I miss when graveyard was actually a graveyard and banned zone was a definitive thing. I recently returned and took a look at some cards from 2008-2021 and MAN, swear to god you don't know how many different cards I read that could bring back monsters and spells from the banned zone and also it took me a fair amount of time to understand why cards that put monsters from your deck to your graveyard were now OP and considered meta, apparently now the graveyard is more like your side-hand, and since duels ends in 2 turns you better off excavate your deck and put the good stuff in your "GY". As for banned zone, now it seems to be what graveyard was back in the day. Correct me if I'm wrong. At this pace, in 2024 Konami will have to create a new zone called "really banned" because it'll be so easy to exploit the banned zone as it currently is with the graveyard.

i am on the fence about that i play dangers alot and link monsters and i feel that special summons should have a cost to them rather than just free monster spamming so yeah back then it was rare to do a special summon but at least there really wasnt a cost since you didnt lose that much advantage but once you play dangers its a real gamble if you get it on the field

@@evandeland6867 Most special summons do come with a cost. If a card that just says "Special Summon this card" it would be broken. The cost can range from the simplest (An example being Cyber Dragon) to the more complex (Gate Guardian or Dark Sage)

That's why we have special rules when we play with friends. No link, no (or limited) XYZ and it's considered a d!ck move to take a deck where you can finish in one turn. It just takes the fun out of the game when each game takes about 3 turns max.

As a magic player of the olden days who never got big into yugioh a lot of this still hits so many notes lol the most painful one is the trade binder. nobody is gonna trade cards anymore at least not without checking prices first zzz i used to love doin that back in high school! Maybe I am a little late but maybe this still helps you. Master Duel got me back into the game after about 10 years of not playing at all. I learned organically how the new stuff works and hey maybe your favorite archetype from way back when received new support that makes it playable nowadays.

Master Duel is a free game and it's really good. I suggest you try it and play the solo mode, it will teach you about the new summoning mechanics. Also there's now a casual online mode so you can play without losing points.

Everyone just plays the same exact thing, not out of Meta, but out of that there just isn’t much there. We used to have dozens of different themed decks with all their own merits and flaws… The modern Yugioh is just bad. Magic the Gathering still carries on because it always has a sense of variety no matter what they put out.

The thing about special summons is actually true. Once, when you special summoned a blue eyes dragon it was a really special summon. Now you can just summon 4 cards a turn, fuse them and then summon 4 other different cards.

An example would be some beast deck where really, you only summon 1 card to tribute it and chain it 5 times so you can get all those cards as xyz material for an effect. So yeah you might go from 1 card to 1 card despite 6 cards being used, but you now have 6 negates or banishes per turn or something.

Admittedly, that was somewhat early in the game's lifespan, but there were still early formats where the graveyard was just that, the graveyard.

Probably one of the funny things when I was playing Yu-Gi-Oh as a kid was how simple the rules were, even if we only knew the rules through the anime, as well as trading for cards that you just thought looked cool. I remember showing up to duel and having a somewhat decent deck, few weeks later and a couple packs openned and I'd turn up with my deck being even better and you could surprise people. Now you can tell people what you're running and they can list off every card you have in the deck.

Locals in all cars games have trades. I’ve played yugioh, mtg sand Pokémon and lot of people are still up for trades. Just go based on tcg value usually unless a card is in high demand

In my locals, back when I still played (admittedly, this was 10 or so years ago), it was the other way around. People didn't want to sell their cards, they only wanted to trade. I don't know what the scene is like now, but back then, not a lot of people were willing to sell. We had one guy who was a dedicated seller. He had a massive collection that he constantly added to and he only sold cards. He encouraged people to give or sell him any cards they didn't want anymore and then tried to sell them at a profit and, for the most part, he succeeded at that. But aside from that one guy who made it his sidegig, virtually no one else was interested in selling. Only trading.

Trying to get into Duel Master or whatever it's called might be alright. I just started playing again a couple of days ago. I spent about $20 on boosters and actually managed to make a deck that's actually scored me a decent number of wins - in low rank admittedly. I have a hard time remembering what all my cards do sometimes, and occasionally someone will show up with a 20 card combo that melts my brain... But by an large the game will help walk you through when certain abilities can be activated and counters for things your opponent does. There's also a comprehensive tutorial that brings you up to speed on the game's old *and* new mechanics that has helped a ton. It's not the same as when I used to go to local tournaments as a kid, but it's helped me get back into the game after 15 years.

@@Syenthros my recommendation for anyone wanting to get back in by playing master duel. Look for a decent tier deck you like and focus on building it along with some staple cards. Once its like 90ish percent done just keep playing and don't be shy to read. Soon you understand your deck and how other cards play. In the meantime spend gems on other nice packs that have good cards and think very carefully before using UR or SR crafting gems

I can relate, I just started playing Master Duel too. At bronze it was simple enough to follow, and I was actually matched with people around my skill level. Then, all hell broke lose when I got to silver. I get that the season just started which means players are climbing up ranked again, but it’s so overwhelming. Playing like 5-7 cards is considered normal. Decking building also gets confusing.

