I’ve been driving trucks now since 2005. Got out of the Marine Corps in Oct 2004. I started out working for union companies that paid well per hour but I’ve been laid off 3 times since then. I now work for non union which has its own problems but no fear of layoffs. I’ve been driving a tanker local since 2011. Gave up on pension and now put 60% of my pay into savings and investments. 700k net worth, paid off house, two paid off cars, no debt at all. I just recently put in for VA disability, haven’t been approved yet. Long story short, don’t rely on pension and union. You handle it yourself.

Thank you for your service.. I'm doing the same on putting in for disability.. drug my feet for 30 yrs wished I hadn't.. Listen, young active duty. Don't wait to put in for your disability and put everything in your military records. Don't try to hide anything if you get hurt. Put it in your records have your own copies.. Therefore, later, you can get disability if need be on an injury happening on activity.

Logan, first of all, thank you for your service. 🇺🇸 I’ve been in the LTL trucking industry for 26 years. I can tell by watching your videos and listening to what you have to say, I can tell that you’re a survivor. ABF is a great company. This is normal for our industry. There will always be highs and lows of freight volumes. But find a way to survive, while putting your time in. Keep building your seniority. You’ll be glad you did. We’ve all been through it. Trucksafe!

I feel your pain I’m low guy in Southern California ABF just 1 year, I’ve been laid off already, back at work,it seems very slow, but one thing about life nothing remains the same, what goes up must come down and vice versa, the Bible says, and it came to pass, nothing comes to say, hang in there things will get better, do your thing with the Military, I’ve been in the LTL industry for over 30 years, I left a good job with OD.. to come to ABF because of the Great Benefits. Stick it out 😊

"Cutting in line" is a perk of higher seniority because they've already been through what you're experiencing. They've done their time and paid their dues to earn the security they have. Seen it when my Dad was a road driver at Roadway before Yellow. I'm high seniority at my UAW job and had to put my time in but you’ll never get what ABF offers anywhere else. Do your time and stick it out.

Brother if you're going to go anywhere and you want to stay in the LTL industry you should really look at Estes Express lines. There's a reason they have been in business for over 90 years and never had a layoff. Plus you can transfer your seniority to any terminal in the network and never miss a beat. Linehaul will be at .80/ mile come January.

I’m a 25 year Teamster. I spent about 15 years in the LTL sector. It’s unfortunately the nature of the beast. It goes up and then slow down. Ride it out. Don’t forget about the pending election and the political climate. It’s a definite factor in business slowing down. I’m in the construction business now and we’re slowing down after about a 15 year run. It will come back . Be patient, I’ve been through it and I wouldn’t change anything. Tough times don’t last.

UPS Teamster here feeling your pain. The down cycle will turn. Covid led to a rush of trucks on the road. Many of the smaller operators will have no choice but to pull them off. The supply and demand balance will shift and people will need safe and dependable drivers/companies to run their freight. ABF will be there ready to go! Don’t quit! Hustle a bit for the next few months and you will be laughing about this whole situation before you know it. Thanks for the great honest content! Stay safe out there!

Definitely hard times right now I was at yellow Freight for 6 years as a P&D driver/ dock worker before they closed. I quit a couple of months before they closed because the writing was on the wall. Did construction for the summer and then got laid off from that once the jobs ran out. So I went back to driving I wanted to go back to LTL P&D but the market just isn’t there for it right now no LTL’s in my area have been hiring. I wound up finding a good job at CPC logistics as a peddle driver delivering to Walgreens stores. So far been consistent only got dropped off the schedule one day so far due to not enough freight. I just hope this all passes soon enough life has taught me that Freight and construction are extremely economy dependent and cut throat. At least you have a back up plan keep your head up driver!

Once the other carriers raise rates more customers will go back to ABF. All good advice especially staying with this company. It’s absolutely one of the top carriers to work for. You've invested all this time into ABF already, it would suck to throw it all away when it would take just as long or longer to get back to a decent level of pay/benefits/schedule at another job. As for Colorado, before you apply somewhere you should definitely take the time to talk to local drivers about what runs you could expect and what it's like in the winter. The wind and ice through Wyoming to get to SLC is no joke, and when I-80 gets shut down you can expect to spend a decent chunk of your day throwing chains to get across I-70. A lot of companies will specify in the job listing if mountain driving is required or not, but you can expect lower pay for the flat land jobs. I work for another LTL company and I was lucky enough to be able to transfer to Colorado during a change of operations, which is the only way I would have ever considered moving here. I get my LTL pay and mountain views, but with the seniority to avoid seeing those mountains up close.

Feel for you. Came straight out active duty . Been an o/o over 1 years still surviving in this market. Cash truck and keep cost of things as low as possible. One thing I learned these people don't care your a vet or not. When it comes to business it's pretty much about the numbers. Your just a number on the board. Your time is about to run out. Have another option or be stuck. Whether you need to take another mini deployment to get you some extra cash or go apply to be an Amazon driver or something. Good luck.

By the grace of God Ups was hiring when Freight was bought out by TForce so i was able to leave and become a feeder driver. I still have moments where i feel like i wasted so much of my time over there. Maybe you should do the National guard thing so you can get away from trucking all together for a while. Hopefully it'll get better by then. It's tough when all you want to do is work and provide and the works not there.

