This makes me feel so thankful I have such a supportive family. I recently just got married and yes I do have colored hair, multiple piercings, and tattoos. As well as my husband has many more tattoos than me, yet they are more hidden. I didn’t do the whole traditional white dress thing. Everyone, including myself, all wore black for our wedding and it was absolutely beautiful. It's interesting how people with body modifications are questioned about their decisions over their bodies but somehow when parents choose to modificate their baby's bodies no one bats an eye. Like earrings and circumcision, those are body modifications too you know

I don't think you should or can, compare the two. Circumcision and getting an infants ears pierced are POPULAR choices that are perceived as "normal." These people in the video have made unpopular decisions ( for the western culture, of course different cultures will have different perspectives) and are usually rare to find on people. People make a big fuss on what's different, it has always been that way.

dirty water I don't see why not, all are body modifications choose to be done by an adult person, in their case they choose to do them on their own bodies, in the other "more common" cases the adult parents choose to do it on their children bodies. So, considering both are the same thing, they are comparable by all means, and I find really ironic that people are more shock by what these persons choose to do to their own bodies than by the choices other people make over babies and children's bodies that are in no way able to understand or consent. The fact that it is "POPULAR" or common or cultural doesn't make it more acceptable, if it wasn't any of those things it would be highly criticized (just imagine news about parents doing bellybutton piercings or tattoos on their babies....) After all, it is modifying another person body's without their consent, so is really hipocritical to be "ok" with that and critical about this

I mean, chopping off a finger is extreme, but she made an informed choice to do so, uninfluenced, by herself. Piercing & circumcising babies is done without the recipient's consent (as it is impossible to gain informed consent for anything from a baby) and, as you say, they are popular modifications and widespread meaning that the decision to make such modifications to a baby is less likely to be informed and independent, as hers was, and much more likely to be done blindly or as a result of social pressures

I have a question: where do we draw the line between body modification and body mutilitaion/harm? Because even within themselves they don't seem to agree. To the question 'Isn't it extreme', the guy at 3:41 said, "It's not like the people who have elf ears or split tongues." Yvonne Wabai piercings, tattoos, modifications are all forms of self harm. And as someone who has severly cut myself and who does have several larger tattoos and piercings I can tell you that there's a difference. The extremity of your modifications is a personal choice. I self harmed because i wanted to feel better. I get tattoos and piercings because I lile how they look. That is the difference. People don't self harm for aesthetic reasons.

When I got body mods my dad asked me if it was a form of self harm as I was suffering bad depression so I told him it wasn't because it was something that I wanted even before I was ill. Body modification isn't just piercings and tattoos and at the end of the day I think it's up to the person to why they are having it done.

Pig Destroyer actually, it does quite a bit. My dad broke his hand six times and so his pinky is pretty much unusable, he can't even straighten it. The problem is that it contributes to a huge amount of your gripping strength, so when he was climbing, he couldn't use his ring or pinky finger and fell fifteen feet.
