Whether it's questions about your non-existent sex life or assumptions about how you came to be bringing up a child on your own in the first place, these are just some of the things that single parents are very tired of hearing.

I love how most people out there just assume that all single parents had their partner leave them. My best friend was a single parent. She never had sex until after marriage. Her and her husband were happy. They had two kids. But he died of lung cancer when their kids were just 5 and 1. So now she's a single mom. Don't assume.

+Emily Roberts Oh common. Statistically the chances of a parent dying before a kid hits high school pales. On one hand it isn't socially acceptable to assume based on what is statistically probably and on the other hand a single parent becomes defensive if they're asked as to not assume. It's a catch-22.
@dylanmorgan2752
@dylanmorgan2752 5 жыл бұрын
It’s far more likely the relationship failed statistically, than having a parent die. Assumption is a major part of what all humans including yourself do, to try and figure one another out. Most people will automatically assume the most likely option and cause for being a single parent and start there, rather than moving down the list of specificities such as “oh did your dad slowly drive off a cliff in a 1982 Volvo only to get struck by lightning halfway down and have his ashes eaten by sharks??” “No- my parents just split up”.

you don't understand averages. two parent households are way better, on average. there are of course instances where single parents are good and two parents are bad, but overwhelmingly it's not the other way around in terms of outcomes.

It would have done me a WORLD of good if my parents HADN'T stayed together 'for the kid' in their broken marriage. They resented eachother deeply, and they're only human, so of course that resentment fell onto me-- the person 'forcing' them to stay together-- as well, and now I'm an incredibly anxious and depressed adult who struggles to believe a person can actually love me. :|

I had an single parent, who took out all of her frustrations on me verbally and also through buying more things than she needed. She also has hoarding issues, as there was no other authority figure to help or stop her. I got told if I had a problem with it, I could leave, having no where to go. She has helped me out alot, but also emotionaly blackmailed me and given me HUGE selfesteem and trust issues. I am sad to say I live with her still as an adult because I can't seem to get a decent paying job, I don't do well with conflict and have become too much of a people pleaser. Turns out I have really bad anxiety and depression from years of trauma and stress, to the point where I now have panic attacks. I don't know how I would need to figure out how move out on my own.

My parents divorced when I was eighteen months old. And I'm so glad they did. I never felt the tension of them fighting, I never felt like it was my fault. I never missed them being together because this was all I knew. Staying together for the kids is stupid and only hurts the children, because they pick up on it. The earlier you do it, the better, because then they have more time to adjust.

+The Angel. Your individual story if true, may be a very nice and heart warming tale of overcoming the odds, but sadly doesn’t necessarily speak for the rest of society at large. I wish there were more cases like yours, but most boys raised by single mothers statistically have a higher chance of getting stabbed to death in the prison showers than making it to University. In the US, a very high percentage of male and female prisoners were raised by single parents.

My mom is and was a single parent, even when we lived with my dad (when we were little) my mom still felt like a single mother. She payed for everything, she worked, she bought all the groceries so when we left my dad it wasnt a change. I never felt sad, I actually felt happy because I didnt hear them scream and my mom wasn't as stressed anymore! My dad was always away either at work or out with friends/family so I never felt like I miss him, I still call him and he comes down and see's us. My mom stayed in that relationship because of us, but once she saw how unhappy we were she left, shes amazing and even tho we bump heads a bit I love her for everything

Honestly I clicked on this video because I’m the child of a single mother and I’ve heard her complain about some of these things! Nobody has said anything about her being a laugh but with the two parent thing and the thing about the sex life. And, knowing her, she’s still an amazing mother! I love her with all of my heart because she is what’s keeping me alive and she tries to put a smile on my face every day even when I’m not feeling down. Just to all the single parents out there, you have my full respect for all the work you do. Don’t listen to the people that say these things!

Yh because the name of the parent is really the major issue here. It’s outside the norm, at least until modern life completely screws up the majority of family dynamics, so therefore it should be labelled as such. Also most people who have single parents don’t refer to their parents and say “oh that’s my single mum” or “meet my single mum”. They’re statistically more likely to be in a jail cell before they reach adulthood, but we can see where your priorities lie.

