I’d say my number one minimalism rule is to never buy anything that I didn’t ever think of before. When I see something and think “omg, I can totally use that for x purpose”, I pause and ask myself if I’ve ever missed this item before. If yes, I might get it. If no, I definitely won’t get it and observe if I’ll miss it in the future. If I actually keep on thinking about it, and keep on coming across situations where I’d use it, I’ll maybe get it. Works so well. I save so much money and space without these things I don’t actually need. It doesn’t work super well with things I can use up, like things to eat. But for the most part!!

I felt that way about one of those hard boiled egg makers (the dome like one) never thought i wanted one, then one was on sale about 8 bucks, I was like I could use that, is less than a sandwich in some places. Boy was I wrong I've used it almost daily lol so 🤷

I am amazed at how similar my outlook is to yours. So much common sense. I understand your decision to leave KZbin but I have to say that I'll miss "seeing" you. I'm sorry to see you go. I think you've had a very positive impact on young girls and women alike. The fact that you take pride in your home, that you love being a wife and that you respect your husband, and that you love being a mom is such a positive role model. It's taken a lot out of you, but thank you for making these enjoyable videos.

I really like your commitment to fair working conditions with the items you buy; I encourage you to co sider how this translates to spices (like with the meat you buy). The spice trade can be very grim, and responsibly sourced spices are a smart choice. The flavour might be similar, but they last longer and you can trust they were grown and harvested fairly.

I’ve found the more kids I have (pregnant with our 4th) the more I have naturally inclined to become a minimalist. I don’t want to waste time on things and rather invest in my family. We always, always buy on sale! Thanks for inspiring us with what you’ve learnt along the way! You’ll be missed here on KZbin!

Absolutely! Part of it is that once you buy multiples of things it adds up so, so quickly. I have three - so, 20 toys per kid becomes 60, and $100 for anything becomes $300 once all the kids get a chance to participate. (Not my real numbers, to be clear.)

I am a student and moving all the time I realised I always had too much stuff. I discovered charity shops and stopped supporting fast fashion, I hate waste and only buy the amounts I need from local fruit and veg shops. I stopped buying skin care and loved myself more and more and I must admit I like spending on my hobbies, kayaking and cycling gear. When I discovered your channel I realised there are some really good people out there like you, I stopped watching others and you have really inspired me!

Things i don't buy are mostly any more clothing/bags/shoes.. like I can't remember the last time I've bought a clothing item. Must be over 4-5 years ago. I only buy when i NEED, and one comes in another has to go. Things i splurge on are my hobbies like Travel, art things, my yearly journal and stationary (mindfully also). Any other thing i just buy food for sustenance and definitely get a good deal on it. Love from Egypt ❤️

I am really convicted about your comments on "fast fashion". I realize that where I live doesn't offer many options for clothing, and I felt that I was excluded from shopping at thrift stores because I could "afford" other stores. However, I have began to realize the negative impact that fast fashion has on so many lives. I also know the impact my local thrift store has in my community, especially in donations and other outreach programs. I am excited to step out into thrift stores and see it as a community effort for recycling clothing. Thank you so much for this video, Sarah! ❤️

As another mama commented, I also find that the more children I have, the more I'm able to clarify in my mind what we don't need, and what is WORTH spending money on. For example, kids' shoes - my five children each have two pairs of season-appropriate shoes, one for play, one for church. I've found that it simplifies our season-to-season/year-to-year wardrobe prep for me to find THE brand that makes the exact style of shoes that suits us in a quality that can be handed down from sibling to sibling, and ultimately, the more expensive shoes SAVE us money in the long run. ;)

We are very similar in a lot of ways! My rule is that if I see something I want, I have to sit on it for atleast three days. But I also full time travel in a tiny home so another rule I have is 1 thing in, 4 things out. If it doesn’t serve a purpose or many purposes, it doesn’t come into my home. Another mindset of mine is quality over quantity, my yeti water bottle for instance, it’s not like any other brand I’ve ever tried but it was expensive. I don’t own a lot of things, but all the things I have either bring us so much joy, or serve us in multiple ways

YES to rescued plants! Most of the time it is simply changing the watering! Like I have two gorgeous succulents that i bought for less than a (US) dollar and I only quit watering the one until it had dried up a little and the other looked dead, I gave it a good watering and within 48 hours it was literally three times as tall (the leaves had all curled up really tightly!) , lush, and Gorgeous leaves! The only thing I use paper towel for is cleaning up after a sick pet. For me, it's one thing to use a towel on a mess made by humans, but it's gross to do with dogs and cats. As clean as we think our fur babies are, they have different germs and bacteria that I feel gross about not just tossing if they've been sick...

