You're so right about the greed and profit emphasis. Most hobbies in general are framed in that "you have to buy more" way here in America. Once you get into smaller communities, most people don't think or act like that. The people I buy/trade with, they're usually just regular folks who don't have all the bells and whistles, they just want to talk to other planty people and share things that make them happy. The influencers definitely paint a different picture but its pretty accurate for how a lot of larger accounts behave in the space. Lots of people are in fact in it for the money and not the love of plants, but theres still a strong community who don't do transactions of any kind. Just free plants and good vibes

Yep Europe is way more like that which is also why prices are way cheaper for rare plants. People want to share a hobby and make a little money to maybe buy another plant they like but not really to make a big profit. Some Americans wanted to tell me my Monstera thai platinum couldn't possibly be one because I didn't spend 500 on a tiny cutting. I just said not the whole world revolves or works the same way and that plant prives are way cheaper here. I bought a philodendron gloriousum tricolor from Germany for 199 including shipping. I mean it IS the only place I know seeling at that price but if it quacks like a duck, moves like a duck and looks like a duck it likely is a duck. My thai platinum looks so different from my normal thai (btw 11 euros from a big chain shop)

In India we do not usually use branded growing medium . The soil is amended with organic constituents like mustard cake , cow dung compost, leaf compost, neem fruit compost ,perlite , sand, cocopeat etc....but the main component is soil.

I agree with you completely. I bet you purchased Miracle Grow. Everyone I know who used MG soil said they had a gnat infestation afterwards. My grandmother used to have hundreds of plants and only used the dirt from her yard and manure. I used to grow plants the same way for many years but now I purchase cheap yard soil and perlite, I also add regular cedar mulch to my snake plants and pothos.

I wish we could just use dirt from outside for houseplants in the uk! It would be full of worms, beatles, bugs, and also be way too heavy for tropical plants. Fungus gnats are often in the soil of plants we get from supermarkets/ big box stores here too - the nurseries use dense, moisture retentive soil that gnats love. We have to repot them asap to avoid gnats spreading in our homes 😭 Also, definitely miracle grow with the fungus gnats 😂 they're well known for it and so long as it sells, they're not going to try to fix it -_-

Unfortunately, we cannot just go and grab soil from outside, because it is not suitable for tropical plants, also we will be bringing pests indoors. I used to use soil based mixes, but it was killing my aroid plants by root rot, because the soil compacts and suffocates roots if it is in the pot. Soilless mixes help to keep the mixture airy and it does not compact and become hydrophobic for a long time. In addition to that, even if you use normal soil, you still need to fertilize the plant, because soil loose nutrients faster than you think, especially in such small volumes as a plant pot, and you wont notice it for a long time but the plant will start to grow slower and slower, and in the end it will start showing physical damage. Nowadays I have most of my aroids in pon as semi hydro self watering systems, it makes life so much easier . Hope that helps. I live in Germany.

Your soil based mix in reality is peat based mix. Peat is organic and starts rotting when wet. Normal soil is mineral based. Clay, sand, gravel. Just like pon you are using. You can go outside, find some rocks and grow plants in that just like you do in pon.

It seems like a ton of money poured into rooms for speciality soils. They sort of all look the same and their original personality is thrown out the window and everything has to look like the other persons plants or plant room.

I am an American and I agree with you 1000% we are consumer driven!! But having said that, we do have reasons on some things. 1; the soil. Yes it is everywhere but it is NOT all good! I used to live in the north east, up around New York City and the soil in my yard was perfect! That sandy loam we all want. I moved down to the south east to get away from the snow and our soil here is very, VERY hard, very rocky and very clay! When I want a vegetable garden I had to put in raised beds and fill them in because the soil was not good to grow tender veggies in. For my house plants I do have to buy soil, but it is a huge bag of regular old potting mix. I then will add anything else I want to it. I don't buy these small bags of pre-mixed stuff. Yes we do have to keep buying fertilizer, but I just a new bottle for $12 on amazon and that bottle will last me a couple of years. So I see this as a minimal cost. Some people, from the UK as well, like to use some really expensive stuff, but it is a matter of choice, not necessity. But you are 100% correct! They want you to keep buying! And sometimes that aggravates me too! But you just have to learn what you can afford and what works for you. If you ever moved to the states, you would not have to spend a lot if you move some where with good soil. Florida maybe. There are tons of commercial growers down there and many youtubers as well. So it might be easier to grow things with local soil. But Arizona, maybe not. That is very rock hard and sandy-ish and can get packed down and hydrophobic. It would be a matter of where you choose to live. That is what is so great about my country. We have it all. Your theory about the fungus gnats is probably spot on, however I don't think you actually saw the larvae unless you have a microscope. They are that tiny. But it is a huge issue here. I use a systemic pest control and they are not an issue for me. And the container I have now, I have had for a few years. So even though we have to buy these things, they are not an overwhelming expense. Not everything is TC here. And here the plants that are TC are usually cheaper not more expensive. The people who are paying to import these tc plants are usually the growers and sellers who plan to turn them around, make more and sell them. The plant market is starting to calm down from the days of $5-10K plants! Only the growers will pay that top dollar anymore, and only if they think they can make a profit. As far as picture perfect plants go, Photoshop my friend!! Photoshop! Need I say more?? Yep, Gardening here is outdoor plants generally.