I’m 19, single mom of 2. Their dad is working his way slowly back into a relationship with me and my sons. However until he is a POSITIVE thing for my kids he won’t be around other than for visitation. He was the one who left and it opened me up to everything that was going on that I didn’t see when we were together. If he succeeds at mending everything and we can move on and be a positive thing for our kids and eachother I will forget about the break up entirely. But to me this made me a better parent, mad me mature in the way my kids need me to, made me learn other things entirely on my own and I really have come to realize yes two parents are idea, when one or both are toxic then that toxic person needs to either change or be removed. It will bring the child down. My mom raised me as a single mother for years, yes I have thought about who my dad was, but at the end of the day when I needed someone or something I went to mom not went asking can my dad who I don’t know help me instead. I never really needed him other than a few rough spots in my life. I’m glad my mom was brave and left someone who I heard to be abusive to protect me and herself. I’m proud of her. I know how easy it is and tempting it is to say nope can’t do this alone and fall right back into that toxic environment. No I don’t want to repeat the cycle of single parent, no I don’t want to be mom and dad every day. But until it’s healthy and safe for their dad to be more involved for all 3 of us, I will continue being a single mother for as long as they need me to be!

I'm a single parent and my ex was an alcoholic who was a part time father to my kids only when hes sober. I fell into depression when he left me but I still tried to make sure he was a good father to my kids since I was shit scared of being a single parent. I fell into depression because of that. My best friend whose father passed away too knew the struggle I was going through and another best friend who is childless kept telling me to get over the fact my children's father is gone cos she thought after 4 years, she didnt understand why I was so hung up on him. My best friend who's lost her father told her that it's not about me wanting to get back together with him, it's about the fact he's gonna lose his kids to alcohol and that I'm going to be a single parent that's what's hurting me the most. She told her that if she didnt know what I was going through that means she doesnt know the massive impact a child can have on losing a parent. When he died, she didnt know why I was grieving because I broke up with him before he died. I was grieving because my kids lost their father and I have to deal with the fact that he won't see his kids grow up, wedding, graduation, first child etc. Not because I want him back. A part of me will always love him since he was my first love.

They used Barack Obama, Jay Z and Halle Berry as examples. They have turned out to have great lives and great ambitions despite having single parents, but they are the EXCEPTION, not the norm. They are all great hard working and sometimes just lucky human beings anyway, not because they have single parents. Notice they don’t talk about the fact that growing up with one parent detriments the kids and that not every child is lucky enough to have the work ethic to become Obama etc. Also notice how they didn’t use any examples such as the statistics from prisons being that most criminals come from single parent/ single mother backgrounds. I’m not going to slate them because you can’t even tell who’s fault the split was mostly or if it’s for other reasons, but for the most part I would tell people not to be reckless and to treat the home environment as they would their own romantic social circles etc. And only have kids if you’re 100% certain of raising them right.

For me personally, I wouldn’t date someone who’s already with a child. If I’m in a serious relationship with someone & we wanted to settle down, I’d want to have that first experience with them, e.g first marriage to each other, first house together, first child together. You have that special connection. If I went out with someone who had a kid & decided to have another kid with them, it wouldn’t feel as special bc they’ve already shared that precious moment with someone else. This is how I just feel though, so it may be different for others.

I was raised by a single mom and even if our life was and is still tough I am going well and I can't imagine how my life would have been with a father at home. I read books and asked different people around me about the link between having been raised by a single parent and their behavior in society... I found out that if I'm having troubles making a basic choice or live in a relationship with someone, it's maybe because I've been raised by a single overprotective mom. For example, I found out that I will seek in my boyfriends a paternal figure AND a lover. Not everyone will agree to have these roles in a relationship and I understand. I also remember that I had for the past few years a "fear" of elder man. When I was at my friend's place I had no trouble to speak to their mother or sister, whereas with a dad or brother I was petrified of the unknown. I moved from country to country, I build my own representation of parenthood and now it's too late anyway. When I was unbearable my mom used to say: "if only your father was there, you would be calm etc", this sentence hurt me the most because she did her best and yeah my dad doesn't give a shit about us anywayyyy. Mom, I know you're exhausted, therefore you're the only one I have in this world... I love you :) SOrry if it's too long.
