Timeless classic, I'm only 25 & I admore this song. This song will rightly go down in the mists of Gaelic legend, as will the bai's themselves.

Yes this is the work of Eric Bell on guitar. Perhaps one of the best opening riffs in rock. The solo is also stunning. Saw Lizzy the first time in 1974 with GM. He started playing his guitar off stage before the concert began! He did the Hendrix thing - playing "God save the Queen" with his teeth ( his fingers really). Became a lifelong fan of GM. RIP Gary.

Interesting to watch. This was a "promo video" - they are miming to the single version of "The Rocker." The guitar is Eric Bell. The miming to it is Gary Moore. There were other performances from this - two other songs that were broadcast.

Back when we made mtv ourselves with some super expensive equipment in our garage! ' I get my records and I rock out the store.' Love that!
@flooberbloob4 жыл бұрын
it's "I get my records at the Rock On stall" It's a reference to the Rock On stall at the Dandelion Market in Dublin in the 70's

It's nice to see the footage of Gary with the band but he didn't play guitar on this song. It was Eric Bell.
@mtbboy19938 жыл бұрын
+Steve Joynson gary is in this he was in Thin lizzy in 1974.Eric played on the original recording, but this looks like tv show footage, this is Gary, with the Peter Green Gibson Les Paul guitar,even the footage is in bad quality i can clearly see its Gary
@babcn8 жыл бұрын
It is Eric's playing and Gary is playing to playback.....I saw two incarnations of Lizzy live that summer in the Marquee Club in London, the first with Gary who stood in for a short period after Eric left the band, and a month or so later with Brian & Scott...both gigs were astonishing ....it would have been an amazing three piece if Gary had stayed, but a different career path ;-)

Yeah, I saw the Eric Bell lineup too - that was amazing and it was my fave lineup of the band. Then like you, I saw GM with a three-peice. I was standing right in front of GM - brilliant! :-)

True. It's a pity that the full album version of 'The Rocker' wasn't aired because Eric's extended solo is fantastic IMO.

True - but you don't hear them on this track. It's the album recording.

Eric bell killing it on what sounds like a poverty spec strat maybe one with a telecaster arrangement ? 3 instead of 5 way toggle ? I'm no axe buff sadly, but he truly rocks here, if he played more of this tone he would be up there in people's minds like clapton
@TheHumbuckerboy5 жыл бұрын
It is Eric's playing here but not the album version which contains Eric's amazing extended solo.
@AnthonyMonaghan5 жыл бұрын
Only it's not Peter Green's guitar, and you can hear it. Listen to the original album version with the extended solo. Eric Bell is most likely playing a Stratocaster. The phasing/flanging is a cheap gimmick. As much as I love this song, that guitar sound always bothers me.

i like this song, but for me, the true masterpiece of vagabonds of the western world is the title track, and i know many many other folks hold that to be true. i think a lot of people here the tura-lura-lura part in the beginning and then decide to fast-forward or rewind the tape (were talking 1973, folks!) , missing out on the best song they ever did. the title track is criminally overlooked. check out "my favourite 20 thin lizzy songs" on dailymotion and youll see there are others who hear the genius in that song
@newavatar29476 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with you.I also skipped over the track because I thought the beginning sounded like an Irish jig.Im so happy you turned me on to this song.Best band ever!

Lyrically and musically, they just went other places. Visually, I dunno. It's a cool vid, a little atypical as it features Mr. Moore in TL in '74.
