Walkways that is a great ballad that Phil and Gary wrote and performed together. There are some great live versions of it available on YT. It was one of the 1st songs to feature that signature sustain and with long fluid singing notes that would become synonmous with Gary's playing especially in ballads, like Empty Rooms and of course later Still Got The Blues.

Thank you for an awesome marathon! Lizzy is one of my all-time favourite artists ❤. Just a few minor corrections: Whiskey in the Jar is from their 3rd album (not 2nd) ”Vagabonds of the Western World” (1973) although it was released as a single in 1972 already. And ”Jailbreak” was their 6th album (not 7th). Anyway, more Lizzy, please!!! Songs like ”Wild One”, ”Emerald”, ”Massacre”, ”Waiting for an Alibi” and ”Roisin Dubh (Black Rose) A Rock Legend” would be great suggestions for another Lizzy marathon.

Have you reacted to any Wishbone Ash? They were also a notable earlier band prominently featuring dual guitar. Slightly progressive; hard to peg (which I think is a good thing). Very influential.

I saw them twice in the 70's, once with Brian Robertson, and once with Gary Moore.

This band did not get its due in the United States. If they were promoted. Properly, they would be superstars. I mean, look at your reaction.

If you don’t dive deep into King Crimson and ELP you are ignoring the two most influential ‘prog’ bands of the 2Oth century. I see more and more young folks discovering them with amazement. They created music from their gut. Fripp gave no quarter it was do or die. They forced the music out. They wanted to be different and emotive. They did it. Against a back drop of pop culture they stuck to it. Against the media, against all odds. Pioneers. Fighters. It wasn’t an easy ride. They made us listen. That’s the trick. They accomplished it.

Whiskey in the Jar is a traditional Irish tune so Thin Lizzy is not the "original". The Dubliners recorded it in a folk style about 1968 but it was probably written mid 17th Century.