The reason you dont get fungus gnats there is because they do not thrive in your country. Some animals are just not thriving in your climate, but they do thrive in our climate, which is why they breed everywhere, out of nowhere. The soil bags usually are sitting in warehouses here and these gnats just breed in them and feed on nutrients and fungi, and these bags get sold like that, no one is doing it to trick us, because even if we make our own substrate without soil, they still come from outside.

And you are right about fungus gnats. They thrive in the soil used in Europe and USA, they eat the fungus that grow on organic matter at a certain state of decaying. Our soil use a lot of composted wood chips and sphagnum that is exactly at this stage. Native soil usually contain organic matter in a more advanced composted state, already digested several times by worms.

Hello! The soil most gardeners use in the US is the soil from the ground. Soil enhancement such as manure, bone meal etc. is usually purchased. Many don't have the type of soil in their yards that are proper for food or flowers, the soil could be too sandy or too much clay, it all depends. Americans are aware of composting. There are many black American gardeners who go the course of their ancestors. Just type black gardeners or farmers in KZbin. Many go the organic way. And no you are not obligated to buy all that stuff. I have a garden and we use the soil on our property. Houseplant influencers on KZbin can be a bad example because you see the rare hoya or aroids and everyone wants one. During the pandemic many have gone coo coo over these plants competed with each other on social media, especially with the extended unemployment and stimulus checks with so many out of work and needing a hobby! I got rid of fungus gnats with apple cider vinegar, dish soap and banana peel as many have done. Fungus gnats come on bagged produce like onions for instance and are common here. Gnats are a mosquito variety and common. Don't let what you see on social media influence your opinions of all Americans. Younger influencers take a bit of a radical way of caring for their plants than older ones. They're more impatient... Thanks for sharing!

I'm not an american, i'm french. I totally get some of the weird things you talk about, but sometimes we can't really help it. I live in a small city apartment, the plants are already taking a lot of space so if I need some charcoal, I can't buy a cheap bag for barbecue, I will never use it entirely, i would prefer buying a smaller and more expensive bag for plants. I would like to use native soil, but the closest clean patch of forest is pretty far away, plus it's way too organic and rich for most houseplants. My parents came from USSR. They had the same hobbies as in the west but they did it without availablr capitalistic products. So I know how to do with scratch, but the fact is, it's usually more difficult in my environment.

Capitalism has a way of elevating quality while chaining you to a corporation. I love hearing a more practical perspective. I want to ask about soil 💫respectfully💫: I feel like fungus gnats have to be a byproduct of the way we manufacture or process soil in the US. I also know that where I live, I might want to bűrŋ my house down if I saw three flies. For this of you using "road soil", does it have bugs? You don’t get to see it but more seasoned gardeners and those who grow food actually do use soil. We still use some amendments. Most of us actually only use fertilizers monthly only during the growing season..newer growers are more prey to the marketing…it is actually becoming more transparent that fungus gnat eggs lay dormant in the package soil..the tissue culture grown plants look perfect at first until you get it home..they are not as hardy as non tissue culture which is why those plants take more effort to grow and tend to fail..which also fuels profit because you think you did something wrong and buy more plants..we also have distinctive separation between “conventional” and non GMO because of industry whistleblowers that exposed how the chemical used to modify plants are harmful to us and the environment..lots of lawsuits happened..it’s a mess

The soil is a very interesting point. I’ve seen the same thing on some videos from India - the soil they use just looks like straight dirt. But I always attribute it to the climate. Here in the Canadian prairies, we have to grow strictly indoors. Which means less sun, less heat, less natural predators for pests. And the humidity outside in the summer peaks at 40%. Inside my house because of my aquarium is around 40-60 though. But if I used outdoor soil I’d be afraid of root rot for sure and also pests. I don’t buy the expensive potting mixes but I do buy bagged soil mixes and add amendments. But it seems like we have to spend more money to give our plants what they need because the environment is so different from what they’d receive in nature. I don’t usually have a problem with fungus gnats though!

im from south america and is funny how gringos make their stuff feel like is the norm and make us everyone else feel like we're doing stuff wrong when apparently everyone is doing the same thing EXCEPT them lmaoo. We do garden stuff here the same as you, and only the "boutique" stores who put their names in english or sell their stuff overpriced are doing it "americsn style"

I got into indoor plants during the lock downs. I bought a plant and did some research on it and was exposed to all of these different indoor plants. I was hooked! And some of the videos I saw when I started this plant journey did not make sense to me at all, as someone who owns many outdoor plants and has worked with outdoor plants for years. All these soils people use, what’s the need for chunky soil? Makes no sense to me. All the things you mentioned in this video, I was also thinking. And the repotting videos, why do you throw the soil away?? And why buy expensive soil when you can buy a large bag that is very effective and cheap? And what’s up with all these poles people are always doing? Almost every single plant is in a pole. No thank you. I don’t have any fungus gnats cause I only use the soil that the plants come in or the soil I use for outdoor plants. I never buy the fancy, chunky soils. No Gracias. Now I love capitalism. I see nothing wrong with it. If you make a great product or service , then good for you, people will buy it. If you don’t, at least you had a chance to showcase it. Love your video and thank you for sharing your thoughts many people don’t speak about cause they’re too afraid. God bless you! From El Paso TX

This is so funny 😂😂yes America is all about capitalism and everything has a price on it. Unfortunately, some of us can’t just go outside and get natural resources to be honest and it’s a shame.!