Honestly, as a new player, this is my issue with these XYZ summons, I'm just waiting for them to do their first turn while they shuffle through their whole deck 6 times to summon 5 monsters to get 2 badass monsters on the field while my ancient gears deck give me 3 boss monsters in 1 hand and 2 useless spell cards. so all I can do is wait for them to murder me because having 4 boss monsters is apparently too much for my 20 card deck to handle. I loved Yu-Gi-Oh as a kid. Watched all the anime, had practically every card from the OG and both duel disks (Battle City and Oricelcose). Back then it was simple and fun and relied on skill, balance of cards and luck of the draw. @@MaxAndersonn depends on your playstyle. If you like going for control, try out “Shaddolls” or “Virtual World”. If you like spamming monsters try “Salamangreat “or “infinitracks”. If you like rituals “drytron” is the best deck currently. Though those are all pretty expensive, the cheapest deck currently is “appliancer” it’s just unga bunga beat down. “Virtual world” is probably the cheapest deck that can compete at a competitive level. Most cards in the deck are like 50 cents each. There’s only one card that’s $10. Though the best advice I can give is do research and choose a deck that you like. I currently play two different decks, “Time Thief” and “Live Twin”/“Evil Twin” those are what I have the most fun with.

@@hyp3r-systems838 There is indeed a deck called "Super-Heavy Samurai" that consists just of Monstercards. But in general Spells are still strong and used unlike Trap-Cards. The only trap-cards that are used are ones who can be activated from the Hand, like Infinite Impermanence, because setting a card for the next turn is "too slow" and the opponent could easily crush it there, too. Also there are now Monsters that fulfill the role of Traps, so called "Hand-Traps", line Ash Blossom or Ghost Ogre, that also are activated directly from the Hand so you can use them even while our opponent goes first.

It's only confusing if you stop at some point. If you stayed you watch the game grow gradually... and kinda get used to the bullshit. But it is honestly not that confusing. Decks nowadays kinda point you towards a strategy so some of the busy work is already done for you. I wish I could accurately describe the wide range of emotions that went through my head when I first saw a pendulum monster. I dropped out of Yugioh a little before 5D's started and since then everything new just makes me long for the old days. Once I got back I made it a point to build a deck that fits more in line with what I know. Synchro summoning probably being the last system that made perfect sense as it was just tribute summoning that was just a tad specific. XYZ monsters also had that specific star count but also contained a Master's thesis of a description that took half the game to read and, at least in my case, usually had to be reread before every attack and spell/trap card activation in case of some bullshit invincibility. Pendulum monsters contained even more words because they doubled as both monsters and spell cards and I refused to use them on the spot and I can't even begin to understand why anyone though Speed dueling and Link summons where a good idea

Keeping track of at least 25 card effects just fries my brain. There's something to be said for keeping short and sweat. Mirror force, when your opponent attacks every monster they control is wiped out. De-Spell, negate the activation of a Spell card. Pot of greed, draw 2 cards. So on and so on. This is specifically a me problem, but I'm sure I can't be the only one out there like this.

No it wasn't. Even if they never would have released pendulum and Links, the game would be as BS as it is today. Yugioh has the biggest problems for a cardgame in terms of powercreep. No resource costs (like energy/mana), no limit on cards being able to be played per turn and no set rotations. No resource costs makes you able to to whatever the f*ck you want turn 1, as long as you have the right combo pieces same thing with no summoning sickness and limit of cards being able to be played No set rotations means, that the new sets HAVE to be better than the old ones in terms of effects, or there's no selling point to them. Yugioh was always designed in a way, that it was gonna spiral out of control. In that regard, it was always a "flawed" game

The writing was always on the wall that this was going to be where we end up. ..... That said I still play Master Duel.

@@ShamblesTCG Well it was designed around a tribute cost to cards. The issue is that they kept printing card after card that bypassed the cost. I kind of wonder how the game would've looked it they adapted the battle city rules from the manga. -Special Summoned monsters cannot attack on the turn they are summoned. -You may only active/set 1 spell/trap from your hand each turn. It would still probably be a mess without rotation. I don't even get the design philosophy. Any sane designer would split up the cards so the high ATK beater wasn't on the same card as the protection effect and the disruption. A good design would print high state monsters for fighting and then make you keep the utility cards on either spell or small low stat creatures.

Idk, I feel like it's definitely gotten to a weird point now where cards are just too good and half your deck is making sure you don't lose on your first turn if your opponent goes first. Turn 1 was always an advantage for sure but at least it took a couple of turns to set up so the other person had a solid chance to set up too. I honestly just think it's a bit too hard and fast at the moment, to the point that 20k life points would probably only give it a couple of extra turns, and kick all the other old cards while they're down too

@@dantegallardo1974 Back in the ancient days of Yugioh people would fear back row during battle phase cause of traps like mirror force, magic cylinder or Sakarestsu Armor. Not everyone had access to MST cause there were no commons of it back then that came with every structure deck.

To be fair it's not that difficult once you get the hang of it (and i stopped playing before synchros and came back after links...it was kind of shocking how much it's changed.)...every summoning mechanic is pretty much straight forward, problem is how much bullshit there's in the game now where you start a game and might as well just get yourself some coffee in the meantime while the other guy does his first turn and hope you get a chance to actually get yours... Still...the basics of the game are not that much complex. I would love for them to delete pendulums and make as if they had never existed in the first place...now that's a piece of trash mechanic.

I miss having fun drawn out duels. I haven’t played since about ‘03, and I’ve recently been getting back into the game. I built myself a pretty basic god card deck out of the structures out right now and went to go check out some casual locals at the card shop in my town. Got ftk’d twice, and then the next guy otk’d me a few turns in. I’ve decided to just stick to playing with my coworkers now, had a duel the other night that went on for about 2 hours with a friend of mine using a deck he made around ‘05, just talking and laughing, building tension around trying to play our heavy hitters.

Easy: I normal summon "Lord of D." and activate "Flute of Summoning Dragon". Now you just needed to have lucked out into having drawn those cards as well as two viable dragons. Usually you didn't, because besides Sangan and Last Will there weren't a lot of searchers around. Those two were the big "combo cards" to allow me to summon my BEWD and REBD. And until I could play them, I had to stall out.