This is great! I do want to make note though that fast fashion is not the only source of unethical production. Even from ethical suppliers most times there's no telling where that company sources their thread, buttons, fabric, sewing machines etc. Unfortunately there's no completely ethical consumption under consumerism BUT buying a few staples at a decent price and wearing those down before mindlessly buying more does so much better for the environment and those in those conditions. First choice would be thrift shopping but if you need a very specific item (i.e neutral colored tank tops) and do buy it at a fast fashion store, you shouldn't beat yourself up too much as long as you make the best usage out of the product.

A splurge for my husband and I: coffee and coffee supplies. Coffee is a passion hobby for my husband and he has high standards, so we have the espresso machine, the expensive grinder, we buy nice local coffee beans, syrups, etc., and when we are traveling we do buy nice lattes from local coffee shops because we enjoy it and my husband likes to learn about their techniques. However, long term it saves us money to have our own equipment and my husband is a barista and may open his own shop one day, so it’s investing in his career as well. As far as saving, I don’t buy multiples of makeup. I do like to buy from friends who sell for brands like seint or mary Kay, so sometimes I buy full price and sometimes I help them out and save by hosting a party and getting rewards to use to buy my makeup.

Try using more spice if they're not noticably changing the flavour of your dish. Most people in the west are too cautious on spice. Also do not overcook your spices, say you are using smoked paprika, cook out the rawness for 30 seconds or so in oil max.

I would only buy organic spices (and general food) because I don‘t want pesticides in my family‘s body. Also for example cinnamon; when you buy the cheap Cassia Cinnamon you get the most harmful one which shouldn‘t get consumed by children at all. The Ceylon Cinnamon is much more healthier option but a bit pricier.

Similar to your scrub pads in our house we use reusable, washable bamboo sponges. I think they come in a 4 pack on Amazon and I’ve maybe thrown out 1 due to wear and tear/grossness in 2 years!

Loved the video and I agree with shopping for food on sale! I usually buy my oat or almond milk bogo, we will occasionally splurge for some food items like an almond milk icecream. We have saved big time with many coffee items being gifted to us and also thrifting some Pyrex bowls for to go lunches

Even though I generally agree on the store memberships part, there is one exception that I have and that is with pet food. I have two dogs and a bunny so I buy pet food and other pet products on monthly basis. Where I live, I can sure go to the pet store and buy one bag of dog food for more than 50 dollars (not counting the money I spend on gas) and I also have to carry the 20 lbs of dog food through the parking lot to my car .. when I can have it shipped from an online site straight to my house for like 45 dollars total. And this site also provides a membership account (that you pay around 10 dollars per year for) and it gives you 5 - 10% off every order. So for the past year not only has it paid for itself in the discounts but ordering the products there also saved me allmost 200 dollars. That"s like 4 extra bags of kibble. Not too shabby if you ask me. So in cases like this, make the exception, just do the math first!

Thank you for sharing the minimalism message and for your inspiration! I would however add one point, a lot of lower quality spices can be contaminated with heavy metals. I'm not sure what the deal is in the U.S. but here in NZ and Australia we have had problems with turmeric imported from India having high levels of lead and babies and young children ending up with lead poisoning. I agree with everything else you said though!

I think that you would be awesome at writing a bible study on becoming more of a Biblical wife. Also sprinkling in your story of how you have gotten to where you are now. I love how you care for your kids, husband and household. I could be a digital download too. I would buy that if you ever did that. Or a short blog series if you're into that instead. I believe that you are still going to be doing that after you're off KZbin. Thank you so much for all you have given us and how you have challenged us here on KZbin!

I know you already planned videos but would you be able to do a video on plant care? I've been struggling trying to bring plants back to life and would love to know what you do!

Oh thank you so much! You just made my life so much easier! I used these dishcloths my whole life and couldn't find them in the US. My mom always had to send them to me from Germany what is super expensive and not the way I wanted to go forever! I had no idea that they are here called "Swedish" dishcloths. To me they were just regular flat kitchen sponges... 😅🤣🥰

Well, I am super sad because I just found you... on your last video. But, I will totally be watching all the old ones! I am also a homeschool mom (older, though... my baby is in 9th grade) AND a fellow plant rescuer!! Woo hoo! I love my plant babies!

Great advice overall! Car seat, though - unless it is brand new, you'll never know whether it is fully functional.

I don’t buy paper towels anymore (I buy the pack of 2 for pet messes only, but we use unpaper towels for everything else) I honestly try not to splurge too much on anything, but I do splurge on things that will give me a return over time (ie. unpaper towels, espresso machine and things to make nice coffee at home, nice quality cookware, jackets/outdoor equipment, furniture items unless we find something second hand for cheaper).

I agree with most of these except the app one. Paying for some apps actually helps declutter my mind. Apps that don't need advertisement to keep up the quality are amazing. For example I pay for Flo, and I love it :)

I just saw a story on tv about spices and how some of them have arsenic and other unnecessary additives. That’s pretty scary 😟