I had 19,urs with Yellow and then Holland as part of YRC. You have call back rights if you catch a layoff. If it happens then go drive somewhere until you get called back. I Ran Line haul extra board for Yellow and YRC for 11 yrs and worked City for Holland for 8 yrs. We rN on a modified wheel board and it was similar. I took about 4 yrs until I could get out reliably. You may, also get a chance at a bid run which would be a set run everyday. I know it seems sketchy but you are close to the turning point now.mif you can tough it out a little bit longer it will start to pay off. Freight is fickle.,it goes hot and cold depending on a number of different factors. Every year you hang in it does get better.

Didn't realize it at the time but they abused the sh#$t out of me constantly going back and forth on the worst stretch of Int.80 over the winter time. Spring came and I never saw SLC again lol. New contract got negotiated and I was excited! Little did I know it meant I got laid off, womp womp. It was an opportunity, went and did regional OTR, real trucking, not pansy LTL fake trucking, learned a lot, and I learned I was not passionate about trucking. Business is bad for all CO’s and many CO’s that have been in business for decades are going out of business. ABF is doing what they have to do to stay in business. I retired from ABF, but when I was new I got laid off a few times but hung in there and was well worth it. ABF is one of the best CO’s any truck driver can work for. Since you mostly work from Thursday through the weekend try and get a part time job for the beginning of the week even if it’s not driving. Business is so bad every where in trucking. Keep your foot in the door at ABF because thing will get better in time. But I know you got to do what you got to do to make money to live.

I retired from trucking after 43 years on the road. I had 11 years with cf. I got a small pension which I’m grateful for. I wish I could have retired with them. I also worked for yellow and ups. ABF is top shelf as long as they use you. It’s a tough row to Ho getting seniority

So far we haven't slowed at all. No hog board, loads are fcfs based on location and hos, no seniority preference. Freight waves says freight volume is seasonally the same yoy. Yet there are more trucks and drivers so rates have fallen. Most saying cpm company drivers is the way for now.

Worked for Yellow for a year and a half until the doors closed, I was forced to “other options” I went the OTR route. I was on that hog board over here and it sucks, I’ll say this before I go any further, there is nothing out here that compares to LTL, I wanna put that emphasis on what your thinking. Go to the truck stops, talk to drivers that are willing to speak to you about any company you are researching, flood your KZbin with information on other companies. I approached my decision with the question of “what industry within this industry has the most guaranteed freight” I ended up making the decision to go with the food industry and then looked at companies within that market. I would not jump ship if I were you, I’d be prepared for options but make sure you have a way back in, talk to your Union Rep, your BA , just incase you are laid off to make damn sure all of your bases are covered so that if you are laid off and then recalled that you come back with the same and or better seniority position. All the best brother !!!

First like to thank you for your services as to serving, you seem new but know the game. ABF is a great company but they at times have there ups and downs. Right now trucking is really not good industry as myself I had a issues when I came back to work and notice some changes. By you being in the guard and your hours are reduce you do qualify for your unemployment. Guard should had let you know about applying. If you have't then you should. As for trucking its not gonna be any better or back maybe to somewhat normal until after the elections.

I was told the same thing from tje teamsters 10urs ago, I got screwed by the company and the teamsters. Double and triple verify your time if you go the border. Other then that it's the the trucking life. Union driving is one of the worst driving I ever did in my 27yrs of trucking. Good luck Thank you for your service

In 2011 I quit USF Holland in Buffalo, 16 year teamster and it all went to shit. Yellow bought us and the pension went to penny's on the dollar, we voted for pay cuts and pension cuts to keep that company alive and they pissed the money away. at some point the dream is gone and its time to move on. it wasn't just Yellow died it was every company they owned, Gone. some of those guys stayed hoping until the very end. never do that.

I did fleet fueling at yellow Buffalo and seen the decline in fuel months before the surprise-ish closing. I agree loyalty is a thing of the past. I went to FedEx freight ltl and it was the same nonsense sitting by the phone waiting for it to ring.

If things don’t work out with abf come to estes we’re paying just as much and if ur out of Dallas they got freight and you won’t ever get layed off x board 5 days out you’ll make good money your first year.. if you started at estes 3 years ago in Dallas you would have a 650 mile turn home everyday or any day start you want on x board lol we’re at 85 cents a mile x board come January and bids 80

Southwest Teamsters here, drive Ready mix. I’ve been working for the same company for 27 years, but I’m only 52 years old and frankly I don’t think working until I’m 58 years old just to get the pension is worth it. We have a PEER 84 plan here. And we only started the pension back in 2003. My plan is to leave this employer at the age of 55 and take 54.5% of my pension and go do a job that I want to do until I’m ready to retire when I’m 62 years old. My motto is you can make more money, but you can’t make more time. While my plan sounds counterintuitive, the beating that my body has takin over the years will be well worth getting out when I can and still healthy. We have a paid off house, I put 17% into my 401(k) which the company does not match and I have two Roth IRA‘s that are funded so yes the union has been good and this job has been terrific,. just remember the pension is no guarantee you’re better off saving money on your own and maxing out your own savings and living debt-free.

In my opinion use the time you have and need to put other things in place. Having a Union Job has it perks and also its drawbacks. I say that because I myself was low on the seniority board with UPS and after 5 years just decided to walk away in search of what I thought would’ve been better at the time and now I’m somewhat regretting it. Just do what you can do and try your best to stick it out. Because if I can be blessed with another opportunity to get back in to a Union job or more precisely where you’re at with ABF or UPS I’m definitely not gonna let it get away from me again

From my understanding, when yellow bankrupt, abf tried to raise prices to match carriers like OD and fedex but it backfired causing lost of business
