Children innocently ask if the missing limb will grow back, non-amputees want to 'try on' the prosthetic, and someone is almost always going to be disappointed if there isn’t a dramatic backstory behind the amputation. Here eight people with amputations share their experiences, from being labelled ‘inspirational’, to finding themselves the object of strange fetishes.

ok this is sort of unrelated to the amputees, but when i was 16 i dyed my hair green, and a kid on the school bus (like, 1st grade, maybe) asked me what happened to it and i said "i ate too many vegetables" and depending on whether or not that kid thought the green hair was cool, I think that mightve been the wrong thing to say...

My mom was a substitute teacher for a long time. She was subbing in a particular class for the first time. This classroom had an old school crank pencil sharpener. One of the students raised his hand and asked if he could sharpen his pencil, my mom said yes, and that student and the boy next to him both stood up. My mom raised her eyebrow and said "I'm sorry, is this a two person activity?" The original boy raised his other arm, which was amputated just below the elbow, and said "Actually, ma'am. It kind of is." My mom just sort of froze for a second and then laughed and said "Alright, well. Quietly, then." Told me it was all she could do not to bust out laughing.

3-D printing is changing the costs of the more simple prosthetics, so hopefully the costs will go down. They need to do the same for wheelchairs, as an ultralight manual chair can cost $1500.00 to $10,000.00 and many insurances won’t pay the bulk of the charge.

I know the comment was made 8 months ago when you said you're a new amputee, but I know that eight months still isn't that long of being an amputee. I have been a below-the-knee amputee on my right side for just over a decade. And became a double-amputee just a few weeks ago on May 31st when I had my left leg amputated below the knee as well. I almost forgot what Phantom pains were like because the longer and longer you're an amputee (so ive observed from different amputees and articles on the subject ive read- but every amputee is different) the more and more of those Phantom pains dissipate. I get them in my right leg sporadically and have Neurontin to take if they get severe. Well when I have my leg amputated last month I literally thought I was dying because of the pains that were shooting through my stump. Nothing I would do or take would help. Heavy heavy narcotics, Neurontin which is a nerve medicine, muscle relaxers, they even gave me benzodiazepines just to try to calm me down from screaming in my hospital room. thankfully it only lasted the day and the day after surgery, Because by the third day I was able to at least set up in my bed and stop crying. They had me on a cocktail of meds so I I slightly remember it but was told all of these details later by my fiance. Are yours still intense or are you able to manage them.. also, if you don't mind me asking, Do you have different kinds of phantom pains like I do? most of them on my right side are merely feelings of my foot actually being there like wiggling my toes or a ditch on the bottom of my foot ET cie but then I get the shooting nerve stabbing type pains that could stabbing type pains that could bring the strongest person to tears in a quick second those are the ones that even with medication sometimes I'm unable to manage and want to know if you have the same issues?

My father lost his leg in a motorcycle crash, and walks with a prothesis. One day when his car got repared, he took the bus and got seated in the middle area- Which where I come from is reserved for special needs people, prams/buggys and collators. An old Lady without any walking sticks/chair etc walked up to him and literally barked at him, how he dares to sit there and doesen't he know this area is not to sit around for normal people? So he lifted the prothetic leg and flipped it up in the air, turned it around 180 degrees so the foot could rest on his shoulder and told her, aye he knows so. He said her face after this was priceless.

I say: "Shark attack" that always gets me a scared look. "I fell into a wood chipper" gets a horrified look. But my favorite one is "I contracted a Flesh Eating Bacteria" I'll get a "Wow" for that one. Then I say: "The good news is that the doctor said that in an other month, I won't be contagious anymore!" We got on so well because when I met her she offered me her stump to shake and I bumped her elbow with mine instead without even thinking. Apparently I was the first person to "get it right" as she put it. Really I'm just that guy who hates when people call people with disabilities "special" or "special needs". Nah dude they have different or additional needs but they are just people at the end of the day. Classifying people like that just labels them "different" enough in someones mind to be uncomfortable or scary for people who don't understand their differences.

Sometimes it can be a tad patronising though, like when you get news stories because a kid with disabilities got a date to prom, it a) suggests that people are saints and making a sacrifice by choosing to go to prom with someone who's disabled, and b) suggests that people who are disabled can't usually manage these things on their own, and need some able-bodied saviour to take pity on them, then we should all rally around and cry happy inspiration tears because it's such a rare and special event that someone with a disabilities can feel loved, nerver mind be loved, that's asking way too much

Amputees need more representation in the media. And I’m not talking characters like pirates whose sole purpose is to have a missing hand for comic relief reasons, I’m talking actual characters whose missing lim isn’t their purpose in the show, and characters who learn to deal with the loss. That’s part of the reason why Hiccup from the How To Train Your Dragon series is one of my favourite cartoon characters.

About ten years back, I had a bad car crash and my knee, who wasn't really that good to start with, got fucked. It took me about 4 years to be able to walk without any support. Once I was going down my street and I was still using a cane and limping heavily and someone came and asked me: "Oh, did you lost your leg? Oh poor thing." and I said, "No it's just my knee who's badly damaged". That person answer was: "Oh, that's a shame!" and for many years I wandered what she meant. Was it a shame the my knee was completely kaput or that I wasn't an amputee. I still walk with a bit of a limp and people keep asking me if I am an amputee and afterwords are quite disappointed that I'm not. What kind of fucked up person would be glad if I was an amputee???

My uncle has an amputated leg and he does that too. Like he'd say that he's gonna dress as a pirate for Halloween and make his prosthetic look like a peg leg. He's in Paris representing Malta (our county) for the qualifications for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.

Amputees have the best humor sometimes When I was in ROTC in High School, the CO over the whole orginization had a prosthetic from the knee down, but everyone kept it a huge secret One day at roll call, he looks at me and says "Cadet, what's it mean to pull someone's leg?" I stand up and say "It means to joke with someone, Colonel!" He slaps his leg on his desk and says "Come pull my leg" I muttered out a "yes sir" very uncomfortably and pulled his leg He says "Harder cadet!" I pull, and he slaps his knee and his fuckin' leg came off Scared me so hard, I just about slapped him with it lmao.

My aunt Toni had her right arm cut off by a machine when she worked in a factory and it was so quick that she didn’t feel anything but she doesn’t have a prosthetic for it but the way she manages everything is impressive
